We'll show you how to spot it and keep yourself safe.

Text message scams seem to be becoming more and more common and sophisticated. As soon as you’ve learned how to spot a USPS text scam, there’s a new scam with a different ploy circulating. One of the more recent ones is a toll fees text scam. If you live somewhere where tolls are few and far between, these are easy to ignore. But if you drive in areas with tolls frequently, this scam aimed at phishing for your personal information might grab your attention.

How To Determine If a Toll Fees Text Is a Scam

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division (MassDOT), these toll text scams, or smishing messages, are targeted toward EZDriveMA customers. The message generally indicates that the recipient has failed to pay a toll and directs them to a URL where they can pay the fees.

A popular example of the scam’s text reads, “Pay your FastTrak Lane toll before January 8, 2025. To avoid fines and retain your driver’s license, you can click on the link to make payment,” followed by a bit.ly link that the user can’t identify the destination of from within the text.

MassDOT has emphasized that “EZDriveMA will never request payment by text” and “all links associated with EZDriveMA will include www.EZDriveMA.com.” So, if you receive a text message indicating that you owe money for tolls with an unidentifiable link, you can safely assume it is a scam.

What To Do If You Receive a Toll Text Scam

MassDOT confirms that the FBI is aware of the toll text scams andstresses the importance of reporting these messages to theIC3. Make sure that your complaint lists the number that sent you the phony text and the website it directed you to.

Once you’ve submitted the complaint, the FBI suggests that you log into your EZDriveMA account through the real website to check your account. You can also call the customer service line with questions at (877) 627-7745. Finally, once you’ve reported the scam and checked your account, you should delete the phony message from your device.

What To Do If You Engage With a Toll Fees Text Scam

Sometimes, a scam text seems legit until you click on it. If you do follow the link in one of these smishing texts or share any of your personal information, MassDOT and the FBI recommend that you “take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts,” as well as “dispute any unfamiliar charges.”

Keep yourself safe by checking your bank and credit card statements, changing your passwords for everything related to your EZDriveMA account, and considering utilizing a free credit monitoring service.

If you’ve lived in one place for ages, it can be mind-bending how much your local strip mall has changed over the years. I can’t drive by my local Stop & Shop without commenting that it used to be a Borders way back when mega bookstores other than Barnes & Noble were a thing. That nostalgia is tenfold when you drive by your childhood home and notice that the new owners have put up a fence or cut down that tree you and your siblings used to play under. Well, did you know you can recreate these journeys through the past digitally on Google Maps?

It might come as news to many that Google Maps keeps all the past photos of locations through the Street View feature, and users can look through them. For some locations (the ones that haven’t been blurred out), you can find photos going all the way back to 2007! Ahead, learn how to look at the historical photos of your childhood home, local strip mall, and more!

Airbnb Red Flags: How To Avoid Getting Scammed https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-spot-airbnb-scams/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 22:10:17 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=655743 From fake listings to phishing scams, learn to spot common Airbnb traps and protect yourself before booking your next getaway.

When it first arrived on the scene, Airbnb seemed like nothing but a gift to travelers, promising inexpensive alternatives to people looking for places to stay. But as time has passed, it’s become more apparent that renting out someone’s home instead of a hotel room comes with unique challenges. Airbnb scams have become quite common, making it tricky to know if you’re looking at a good deal for lodging or if someone is trying to take you for a ride.

But what are the most common Airbnb scams, and how can you avoid them? Here, we’ll take a look at some of the ways shady Airbnb hosts might be looking to take advantage of travelers and how you can spot their tricks.

Fake Listings

One of the more common Airbnb scams involves scammers setting up fake listings to trick people into paying for a rental property that doesn’t actually exist. Often, they steal images and addresses from legitimate properties to make their fake listing seem as authentic as possible.

The best way to avoid renting out a fake listing is to do your due diligence. Read through multiple reviews and make sure they seem to match up with the property you’re looking at. If, at any point, the listing directs you to contact the host outside of the Airbnb infrastructure, someone is likely trying to scam you.

Theft and Damage Scams

Sometimes, the scam doesn’t start until after your stay. In some cases, Airbnb hosts have been known to report false claims for theft and damages, claiming their guests left the property in a state of disrepair and disarray. The best way to combat this scam is to take pictures of everything when you arrive and leave your rental property, so you have evidence against any false claims.

Phishing

Renting an Airbnb requires a lot of personal and financial information, making these transactionsideal for anyone looking to pull off anold-fashioned phishing scam. Phishing, aka the practice of posing as a trusted source to get people to send you their personal information willingly, has been a problem since the invention of the internet. By pretending to be affiliated with Airbnb, scammers can send out emails and messages containing links to fake websites that will record and steal any info you enter.

Standard internet safety best practices will help keep you safe from phishing. Ensure your email is set up to filter out spam, keep an eye out for messages from senders you don’t recognize and never click on links that look suspicious or come from an untrustworthy source.

False Advertising

Airbnb is a crowded marketplace; some hosts will do whatever it takes to stand out. Some will post fake reviews on their own listing to drum up interest or use doctored photos to make their property look more appealing.

The good news is you’ll be able to tell if an Airbnb host has been around for a while and people have found them trustworthy in the past by looking at their profile. But if a host’s profile is new and doesn’t offer much information, you may need to do some extra digging on your own before signing up to rent their space.

Baseboards are easy to overlook when you’re vacuuming. In fact, most of us don’t really notice just how dirty they are until you start moving the furniture around and see the dust and drity that’s built up over time. To avoid the mess, I recommend folding them into your regular cleaning routine to keep them from getting really grimy and making them harder to clean.

Fortunately, cleaning baseboards is relatively easy, if you stay on top of it. Below, I’ll show you how to clean baseboards quickly and efficiently.

How Often Should You Clean Baseboards?

I would do it every two weeks or at least once a month. That will prevent dust from building up. If you have pets, you should probably clean them more regularly. At a minimum, you can vacuum them when you’re vacuuming the floor and break out the soap and water for a more thorough cleaning every month.

Prep the area

  • To begin, move all furniture away from the walls to give you easy access. This will make the baseboard cleaning process go much quicker.

Plan Your Route

Before you lift anything, plan your route, advises Nick Valentino of Bellhop, a company that operates in 27 states. “Especially when moving large furniture items, it’s essential to figure out the route from its starting point before you start,” Valentino sats. “This will give you the chance to clear any obstacles, measure any tight doorways or corners, and get people out of the way.”

Your measurements may reveal that it’s easier to go through a back door or even a window than it is to try to muscle a large, heavy item through an undersized front door, especially one that opens onto a stairway. Thinking out of the box can save your back for another day.

Prevention

Avoiding tire problems starts with you, the vehicle driver. The problems listed ahead have unique reasons that cause them. However, each of them can be lessened by performing these basic maintenance steps:

  • Visually inspect tires once a week.
  • Check tire pressure every month.
  • Rotate and balance tires and wheels every 5,000 to 8,000 miles.
  • “Getting a wheel (suspension) alignment once a year,” recommends Jim DeLeo, Hunter Engineering Company Northeast Division Manager.

PRO TIP: Driving with under inflated tires is dangerous. Under inflated tires can quickly overheat which can lead to a devastating blowout.

How Often Do You Really Need To Wash Your Towels? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/when-to-wash-your-towels/ Tue, 07 Jan 2025 21:12:29 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=655139 Towels may dry you off once you're clean, but that doesn't mean they don't get dirty. How often should you wash your towels?

The post How Often Do You Really Need To Wash Your Towels? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
There’s nothing like a fresh towel waiting for you after a refreshing shower. A well-stocked linen cupboard or towel rack certainly feels like a necessity. But the key to having a good rotation of nice towels is learning how to keep them fresh and clean. So, how often do you need to wash a towel to keep your home sanitary?

How Often Should You Wash Your Towels?

If your towels smell, you’ve definitely waited too long. Your weekly reset list might include washing your towels, which is good! A week is the maximum amount of time you should go between washings. However, according to the American Cleaning Institute, you should wash them after 3-5 uses.

Should I wash towels in cold or hot water?

Defer to the fabric care tag on your towels to decide what temperature water to use to wash them. The symbols there will tell you the water temperature and dryer temperature to dry them at so that you can clean them while also prolonging their lives. Often, if you’re washing with bleach, you should use a hotter water temperature.

Should I wash towels with vinegar?

Vinegar is a great cleaning agent, but it’s not the same as bleach. Towels come into contact with your bare skin, so it’s a good idea to clean them with a strong disinfectant, especially if you’re sick or are currently reckoning with a fungal infection.

Can you wash towels with clothes?

It depends. Ideally, you want to wash your clothes with a gentle detergent, while you should opt for something focused on disinfection for your towels. If you’re in a pinch, you can wash them together. But to get all of your items as clean as possible while still following the care instructions on their tags, you should separate out your towels.

Can I wash towels with sheets?

Just like with clothes, it depends. Your sheets may be labeled with different care instructions than your towels. If you’re able, it’s best to keep them separate so that you can focus on extending the life of all your items. Plus, depending on how big your laundry machines are, you may be unable to fit all your bedding and towels in the same load.

How Often Should You Replace Towels?

While it may be tempting to get colorful towels for each season or an assortment of neutral ones to match your bathroom decor every time you redo it, that’s actually not necessary. If your towels show major signs of wear or don’t seem to dry you off thoroughly, it’s time to replace them. Otherwise, as long as you’re cleaning them properly, they’re still good to remain in rotation.

If You See a Screw Like This, Here’s What It Means https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/tamper-proof-screws-one-way/ Tue, 07 Jan 2025 21:00:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=655453 Ever struggled with a screw you just can't unscrew? Here’s what tamper-proof screws are, where they’re used, and how to get them out when you need to!

The post If You See a Screw Like This, Here’s What It Means appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
We’ve all been there youre trying to unscrew something, but the screw just wont budge. Its not your average screw, though. This one might be a tamper-proof or one-way screw, designed specifically to be tricky to remove. These specialized screws serve a security purpose, making it harder for people to tamper with or steal things. You’re in the right place if youve ever encountered one and wondered how to deal with it.

What Are Tamper-Proof/One-Way Screws?

Tamper-proof screws, or one-way screws, are designed to go in easily but resist being unscrewed without the right tools. The idea is simple: if someone tries to take it out without the proper equipment, they cant. These screws often have unique head shapes, such as a round hole or more complex designs, like a star or a pin in the middle. You won’t be able to unscrew them without the right driver since regular screwdrivers or tools won’t do the job. So while these screws can still be installed (no problem), removing them is a whole other story.

Where Are Tamper-Proof Screws Useful?

Tamper-proof screws are used in places where its important to prevent tampering, theft or damage. For example, youll often find them on public infrastructure like streetlights, bus stops and public restrooms, where they help ensure that critical components arent easily disassembled or vandalized. Theyre also common in electronics and appliances.

In automotive and industrial equipment, tamper-proof screws are used to secure critical parts that shouldnt be messed with by just anyone. This is especially true in machinery, where tampering could lead to accidents or expensive repairs. Also, safety and security devices like fire extinguishers, smoke detectorsand even ATM machines use these screws to prevent tampering that could cause a malfunction or lead to theft.

How Do You Remove Tamper-Proof Screws?

Removing a tamper-proof screw can be a challenge, but its not impossible. Here are some methods you can try:

  • Specialized Drivers: The best way to deal with a tamper-proof screw is to use the right driver. These tools are specifically designed for the unique shape of these screws and can be found online or at specialty tool stores. With the correct tool, youll be able to remove the screw with ease.
  • Alternative Tools: If you dont have the proper driver on hand, you might try using a flathead screwdriver or pliers. However, this can be tricky. You could damage the screw or the surrounding material, making it even harder to remove later, so use caution with this approach.
  • Drilling It Out: If all else fails, you could resort to drilling out the screw. This method involves using a high-speed drill bit to drill into the center of the screw. Its not a quick fix and requires patience, but it can be effective. Just be careful not to damage the surrounding area, and know that this method may permanently ruin the screw.
  • Screw Extractors: For a more professional solution, you can use a screw extractor. This tool is designed to remove stubborn or tamper-proof screws by gripping onto the screw and allowing you to unscrew it. Screw extractors are a great choice if you need to remove the screw cleanly without causing any damage to the surface.

Do These 10 Things to Get Your Car Ready for Winter https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/winterize-car/ Tue, 07 Jan 2025 16:32:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=650513 Safeguard your vehicle against harsh winter conditions with our 10-point checklist on how to winterize a car.

The post Do These 10 Things to Get Your Car Ready for Winter appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

As the colder months approach, it can be easy to forget that our cars need some extra attention before the temperature starts dropping and snow falls. Winter weather can be very tough on our vehicles, and the last thing you want is to get stuck on the side of the road during a snowstorm because you forgot to check your tire pressure. If you live in a climate where temperatures drop below freezing, it’s time to make sure your car is ready for the snowy and icy roads.

I consulted Family Handyman’s automotive expert, Bob Lacivita, for the most important things to do to winterize your car. He mentioned that Your vehicle is usually your second biggest investment, and if you plan to keep it more than five years, maintaining your car or truck is critical, especially if you live in climates where temperatures can remain below freezing or in the 90s for days. But the ice, snow and fridge temperatures of winter are particularly hard on our vehicles, and the reason prepping for winter is essential.

You don’t need a professional mechanic to inspect everything on your vehicle, but it can be challenging to properly inspect certain components like belts, hoses, and brakes. If you’re unsure, it’s best to take your vehicle to a professional mechanic to ensure there are no serious issues.

Test car battery

In cold temperatures, the battery’s chemical reaction slows down, making it harder to stay fully charged and deliver enough power to start the engine. It’s important to test the battery’s voltage to see if it needs to be replaced. To test your car battery, set your multimeter to read volts. When the engine is off, touch the red lead of the multimeter to the positive battery terminal and touch the black lead to the negative terminal post.

Your reading should be between 11.9 volts to 12.8 volts. If you run the same test with the engine running (the alternator is then charging the battery), your reading should be in the range of 14.1 to 14.6 volts. A car battery typically lasts around 50,000-60,000 miles. In colder climates, it may need to be replaced before 50,000 miles.

Tip: Keeping the battery terminals clean and secure is essential for getting the most out of your car battery.

How Often Should You Reboot Your Router? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-often-should-you-reboot-your-router/ Tue, 07 Jan 2025 16:29:52 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=655127 Periodically restarting your router keeps your internet connection strong and deters hackers.

The post How Often Should You Reboot Your Router? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Routers usually just whir along in the background without being noticed. But, like most parts of our house, they can benefit from a bit of attention and maintenance from time to time. In this case, that means rebooting your router.

“While many people are happy running their router until they encounter a problem, restarting your router once a month or so is a good idea,” says Seth Geftic, vice president of product marketing at Huntress. “It can depend on the quality of your router and its software, but memory leaks and stalled processes alongside various bugs can slow things down.

Here’s what to know about your router, and why it’s a good idea to schedule a regular restart.

Benefits of Regularly Restarting Your Router

Rebooting your router on a regular basis can bring a lot of advantages, says Jacob Kalvo, co-founder and CEO at Live Proxies. Here are the major ones.

It Updates Software and Security

Rebooting your router ensures it receives periodic software and firmware updates and patches from the manufacturer, which are important to keep the device functioning smoothly and secure it from potential hackers.

“It’s really important to keep an eye on your device’s security patches and make sure it’s up to date,” says Marcello Barros, global director at Hacker Rangers. “If a hacker gets into your network device, they could intercept your data or keep track of what you’re doing online.”

It Can Fix Connection Problems

A router reboot can also help with problems like slow speeds and lost connections. “It’s simply a means of rebooting the entire network to get rid of those minor glitches that might build up in it over time,” says Kalvo.

It Cleans the Cache

Rebooting your router will clean the cache, a collection of temporary files in the router’s memory. This will generally help enhance your internet connection’s performance and seed.

Dangers of Not Restarting Your Router

Slow Internet Connection

Over time, a router’s memory cache becomes cluttered with temporary data, which can cause an unstable internet connection. “That degraded performance could cause frustration due to slower internet speeds and poor connectivity,” says Geftic.

Compromised Security

Some older routers don’t automatically update firmware without a reboot, which leaves you vulnerable to hackers.

Shorter Device Lifespan

Periodic reboots can also help prolong the life of your router. “Minor issues with your router, such as overheating or congestion, may result in more significant connectivity failures or hardware wear over time if the router is not restarted,” says Kalvo.

How Often Should You Reboot Your Router?

You should reboot your router every month or so to maintain performance and security or when you notice a speed drop or have other connectivity issues.

“However, the frequency can depend on your usage habits and the reliability of your router,” says Kalvo. “For businesses or users with high internet demands, more frequent reboots may help maintain a consistently smooth network experience.”

How to Reboot Your Router

  • Unplug the power cable from the router, or turn off the power button if your router has one;
  • Wait 30 seconds to a minute;
  • Plug it back in. “This brief pause will completely clear the memory of the router,” says Kalvo.
  • Wait for the router to fully restart, which may take a few minutes.

Some routers have a reset button, which you can press to reboot them. However, says Kalvo, avoid confusing this with the factory reset option, which erases all of your settings.

Some routers also have apps where you can navigate through the settings to reset them, says Geftic. “This is helpful if your router’s power source is inconvenient to reach,” he says.

Should I Change My Router Password?

Probably. Routers usually come with a default password that’s well-known and easy to find online. “That’s why it’s super important to change it to something stronger and harder to guess,” says Barros.

Even if your internet provider sets up a strong default password, it’s still a good idea to change it, he says. It’s also a good idea to change your router setting from WPS to WPA.

“WPS makes it easier for devices to connect to the network without needing a security password, but that makes it less secure and more prone to attacks, so a lot of experts recommend turning off WPS,” he says. “WPA, on the other hand, is a security protocol that keeps your Wi-Fi safe, only letting authorized devices connect, so it’s a much safer option.”

If you do set your router to WPA, Barros recommends using the third version (WPA3), which has the fewest security issues.

If you’re a John Deere lawn mower owner, a recent recall impacting certain ZTrak Zero Turn Mower models will be of great concern to you, as it concerns potential safety risks. The issue involves the Kawasaki motors within the mowers, which have a defect that could pose a fire hazard during use or even when the mower is stored.

While no injuries have been reported, some worrying incidents linked to this defect have occurred, making it essential to act if your mower is affected. Read on to find out which models are included in the recall and how to handle the situation if you’re impacted.

What John Deere Mowers Are Being Recalled?

John Deere is recalling about 39,000 of its ZTrak Zero Turn Mowers with model numbers Z720E, Z730M, Z740R and Z760R. John Deere will contact all known purchasers of the impacted mowers directly.

The serial numbers for the impacted models, which will be located on the right side of the machine near the rear tire, are listed below:

  • Model Z720E
    • Start Serial Number: 1TC720E****010001
    • End Serial Number: 1TC720E****080657

    • Start Serial Number: 1TC760R****080001
    • End Serial Number: 1TC760R****080339

Why Are These Mowers Being Recalled?

These mowers are being recalled because the Kawasaki engines within them are defective. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall brief dated Jan. 2, “The voltage regulator in the mower’s engine can fail during use or while the product is being stored, causing the engine to overheat, posing fire and burn hazards.”

Kawasaki Motors reports five fires and 26 instances of melting and/or smoking connected to this issue, but no injuries have been reported.

What To Do If Your Mower Is Recalled

If your mower is affected by this recall, you should contact an authorized John Deere dealer immediately to set up a free repair appointment. You can contact Deere & Company for more information through their customer service line (800-537-8233).

The post This Is How Often You Should Restart Your Phone appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
You use your phone all hours of the day, but when was the last time you restarted it? According to the National Security Agency (NSA), it’s something you should do once a week (not only when your phone is acting up). The agency shared this advice in its Mobile Device Best Practices guide as a prudent security practice.

Restarting your phone can help disrupt malware attacks, but beyond better security, there are some other perks to rebooting regularly. Ahead, we share expert advice on how often to restart your phone and the benefits of doing so.

Benefits of Regularly Restarting Your Phone

It boosts security

For many of us, our phones are a treasure trove of personal information. Restarting your phone is a practice that can help keep all that information protected. According to the NSA, a restart can thwart spear phishing and zero-click exploits. They recommend restarting your phone once a week. Considering it only takes a couple of minutes, it’s a very small task for improved security.

Just remember that this is not a magic bullet against security threatsyou’ll still want to take other measures like setting strong passwords and updating your phone. The latter is an important one, as Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor for ESET explains, “If people are regularly updating their devices when fresh operating system versions are released, devices will remain healthy and protected. Zero-click malware is a recurring issue for both Apple and Android operating systems, but it is generally identified and addressed quickly.”

So while restarting your phone can help, don’t let it lull you into a false sense of security. Make sure you keep your phone updated, too.

It improves performance

Security is important, but Moore explains another reason to regularly restart your phone is it will improve your day-to-day experience. “Rebooting phones and tablets can improve performance, connectivity problems and other glitches that may occur,” says Moore. There’s a reason why we turn devices off and on again when there’s an issue. A system restart can really help.

When we use our phones, a lot goes on in the background. Even if you close apps, they can still be running processes or leaving information fragments behind, taking up precious memory space. Restarting your phone shuts things down completely, which can help improve memory and speed.

It improves battery life

The more programs and apps a device runs, the more it will drain the battery. Shut it all off by restarting your phone. This process completely closes out apps, so you don’t have as much stuff running in the background, which can mean a slightly longer battery life.

Issues That Not Restarting Your Phone Can Create

Sluggish performance

Whether it’s due to apps running behind-the-scenes or temporary memory hogging your phone space, sluggish performance can be one consequence of never restarting your phone. Turning your device off and on again provides a clean slate for your phone to run a little smoother.

Unexpected battery draining

Is your phone dying faster than usual? One of the many processes explained above could be a possible cause. Restart your phone and see if battery life improves before trying other fixes.

How Often Should You Restart Your Phone?

As recommended by the NSA, restart your week at least once a week to improve security. You can also benefit from these other performance perks. You can restart your phone more often if you’d like, but once a week is an easy schedule to commit to.

Here’s Why the Bear Mattress is the Goldilocks of Mattresses https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bear-mattress-review/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 19:57:27 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=652811 It's cooling, comfy and supportive. In our Bear mattress review, we explain why this mattress is just right for every type of sleeper.

Waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat is annoying at best, and plain old gross at worst. Fortunately, there are plenty of cooling products on the market to help hot sleepers. From cooling bed sheets and blankets to bed cooling systems, there are options when it comes to finding some relief. Another surefire way to help you stay cool at night is to invest in a good cooling mattress. We’ve tested dozens of the best mattresses and there’s one that stood out as being truly effective: the Bear Pro Hybrid mattress.

We found that the Bear mattress actually lived up to its claims of keeping you cool and supported while you sleep. So without further ado, here is our full Bear mattress review.

What is the Bear Mattress?

The Bear Pro Hybrid mattress is a cooling mattress. Its 10-inch profile is made up of four layers: a breathable quilted cover, cooling gel memory foam, Bear Dynamic foam and a six-inch base of individually encased coils. The combination of foam and coils is what makes it a true hybrid mattress.

The Bear mattress comes in seven sizes and you have the option to upgrade to a comfy, temperature-regulating pillow-top cover. This mattress is designed to be placed on any flat surface including the Bear foundation, adjustable base or platform bed. It can even be placed on the floor. However, the brand does not recommend placing this mattress on a traditional coil box spring because it does not provide an evenly distributed surface area for foam-based mattresses.

On the website, Bear lists the firmness as medium-firm, giving it a seven out of 10 firmness rating. And while it’s not an organic mattress, the mattress itself is Greenguard Gold Certified,Certi-PUR US Certified and fiberglass-free.

We Tried It

Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress

This affordable mattress features a cooling gel layer and air-infused coils to move heat away from the body.

Bear Mattress Features

Breathable Quilted Cover

The mattress is wrapped in a soft, breathable cover. You also have the option to upgrade to a Celliant pillow top cover which helps regulate body temperature as well as enhance your overall wellness.

Cooling Gel Memory Foam

The cooling gel layer is directly under the quilted cover and draws heat away from your body. It also helps keep your spine properly aligned, reducing your chances of waking up with aches and pains.

Bear Dynamic Foam

This foam allows the mattress to contour to your body’s shape while keeping pressure off of your back, hips and shoulders.

Individually Encased Coils

The 6-inch layer of encased coils also helps keep you cool at night. That’s because it allows for more airflow than solid memory foam mattresses.

Non-Toxic

The Bear mattress is not organic, but it is non-toxic. As mentioned above, it is Greenguard Gold Certified,Certi-PUR US Certified and fiberglass-free. This means it’s made without harmful chemicals including formaldehyde, ozone depleters, phthalates, mercury, lead and other heavy metals.

How We Tested It

Fhma24 Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress

We sent this mattress to our tester Emily Way, a stomach and side sleeper who describes herself as a living furnace. “I sweat through my pajamas. I sweat through my sheets. My body pumps out so much heat during my REM cycle that Im sure everyone within a three-mile radius can feel it,” she writes in her Bear mattress review. Since she runs so hot, she was skeptical of this mattress’s ability to really keep her from sweating through her linens. But after 30 nights, she was shocked to discover that she never once woke up drenched in sweat.

The mattress arrived on Way’s doorstep shrink-wrapped and packed in a surprisingly compact box. The box was too heavy for her to lift on her own, so she and her husband carried it up to the bedroom together. Once they got it upstairs, they opened it up and watched as it inflated. Way points out that while you can sleep on it immediately, Bear recommends waiting 24 to 48 hours for it to fully inflate. She and her husband slept on it after about 24 hours since it seemed mostly expanded by then.

“Initially, I was a little surprised by the feel of this mattress. While it touts itself as ‘medium-firm, Id say its much closer to the ‘firm’ side of thingssomething I wasnt thrilled with at first,” writes Way. “However, my first night on the Bear Pro hybrid mattress completely changed my tune.”

Fhma24 Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress

Prior to the Bear mattress, Way and her husband often found themselves waking up with back and hip pain. Once they began sleeping on the Bear, that pain disappeared. “Its supportive, thanks to the coils and firmness, yet also offers enough ‘give’ to cradle the body,” explains Way. “Its actually much, much more comfortable than any other ‘firm’ mattress Ive tried in the past. Now, Im a true believer in the importance of a little firmness on a mattress for side sleepers!”

But what really impressed Way was the fact that she didn’t wake up drenched in sweat. Though she opted not to upgrade to the cooling pillow top, she found that the cooling gel layer and air-infused coils did a great job of moving heat out and away from her body at night. “Even on sweltering nights, I have yet to wake up drenched in sweata big win for me, especially for abudget mattress,” she raves.

Vehicle lighting systems are crucial for safety, visibility, and legal compliance on the road. Like many auto parts, headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals are subject to wear and eventual failure. Regular inspection and timely replacement of these lights are essential to ensure you can see the road clearly and other drivers can see you, especially during challenging driving conditions.

What causes headlights to go bad?

Multiple factors contribute to automotive headlight bulb deterioration. Temperature extremeswhether scorching summer heat or freezing winter coldcan significantly accelerate bulb degradation. Even though headlight housings are designed to be sealed and protect the bulbs, damage to the housing or seal can allow moisture intrusion, leading to premature bulb failure. Additionally, normal usage, vibration from driving, and the electrical system’s constant stress gradually wear down these bulbs.

Purchasing replacement bulbs

Cars require different bulbs for the different lights around the car. You can find the specific type your car needs in the owner’s manual or online. Many auto part store websites allow you to input your vehicle’s year, make, and model to determine which bulbs are compatible with your car. Remember that with headlights, taillights or other vehicle lights that exist in pairs, it’s best to replace both simultaneously because if one goes out, the chance that the other one will probably also go out soon thereafter is high.

Replacing headlight bulbs

Locate the bulbs

Turn off the car and put on nitrile gloves before handling any working light bulbs.

In the engine bay, locate your headlight housing. Inside the housing, which may require you to unlatch or unscrew an access panel, you’ll find the headlight and front turn signal bulbs.

What It Means If A Gas Can Is Swollen or Collapsed https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/why-a-gas-can-swells-and-collapses/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 17:19:02 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=655125 A swollen or collapsed gas container gets that way because of the change in vapor pressure inside it. It looks dangerous, but it usually isn't.

The post What It Means If A Gas Can Is Swollen or Collapsed appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
A swollen or collapsed gas container can be an unsettling thing to discover in your garage, but it’s a great learning opportunity. The container changes shape because of the changing vapor pressure of gasoline, which is highly volatile and readily evaporates. Scientists have known since the 17th century that the pressure a vapor exerts on the sides of a container changes with temperature, and they formulated this insight into a mathematical relationship known as the Boyle-Mariotte Law (also known as the Ideal Gas Law). You may have heard about it in high school science classes.

According to this law, the product of pressure (P) and volume (V) of a gas is equal to the product of the amount of gas present (n), the ambient temperature (T) and a fixed number known as the universal gas constant (R). In mathematic terms, that’s written as PV=nRT. Since a gas container has a fixed volume, the equation can be rearranged to read P=kT, where k is a constant (nR/V). This tells us that when temperature goes up, vapor pressure goes up, and vice versa.

If science and math aren’t your specialty, you can take the word of HVAC pro Sergey Nikolin, who deals with vapor pressure as part of his job: “Gas cans swell and collapse due to temperature changes, as gasoline vapors expand when heated and contract when cooled.”

Unfortunately, a swollen or collapsed gas can be potentially dangerous, given the flammability of gasoline, but you can avoid accidents by using the right container and following some simple guidelines. We’ll tell you all about it.

Why Do Gas Cans Swell?

A gas container swells when the ambient temperature goes up, and if you’ve been paying attention, you already know why: It’s because the vapor pressure in the container has also increased. The pressure inside the container was the same as atmospheric pressure when you filled it and closed the cap, but when the pressure inside the container increases and exceeds atmospheric pressure, it pushes the sides out. “It’s completely normal for a sealed container, but honestly, it can be a little surprising if you’re not used to it,” says Chris Turner, a designer of luxury fire pits.

Is a swollen gas can dangerous?

It can be, warns Nikola especially if you’re using an old gas container. “Excessive swelling can weaken the can over time or even cause it to rupture if it’s old or damaged. Over time, the flexing can cause invisible micro-cracks, potentially leading to undetected vapor leaks.”

If your can conforms to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) specifications, there’s less danger of an accident than if it isn’t. That’s because OSHA-approved containers:

  • Hold a maximum of five gallons;
  • have a flame-arresting screen under the cap;
  • have a spring-closing lid and spout cover;
  • have a valve that safely relieves pressure when the container is exposed to fire.

Not all containers on the market are OSHA compliant, so if safety is a priority, choose one that bears the OSHA label.

How to open a swollen gas can

Slowly and carefully. Some of the vapor will escape, so to prevent inhaling it and/or creating a fire hazard, you should always be in a well-ventilated areapreferably outside. You should never be near an open source of heat because if the vapor ignites, it can flash back to the can and ignite the liquid gasoline. Such accidents are rare, but they do happen. NBC News reported 11 deaths and 1,200 emergency room visits between 1998 and 2013 because of this phenomenon.

On hot days, the sun can potentially provide enough heat for flashbacks, so you should always be in the shade. One more thing: Don’t open the can while it’s resting on a metal surface because metal generates static electricity that can produce sparks.

Should I use the gas in a swollen gas can?

If the container is still intact and the swelling is moderate, the gas should be safe to use. However, an old container and/or extreme swelling can cause small ruptures and possible contamination. If this occurs, it’s a good idea to discard the fuel.

Why Do Gas Cans Collapse?

When the vapor pressure in a gas container decreases due to low ambient temperatures, it can’t resist the force of atmospheric pressure pushing on the sides, and the container collapses.

Is a collapsed gas can dangerous?

A swollen or collapsed gas can is never a good thing if it is old. Old cans “don’t always handle pressure changes well,” says Turner. Cracks or leaks can develop, and that’s where the fire hazard comes in.”

If an old can collapses and ruptures, it won’t release fumes while the temperature is low and the can is collapsed, but it very well might when the temperature rises, the vapor pressure increases and the can regains its normal shape and begins to swell. That’s a time bomb you want to avoid.

How to fix a collapsed gas can

It may seem strange, but a gas can is supposed to collapse, at least as far as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is concerned. Unlike OSHA, the EPA prohibits pressure-relief vents because they allow gas fumes to escape into the atmosphere. With no way to equalize vapor pressure inside and outside of it, the container has no choice but to collapse.

Restoring an EPA-approved can without a pressure-relief vent it to its normal shape is easy. Simply remove the lid to equalize pressure, then replace the lid tightly and set the container in the sun. It should regain its normal shape in an hour or two.

How to prevent gas cans from collapsing

“Use modern gas cans with pressure-relief mechanisms and store them on raised platforms to avoid ground heat transfer,” advises Nikolin. “And periodically inspect for cracks or warping and replace every 57 years for safety.” Turner concurs and adds: “Don’t overfill them, this can make the whole situation worse. It’s one of those things that seems fine until it’s not.”

The post Here’s What Those Window Bars With a Potbelly Are Actually For appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Have you ever walked down the street and noticed quirky metal bars sticking out just below the windows? Those are window belly bars, also known as potbelly grilles. While they might look purely decorative, theyve been used for practical purposes too.

What are Window Belly Bars

Theyre a unique architectural feature, usually made of metal. They curve out from the window, creating a “potbelly” shape. Their primary purpose is extra security. Theyre often seen in older buildings with a bit of vintage charm, adding to the overall character of the structure.

Where Are They Most Common?

Youll typically spot window belly bars in older, historic buildings. Cities with a lot of Victorian, Georgian, or Art Deco architecturelike New York, London, or Parisare prime locations for these charming bars. They add some character to buildings, whether its an old apartment building, a townhouse, or even a commercial property.

Are They Hard to Install?

If youre considering adding window belly bars to your space, theyre not too difficult to install. Most kits come with pre-cut bars and brackets, so its mostly about measuring your windows and attaching them securely.

However, if youre dealing with an older building, hiring a professional is a good idea to ensure the bars fit correctly and dont damage the structure. Especially in historic buildings, you want to ensure the installation doesnt interfere with the overall integrity or aesthetic of the space or go against any city codes or HOA rules.

Make sure the window frame or surrounding structure can handle the weight of the bars, and youll have a fun, charming addition to your home.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),a new recall is out for Ford vehicles. Thisrecall concerns a fuel pump defect that impactsnearly 300,000 vehicles. It may feel overwhelming trying to process all of this information, but don’t worry. We’ve parsed the brief for you so that you can quickly understand the problem, which vehicles are on the list and how to fix the problem.

Why Are Ford Vehicles Being Recalled?

The NHTSA brief warns that “high-pressure Fuel pump failure can cause a loss of drive power.” The pump failure seems to be due to “biodiesel deposits” that “may form on the pump drivetrain roller components.” Unexpected loss of drive power is incredibly dangerous because it can increase the risk of a crash while driving.

Read the list of impacted vehicles very carefully to see if yours is one of the affected vehicles.

Which Ford Vehicles Have This Fuel Pump Defect?

Nearly 300,000 2020-2022 Ford vehicles have this fuel pump defect and have been impacted by this recall.

The list includes:

  • 2020 F-Super Duty F250
  • 2021 F-Super Duty F250
  • 2022 F-Super Duty F250
  • 2020 F-Super Duty F350
  • 2021 F-Super Duty F350
  • 2022 F-Super Duty F350
  • 2020 F-Super Duty F450
  • 2021 F-Super Duty F450
  • 2022 F-Super Duty F450
  • 2020 F-Super Duty F550
  • 2021 F-Super Duty F550
  • 2022 F-Super Duty F550
  • 2020 F-Super Duty F600
  • 2021 F-Super Duty F600
  • 2022 F-Super Duty F600
  • 2021 F-650
  • 2022 F-650
  • 2021 F750
  • 2022 F750

If you own any of the Ford vehicles on the list, look for the owner letters Ford will send out in mid-January, and refrain from driving your vehicle as much as possible until you’ve had it repaired.

What to Do if You Own an Impacted Vehicle

Ford “dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software, free of charge,” according to the recall brief. If your car is on the list, call your local Ford dealer as soon as possible to set up an appointment for a repair to rectify this problem. The repair is free, and the risk of crash is too high for you to safely put it on the back burner.

If you have further questions after reading your owner letter or don’t want to wait to get more information, you can contact Ford directly by calling Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Be sure to clarify that you’re asking about Ford recall number 24S78.

Snow Chain Installation: A Step-by-Step Guide https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-install-tire-chains/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 16:00:31 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=650146 Get the confidence you need to handle treacherous roads this winter by learning how to install tire chains.

The post Snow Chain Installation: A Step-by-Step Guide appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

In many areas nationwide, winter weather turns roads icy and treacherous for long stretches of the year. You can get special snow tires to help your vehicle handle better in the snow, but even those are sometimes not enough to get through the heaviest winter storms. One of the best and most proven ways to give your car more traction in the snow is by throwing snow chains on your tires. Wrapping a snow chain around a tire allows it to bite deeper into the snow and ice, preventing your wheels from spinning out as easily. Theyll make your car a bit clunkier to drive and limit your speed, but thats an easy trade-off when dealing with slick roads.

I am installing tire chains on a sedan with front-wheel drive, so I will be attaching tire chains to both of the front tires. If you have a rear-wheel drive car, you should install the chains on the rear tires. For all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles, you can install chains on all four wheels to maintain an even level of traction. Before purchasing, ensure that the chains you select are compatible with your tire size. The tire chains I purchased are self-tightening snow tire chains, which allow them to tighten automatically while driving. Note that not all tire chains have this feature, so if yours dont, you will need to use chain tensioners. I highly recommend investing in automatic self-tightening chains to avoid the hassle of manual adjustments.

Are snow tire chains legal?

Restrictions on using snow tire chains vary by state, as each state has its own regulations on public road use. For instance, in some states, it is mandatory that drivers have snow tire chains on their vehicles when signs indicate their necessity or during specific times of the year on designated roads. In other states, they are outlawed on all public roadways. Since it would take an entire article to cover each state’s snow tire chain guidelines, it’s best to do a quick Google search for your states requirements to ensure you comply with the regulations.

Layout the chains flat on the ground

Start by untangling the chains and disconnecting any cables if necessary. Make sure that the wire hooks are facing down toward the ground. The blue cable side of the snow chains should be positioned at the back, on the inside of the tire and closest to the vehicle, while the red side should be in the front, farthest from the vehicle. Note that the split in the chain indicates where the tire will rest during installation.

The post How To Upgrade Light Switch Covers appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
In the design debate between form and function, light switch covers also called “switch plates” generally fall squarely in the functional category. But they don’t have to, says Audrey Scheck, founder and principal designer of Audrey Scheck Design in Austin, Texas. In fact, upgrading switch covers is one of the easiest and most inexpensive things you can do to completely transform your living spaces.

“I like to think of light switch covers as the room’s jewelry, subtly acting as an elevated way to make a functional part of your home feel unique and special,” Scheck says.

Ahead, Scheck explains how something as simple as upgrading switch covers can make a big impact. Then, I’ll walk you through swapping them out it’s easy! I’m an electrician, but you don’t need any fancy tools or knowledge. You do need to be safe, though, so get ready to turn off that circuit breaker.

Why You Should Change Your Switch Covers

A better question is: Why not? Upgrading switch covers is a great way to express your style, making the space feel truly reflective of your home’s character, Scheck says. “I love seeing how surprised clients are when they see the finish and appreciate what a difference a light switch upgrade makes.”

It’s also important to swap out switch covers if yours are broken. When I bought my house a few years ago, a couple of the switch plates were cracked and barely hanging on by the screws. Even if a cracked plate seems minor, it’s an electrical hazard. If the plate falls off, the electrical connections within the switch box will be exposed.

Switch Cover Decor Options

A trip to your closest home improvement center might make you think your options are limited. It’s time to rethink that. “We’ve come a long way from traditional plastic light switch covers,” Scheck says. “There are now a plethora of manufacturers creating beautiful switch plate options that can fit nearly any design aesthetic.” So think outside the big-box store and search online for new colors and styles.

“When it comes to aesthetics, the color of your walls along with the overall design plan will give you a pretty good idea of the elements you want to complement,” Scheck says. “There’s so much variety out there; just make sure the cover feels like a charming addition rather than a distraction.

“Most of the rooms in my home have decorative light switch covers in either brass or matte black finishes, which have been such a fun and simple way to personalize spaces,” Scheck says. “There are plenty of custom options available with a variety of unique functions like dimmers, toggles, and various controls.”

How To Swap Out A Light Cover

Ready to do this? Upgrading switch covers takes just a few minutes. But “[f]irst and foremost, think about the practicality of the switch to ensure that the function is suitable to the room’s needs,” Scheck says. Fiddling with designer knobs in a laundry room? No thanks.

Once you have the right covers for the right rooms, here’s what to do:

  1. Read the instructions. I’m a big proponent of reading the paperwork, even when you’re doing something simple like upgrading switch covers. I know electricians who don’t, and it’s not a good habit to get into.
  2. Turn off the power. Find the circuit breaker that controls the light switch and shut it off. (Just turning off the light won’t do itthe power coming into the switch is always on, even when the switch is off.)
  3. Remove the switch plate. Use a small, flat screwdriver to carefully unscrew the plate. Be ready to catch the tiny screw(s) in your hand. If you have a screwless-style face, pop off the external plate by the edges, then unscrew the base plate.
  4. Verify the power is off. Use a non-contact voltage tester to test the circuit attached to the screws on the switch. Unless you’re replacing the switch itself, you won’t need to touch the circuit at all, but it’s still important that it’s off in case your screwdriver slips.
  5. Align cover plate. Hold the switch plate up to the switch and align the screw hole(s) to the holes in the switch. Insert the provided screws (be careful, they are tiny!).
  6. Level as you tighten screws. Hold a torpedo level along the side of the plate, or just eyeball the placement, and tighten the screws (don’t overtighten, or the plate could crack). Metal levels will leave a mark on painted walls, so wrap with electrical tape if that’s a concern.
  7. Attach finish plate. If you have a snap-on cover plate, attach it over the base plate and you’re done.
  8. Finish screws neatly. Align any visible screw slots vertically or horizontally (I always go vertically) for a neat appearance.

The Real Reason Aluminum Foil Has a Shiny Side and a Dull Side https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/aluminum-foil-shiny-dull-side/ Wed, 01 Jan 2025 17:00:44 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=654339 Discover the surprising reason behind aluminum foil's two-sided finish, whether it impacts cooking or food safety, and the one instance where the side actually matters.

The post The Real Reason Aluminum Foil Has a Shiny Side and a Dull Side appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If youve ever used aluminum foil, you might have noticed something curious: one side is shiny, while the other is dull. For a long time, this difference has sparked debates in kitchens everywhere. Is one side better for cooking? Does it matter which side faces up or down? The truth might surprise you.

Lets examine why aluminum foil has this dual-sided finish and whether it affects how you use it.

How Is Aluminum Foil Made?

To understand the shiny-versus-dull mystery, it helps to know how aluminum foil is made. Foil starts as a massive slab of aluminum, which gets rolled into thinner and thinner sheets. By the end of the process, the aluminum is so thin that it becomes fragile. To prevent tearing, manufacturers roll two sheets together at the final stage.

Heres the twist: the side that touches the rollers comes out shiny, while the side sandwiched between the two sheets turns dull. Thats itits a purely mechanical result of the manufacturing process. No special coatings, no secret treatments, just physics.

Does the Shiny Side Cook Better?

One of the most common myths about aluminum foil is that the shiny side reflects heat better, so you should face it toward your food. While that might sound logical, its not actually true. The difference in reflectivity between the shiny and dull sides is so minor that it has no noticeable impact on cooking.

Whether youre wrapping a potato to bake or covering a dish for the oven, you can use either side of the foil without affecting the outcome. The shiny-versus-dull debate is more about aesthetics than performance.

What About Food Safety?

Another question people often ask is whether one side of the foil is safer for food contact. The good news is that both sides of aluminum foil are food-safe. Theres no chemical difference between the shiny and dull sides. So, whether youre grilling veggies or freezing leftovers, you dont need to worry about which side touches your food.

However, its worth noting that foil shouldnt come into contact with highly acidic foods, like tomato sauce or citrus, for extended periods. Acid can cause the aluminum to break down slightly, leaving behind a metallic tasteor even tiny amounts of aluminum in your food.

When Does the Side of Foil Actually Matter?

Theres only one situation where the shiny-versus-dull sides of foil make a difference: non-stick foil. This specialized type of foil has a coating on one side, and the dull side is usually marked as non-stick. In this case, youll want to follow the packaging instructions to ensure youre using it correctly.

Why You Need to Keep the Cap on When Recycling Plastic Bottles https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/keep-cap-on-recycling-plastic-bottles/ Wed, 01 Jan 2025 15:00:50 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=654351 In order to recycle right, you have to keep track of the rules. For example, what do you do with the caps when recycling plastic bottles?

The post Why You Need to Keep the Cap on When Recycling Plastic Bottles appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
We’ve all heard that recycling is important and that we need to do our part to take care of the planet. And while this is true, recycling is not quite as straightforward as it sounds. Take plastics, for example. There are many different kinds of plastics that need to be recycled in different ways. Plastic bottles are often made up of at least two kinds! Whether you collect your bottles to take to a center or just toss them into the blue bin, you need to know the correct process for recycling plastic bottles.

How Are Recycling Materials Sorted?

According to the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), sorting recycling materials is a multi-step process. Once items are picked up from their bins and delivered to Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), there’s a pre-sort process to remove any non-recyclables mixed in. Then, the items get sorted by type.

The APR explains that plastics are “sorted into types using optical sorters.” They clarify that employees still check to prevent machine error. The different types of plastic are then gathered together into bales and sold to recycling facilities. Once at a recycling facility, the APR continues, the plastics are ground down and then sorted again.

Why Does It Matter If The Cap Is On?

The APR explains that different plastics have different densities. During the sorting process at the recycling facility, separating things out in a tank of water allows dense plastics to separate from the ones that float. Once ground up and dropped into the tanks, caps “often made of HDPE plastic, float to the top of the float-sink tank.” Bottles, on the other hand, are often “made of PET, [and] sink to the bottom of the tank.”

Generally, the recycling center will utilize both types of plastic. So, keeping the caps on the bottles when you toss them into the bin allows them to travel safely together until it’s the appropriate time to separate them.

Is This Always True When Recycling Plastic Bottles?

As with most things in life, the answer is “sometimes.” If you take your bottles to a recycling center, you can ask the staff there what the best practice is. This way, you can save them time and ensure that your items are recycled as efficiently as possible. If, however, you toss things in the recycling bin and let the trash trucks handle it, you should assume that keeping the caps on when recycling plastic bottles is best.

What Does the VSC Dashboard Symbol Mean In a Car? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/vsc-dashboard-symbol/ Fri, 27 Dec 2024 16:03:54 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=654144 Confused what those three little letters on your dashboard mean? Here's a look at VSC and how it helps keep you safe.

The post What Does the VSC Dashboard Symbol Mean In a Car? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
When an unfamiliar symbol springs up on your car’s dashboard, it can bring feelings of confusion and worry unless you know what the symbol is trying to tell you. So if you see a little light with the letters “VSC” flash on your dash, don’t panic. Most likely, the car is just letting you know that it has engaged a safety system designed to help keep you on the road. Here’s what you need to know about your VSC system and how it impacts your car’s performance.

What Is A VSC System?

The Vehicle Stability Control system is a relatively new technology currently found in select Lexus and Toyota vehicles. Stability control technology has been required by law in the United States in all cars manufactured after 2012, but VSC specifically is only found in select models.

The goal of a VSC system is to prevent skidding or loss of control in certain scenarios. When working properly, a VSC system will detect if your vehicle is slipping or losing traction and kick in to help you regain control.

How a VSC System Works

Typically, a car with VSC has sensors on all four of its wheels. Those sensors communicate directly with a module that sends signals to both your car’s engine and transmission. The engine and transmission then adjust based on those signals, optimizing performance based on the specific road conditions.

Why Is My VSC Light On?

Most of the time, the VSC light will flash on whenever the stability control system kicks in. This is an indicator that everything is working properly. But if your VSC light comes on and stays on, it’s likely indicating a larger problem. Typically, if something is wrong, the VSC light will turn on along with another warning light, like a Check Engine indicator. If this happens, you can use a diagnostic tool to read the fault code stored in your vehicle’s engine control module.

A Used Dryer Sheet Can Make Cleaning Your Toilet So Much Easier https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/clean-toilet-with-dryer-sheet/ Thu, 26 Dec 2024 13:09:06 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=654771 A simple dryer sheet is going to totally revolutionize the way you clean your toilets. Here's how to dust your toilet with a dryer sheet.

The post A Used Dryer Sheet Can Make Cleaning Your Toilet So Much Easier appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
One of the peskiest parts of cleaning a toilet is removing all the dust, lint, and hair accumulated on its surface. While your first instinct is to wet a sponge or rag with water and soap to wipe down the surface, if anything, that only adheres all that dry stuff to the seat even more firmly, making the process of cleaning it longer and more tedious than it was to begin with.

But what if I told you a simple product most people have lying around the house could simplify this whole process? If you have dryer sheets in your laundry room, they’re about to change how you clean your toilet forever.

How To Use Dryer Sheets To Clean a Toilet

Dryer sheets are made of polyester or other cellulose fibers, which happen to pick up hair and dust on the surface of a toilet than a wet sponge. Instead of going right in with something wet, put on a pair of gloves and run a dryer sheet over all the toilet surfaces. It will act like a lint roller, picking up all the dry muck on your seat and leaving it prepped for you to go in with your wet cleaning products for a perfect clean.

Check out TikTok user @The MatureCleaner using the method:

@theamateurcleaner Makes it easy to clean#cleantok #fyp #cleaninghacks #viral #housekeeper #houskeeepingtip #hack #home #trending midnight rain x daylight – kait .

If you’re concerned about wasting precious dryer sheets using this method, know you needn’t use a brand-new sheet to take advantage of it. The sheet’s fabric picks up the dust, not the softeners and fragrances it’s coated with.

Save your dryer sheets after drying your clothes. You can then use them again while cleaning your bathroom.

Alternatives To Dryer Sheets

As an alternative to using dryer sheets to dust your toilet, you can use dry pads for dry mops, like the Swiffer Sweeper, to achieve the same effect. However, this method eliminates the benefit of reusing the pads like you can with a dryer sheet (you wouldn’t want to clean your toilet with a dry pad you just used on your dirty floors).

What Is the Little Slot Next to the Gear Shift In My Car? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/shift-lock-release-button/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 12:07:04 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=654695 No, that little slot next to your gear shift is not a mini SD card slot. Here, learn all about the lifesaving shift lock release.

The post What Is the Little Slot Next to the Gear Shift In My Car? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Over the years, car innovations have transformed how we drive, making even basic models smarter and packed with features. From infotainment systems to customizable climate settings, every inch of modern cars is designed to impress. But with all this progress comes one little problem: dashboards and gear shifts are now cluttered with so many buttons, knobs, and mystery features, it’s easy to overlook some of their most useful details.

Take the tiny, unassuming slot on your gear shift, for instance. Tucked away in most cars, it’s so discreet that many drivers go years without noticing it. And even if you do spot it, chances are you’ll shrug and move onuntil you really need it.

Ahead, we’ll uncover the purpose of that oft-overlooked slot and explain why it’s a lifesaver hiding in plain sight.

What Is the Little Slot On My Gear Shift?

That little box resembling a tiny SD slot either to the left or right side of your gear shift is actually a compartment that houses the shift lock release button. In some cars, the button is not hidden in a compartment.

What Does the Shift Lock Release Button Do?

Cars with automatic transmissions come with shift lock, a safety feature that prevents drivers from shifting into a different gear unless the car is on and your foot is on the brake. While this feature is necessary to avoid unnecessary accidents, there’s a slight chance that it could also prevent someone from moving their car when it brakes down.

For example, if your car’s battery dies and you need to move it to be serviced, you wouldn’t be able to shift it into neutral and push the car without stepping on the brake. The shift lock release button solves this issue, as it allows you to override the shift lock feature to shift your vehicle into the desired gear.

How To Use the Shift Lock Release Button

Depending on your vehicle, the shift lock release may be activated with varying levels of ease.

If your shift lock release button isn’t hidden behind a compartment, you can simply press and hold the button down to activate it and shift your car into neutral. Once you’ve moved the car to the desired location, remember to shift it back into park using the same method.

However, if your shift lock release is hidden behind a compartment with a slot, the process is slightly more complicated:

  • First, you’ll need a flat tool (like a key or a screwdriver) to remove the compartment’s lid, exposing the button. Simply press your tool into the slot and leverage it to lift the lid off the compartment.
  • Once the compartment is removed, the shift release button will most likely be recessed inside the compartment. Use the same tool you used to remove the lid to compress and hold down the button.
  • Once the vehicle is moved, use the same tool to compress the shift lock release and shift the car back into park before replacing the lid on the button’s compartment.

Fortunately, there's an easy way to prevent it with a tube sock and kitty litter.

The post Here’s an Easy Hack To Prevent Your Windshield From Fogging Up appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
When you’re in a rush to get around in the morning, the last thing you want to deal with it a foggy car window. Sure, maybe you have a remote starter that you can fire up to warm up the car before you head out the door, but that’s not too common for those of us with older cars. Besides, it’s quite possible you forget to start it up because of the usual hectic morning routine.

Fortunately, there’s an easy hack that will prevent your windows from fogging up, and hey, we could all use one less thing to worry about in the mornings.

Dangers of a Foggy Window

A condensation-caked windshield can be dangerous. You should never try to drive with a foggy windshield since it impairs your vision. Your car’s defrost setting will take care of the issue, but if you’re running late, you do not want to have to deal with those extra minutes of waiting. For this hack to prevent your windshield from fogging up in the first place, you only need three things: a tube sock, some kitty litter and something to help you pour the litter into the sock.

“The idea is that the litter, designed to absorb cat urine, will absorb the moisture in your car that causes glass to fog up,” explains Roslyn McKenna, car insurance publisher for Finder. McKenna and her team tested out the trick, and found that it does indeed work. “During our test, the car windshield and windows didnt fog up at all,” she said.

Some types of kitty litter will work better than others. Look for non-clumping or crystal litters. They work better than traditional clumping clay or pellet litter, according to Mckenna’s testing. As for the socks, choose something with material that’s as high-wicking as possible. You can use a roll of tape, an empty paper towel roll, etc. to help put the litter into the sock.

How To Prevent Car Windows From Fogging

First, take your kitty litter and fill the sock up to about where your ankle would begin. Use the tape roll or empty paper towel tube stuffed into the sock to help pour in the litter without making a mess. Finally, tie if off at the top of the sock.If you prefer, you can stuff the whole thing into a second sock for extra strength.

Now that you have your sock stuffed with litter and tied off, place it on your car’s dashboard every time you park and leave your car. Your fog problems will be a thing of the past.

If you forget to put the sock in the window when you park and the window fogs up, try running the litter-filled sock along the windshield to get better results than your hand or a hand towel. Keep it in the car so that you remember to use it.

How To Get Rid of Weeds in Pine Trees Without Killing Them https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-kill-weeds-in-pine-trees-without-killing-them/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 16:28:50 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=654376 Tips for killing weeds around pine trees without damaging their roots or health—easy solutions for homeowners.

The post How To Get Rid of Weeds in Pine Trees Without Killing Them appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Pine trees can serve a variety of purposes in a home landscape, from acting as windbreaks to providing visual interest with their evergreen foliage. Though generally low-maintenance, pine trees can develop weeds beneath their canopy that need to be managed. Whether you’re dealing with invasive grasses, broadleaf weeds or climbing vines, effective weed control is necessary for the health of your pine tree. But it’s important to approach weed management with care, as herbicides can harm or kill pine trees.

Below, three tree experts Brady Self from Mississippi State University Extension Service, Jaret Rushing and Jacob Hackman from the University of Arkansas Systems Division of Agriculture and Jacob Hackman from the University of Arkansas Systems Division of Agriculture share their top tips for killing weeds in pine trees.

Can Weeds Growing on a Pine Tree Hurt the Tree?

In certain cases, weeds growing on a pine tree can hurt it. But this will depend on the type of weeds and the age and health of the pine tree.

Young pine trees are vulnerable to low-growing weeds like invasive grasses and broadleaf weeds that compete for sunlight, water and nutrients. But this risk passes once saplings grow tall enough. “As the tree gets older and establishes itself above competing vegetation, the impact of those weeds goes down exponentially to a point where there is very little impact on the growth or survival of the tree,” Self says.

But, older, more established pine trees can still be impacted by weeds. Unwanted trees, technically weeds, compete with pine trees and suppress their growth. “Any plant can be considered a weed if it’s growing in an area that it shouldn’t be,” Hackman says. “Although it sounds strange to think of trees as weeds, some species are invasive or can have devastating effects on overall forest health and should be removed or managed to maintain a healthy pine tree or forest.” Hardwood trees and pine tree saplings sprouting too close to established trees are common types of weed trees that grow under pines.

Climbing weeds are also a concern with older pine trees. Weeds like English Ivy, Virginia Creeper, Oriental Bittersweet and Kudzu can smother trees with their vines and leaves while blocking out sunlight. In extreme cases, the weight of the vines can cause tree limbs to break under their weight. “Vine control is important because climbing vines can choke out pine trees,” Rushing says, “and vines that have reached the canopy compete for resources with the tree.”

Can Weed Killer Kill Pine Trees?

Yes, weed killers can absolutely harm or kill pine trees, so they must be used carefully. “The wrong chemical applied in the wrong way can have devastating effects on a forest ecosystem and should be treated with the utmost respect and caution,” Hackman says.

“Always read the product label and “ask someone in the know if you are unsure of potential damage to pines,” Self says.

How to Kill Weeds in Pine Trees Without Killing the Pine Tree

To kill low-growing weeds in pine trees, like invasive grasses or broadleaf weeds, use a foliate-activated weed killer like glyphosate, the active ingredient in Round-Up. This type of herbicide only works when applied to living foliage, so it poses a low risk to pine trees. To avoid harming the tree, “apply it underneath tree foliage, and take care not to get it on the needles,” Rushing says.

There are other safe, natural weed killers available if you’re uncomfortable with glyphosate.

For larger weeds, like invasive trees, use a chainsaw or hand saw to cut them down. Wear protective gear and follow all safety protocols. Even when cut down, weed trees can return, requiring further action. “Many species of trees can resprout from the root system that remains underground,” Hackman says. He suggests trying a method called “hack and squirt,” where you create a wound in a tree trunk with a chainsaw or axe and then quickly spray herbicide into the wound. “[This] can be effective in completely killing the weed tree, but the time of year for this type of treatment can change its efficacy,” he says.

To remove invasive Norway Maple tree saplings from my yard, I use a reciprocating saw with a pruning blade. After cutting the sapling down, I dig away the soil from the roots and cut the roots with the saw as well. This is effective at preventing regrowth at the stump, which this tree species will often do.

Preventing climbing vines from getting established requires vigilance as they grow quickly. When young, pull them up by the root to remove them. To kill established climbing weeds, cut them down with loppers, remove as much of the root as possible and apply glyphosate to any remaining foliage or growth.

When Should I Call a Pro?

While killing weeds in pine trees is typically a manageable task for homeowners, there are some scenarios where you should call a pro.

If you have allergies to the weeds you’re trying to control, call a pro to avoid exposure. Also, if weed trees are taller than 10 to 15 feet tall, it may be best to hire a professional to safely fell them for you.

Still unsure you can tackle this on your own? Hackman recommends reaching out to local consultants. “Almost all 50 states have local county agriculture or forestry agents that can come perform a site visit to help or point you in the right direction free of charge. Most states will also have local Consulting Foresters and Arborists who are trained in herbicide applications and can perform the application for a fee,” he says.

6 Reasons Why Your Car Only Starts On the Second Try https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/car-starting-second-time/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 15:53:11 +0000 It's scary when your car doesn't immediately start on the first try, but don't get complacent when it does start on the second try.

The post 6 Reasons Why Your Car Only Starts On the Second Try appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
It’s worrisome if your car doesn’t immediately start, especially if you’re in a hurry to get somewhere. The last thing you want is to be stranded because your vehicle won’t start, because sooner or later, whatever is causing it not to start on the first try will cause it not to start on the second, third or how many times you try.

With over 50 years in the auto repair industry, the complaint I have heard thousands of times was, my car doesn’t start, but then I turn the key off, and then it starts right up on the second try. There are numerous reasons why this can happen. My first question would be, does the engine crank over like it’s trying to start, or does it seem as if the battery is dead, where the engine just clicks or makes no sound at all?

With help from a General Motors master technician and my years of firsthand experience, we’ll share the most probable reasons why your car starts (hopefully) on the second try.

Is a Car Starting on the Second Try Bad?

Yes, a car not starting on the first try, but the second, is bad. Ever since the introduction of computer-controlled fuel injection and electronic ignition systems, an internal combustion engine (ICE) even in the coldest weather should start within two or three seconds. In fact, vehicles with auto start-stop technology are designed to restart in less than a half-second. Depending on the reason (mechanical malfunction, fuel system, ignition system, or electrical system), even if the engine does quickly start on the second try, it means something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

Additionally, cranking an engine for long periods of time weakens the battery, causes premature wear to the starter motor, and can stress other systems, including increased wear on engine components.

Reasons a Car May Start on the Second Try

There are several causes why a car may start on the second try rather than the first. To diagnose, there are a whole series of questions that need to be answered to help narrow down the problem and determine the appropriate repair, including, but not limited to:

Sometimes, there are DIY fixes to this problem, but here is info you can discuss with your mechanic if you need to visit the pros.

Fuel system

According to General Motors master technician Dave Zemaitaitis, the most likely cause of a car starting on the second try could be issues with the fuel system, like “a weak fuel pump, a leaking fuel line pressure regulator valve or a fuel pump check valve will not hold pressure,” which “allows fuel to drain back into the [fuel] tank.”

Zemaitaitis suggests drivers “turn the key to the run position and listen if you can hear the fuel pump running.” This is referred to as the “two-second prime.” If you hear the pump running and your car starts on the second try, the fuel system is the most likely culprit. If your car has a pushbutton starter instead of a key, without your foot on the brake pedal, pushing the start/stop button will place your car into the “run” position.

Other fuel-related causes include a clogged or dirty fuel filter or excess carbon in the intake valves. Try replacing the fuel filter and decarbonizing the engine yourself. Soft carbon on the valves can absorb fuel, particularly in colder weather, decreasing its ability to ignite. The same can happen if you use low-quality, contaminated or high-octane fuel in an ICE car calling for 87 octane. Add a decarbonizing cleaner to the fuel tank and clean other components of the fuel/air intake system before taking your car in for service.

Battery

A failing battery, a battery with loose or corroded battery terminals, or low voltage can cause your engine to not crank over on the first attempt but start on the second try. Clean the battery terminals, and check the battery and charging system for proper voltage.

Ignition system

Weak ignition coils, worn or dirty spark plugs, or degraded spark plug wires can all prevent your engine from starting on the first try. Replacing spark plugs and spark plug wires are all DIY tasks. However, diagnosing and repairing coil-over plug ignition systems (they have no spark plug wires) is best left to your mechanic.

Starter motor

If your engine clicks on the first try and then starts on the second try, the started motor or solenoid may be bad. Try cleaning the ground cable that attaches from the negative (-) battery terminal to the engine block. Unless you are comfortable working under your car, leave starter repairs to your mechanic.

Dirty or malfunctioning computer sensors

Any number of sensors that send information to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) can cause all kinds of starting issues. For example, a failed coolant temperature sensor (CTS) can either flood an engine with too much fuel or starve the engine of fuel. Out of calibration, failing or dirty mass air flow (MAF) sensor, oxygen (O2) sensors, crankshaft or camshaft position sensors can keep an engine from firing up on the first attempt, while allowing it on the second try.

Check for trouble codes if you have a diagnostic code reader. Cleaning the MAF or replacing O2 sensors are DIY fixes. Leave crankshaft or camshaft position sensors to the pros.

Lack of maintenance

Sometimes, a dirty air filter can cause the engine to run with too much fuel, thick oil can keep an ICE from spinning fast enough to start, bad coolant can damage the CTS, or a dirty throttler body or idle air control (IAC) valve can affect the air-fuel mixture and hinder your car from staring on the first try. These are all basic DIY maintenance items to keep up with and ensure your car starts on the first try.

What’s The Hack to Get Stains Out of Tupperware?

Generally when my Tupperware gets stained, I soak it in a hot water and dish soap mixture to coax the stains off of the plastic. But FacesbyAdi’s hack claims to be faster. To get stains out of Tupperware, the TikToker recommends putting water, soap, and a paper towel in the stained dish. Then, put the lid on and shake it vigorously for 40-60 seconds. When FacesbyAdi takes off the lid and pours out the soapy mixture, the Tupperware container looks as good as new. The stains have vanished entirely.

Why Does This Hack Matter?

Plastic Tupperware stains quite easily, and these stains are a pain. They’re not technically a safety issue but stained dishes do look a little unsightly. Plus, leftover stains can make the dishes feel as though they aren’t clean enough. Is that reddish color harmless or is it a bit of oil that will go rancid? Getting the stains all the way out gives you some peace of mind, plus it will make your kitchen look a little more put together when you’re packing up leftovers for your guests to take home.

What Makes This Hack Work in Theory?

Heat helps to loosen up stains, and soap is lipid based. That means that it is drawn to other lipids, like the oil in the sauce stain on your containers. The agitation from the shaking builds up soap bubbles quickly and ensures that the mixture hits every square inch of the stained container. So in theory, these pieces combining together should pull stains off easily.

Does This Hack Actually Get Stains Off Tupperware?

The jury is out on whether or not this hack works. There’s also debate over whether it works better than simply soaking your Tupperware containers or leaving them in the sun to bleach. The video never explains why the paper towel is included. Some commenters guess that it’s there to absorb the grease, but that’s never confirmed. And several commenters seem to be convinced that the stained container is sneakily swapped out for a clean one at the end of the video.

What You Need To Know About the New Seat Belt Warning Rules https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/seat-belt-warnings/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 20:20:58 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=654547 New rules from the Federal Government will require audio and visual warnings for every seat in cars and trucks starting in 2027.

U.S. Department of Transportations National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized a rule this month requiring all new cars to sound a warning if passengers in the backseats are not wearing their seat belts. The agency also announced a rule requiring enhanced warnings for the driver and passenger seats in the front of vehicles. The later rule takes effect on Sep. 1, 2026, while the new rule for backseat passengers goes into effect a year later, on Sep. 1, 2027.

Only 81.7 percent of people riding in the backseat wear their seat belts, according to a press release from the NHTSA, compared to more than 91 percent of people in the front seat. The new rules are directly aimed at reducing the number of deaths and injuries resulting from passengers not wearing seat belts. The NHTSA estimates that these rules will prevent more than 50 fatalities and 500 injuries. Each year, an estimated 822 backseat passengers lose their lives, and another 11,000 suffer injuries from not wearing safety belts.

What Kind of Seat Belt Alerts Are Required By The New Rule?

The rule requires vehicles to provide a visual alert once the ignition is on and the seat belt isn’t in use for an occupied rear seat. Once the vehicle starts moving, the rule requires an audio alert as well, so something like the beeps, buzzes or dings cars sound now when the driver isn’t wearing their seat belt. Visual warnings must last for at least 60 seconds, while audio warnings must last for at least 30 seconds.

Some form of rear seat alert is already fairly common in newer cars. The agency says that approximately 47 percent of cars made in 2022 have that feature.

For the front seats, the new rule mandates that the audio and visual warnings be extended. The rule requires the audio warning for the front seats to work in two phases. The first must last at least 30 seconds. A second phase will activate only when the vehicle speed is moving at 6.2 miles per hour or faster and the seats are occupied but the seat belt is not in use.

What Kinds of Vehicles Does the New Seat Belt Warning Rule Cover?

Almost everything sold in the United States will be covered by the new rule: cars, trucks, busses (with the exception of school busses) and multi-purpose passenger vehicles with a weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less.

When Were Seat Belts First Required In Cars?

Knowing what we know now, it’s hard to believe that there was a time when carmakers weren’t required to install seat belts in vehicles. The Federal Government made it a requirement in 1968, but it wasn’t until 1984 that states started passing mandatory seat belt laws. New York was the first state do so in that year, and by 1995, every state but New Hampshire had a similar law on the books. New Hampshire still does not require adults to wear seat belts, but the Granite State does require passengers under 18 to be properly restrained with a seat belt or a car seat for passengers under 7 years or 57 inches tall.

When Did Seat Belt Alarms Become Mandatory?

Seat belt reminders have been around for a while, and the United States made them mandatory for drivers starting in 1972.

How Many Lives Are Saved By Seat Belts?

The NHTSA estimates that 14,955 lives were saved because of seat belt use when people were involved in a crash. In 2022, the agency reports that there were 25,420 fatalities in car crashes among vehicle occupants, and about 50 percent of those people were not wearing a seat belt.

According to the agency’s data, you risk of fatal injury in a passenger car drops by 45 percent for anyone in the front seats wearing a seat belt. Risk of moderate to critical injury drops by 50 percent. In light trucks, the risk of death drops by 60 percent and moderate to critical injury by 65 percent.

In other words, buckle up and make sure anyone riding in your car has their seat belt on, too. Let this be your official warning from your friends at Family Handyman.

Improve Garden Soil

Ashes contain nutrients like potassium, magnesium and calcium that improve garden soil naturally. “I use a lot of ashes in my garden,” says Wilczek, as it can eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers. But test the soil’s pH levels before adding. “Wood ash is very alkaline with a pH level around 10 to 12 and can easily neutralize acidic soil,” Corbett says. “If added to soil with a pH level 6.5 or above, this can harm the plants.”
