There’s nothing like a fresh towel waiting for you after a refreshing shower. A well-stocked linen cupboard or towel rack certainly feels like a necessity. But the key to having a good rotation of nice towels is learning how to keep them fresh and clean. So, how often do you need to wash a towel to keep your home sanitary?

How Often Should You Wash Your Towels?

If your towels smell, you’ve definitely waited too long. Your weekly reset list might include washing your towels, which is good! A week is the maximum amount of time you should go between washings. However, according to the American Cleaning Institute, you should wash them after 3-5 uses.

Should I wash towels in cold or hot water?

Defer to the fabric care tag on your towels to decide what temperature water to use to wash them. The symbols there will tell you the water temperature and dryer temperature to dry them at so that you can clean them while also prolonging their lives. Often, if you’re washing with bleach, you should use a hotter water temperature.

Should I wash towels with vinegar?

Vinegar is a great cleaning agent, but it’s not the same as bleach. Towels come into contact with your bare skin, so it’s a good idea to clean them with a strong disinfectant, especially if you’re sick or are currently reckoning with a fungal infection.

Can you wash towels with clothes?

It depends. Ideally, you want to wash your clothes with a gentle detergent, while you should opt for something focused on disinfection for your towels. If you’re in a pinch, you can wash them together. But to get all of your items as clean as possible while still following the care instructions on their tags, you should separate out your towels.

Can I wash towels with sheets?

Just like with clothes, it depends. Your sheets may be labeled with different care instructions than your towels. If you’re able, it’s best to keep them separate so that you can focus on extending the life of all your items. Plus, depending on how big your laundry machines are, you may be unable to fit all your bedding and towels in the same load.

How Often Should You Replace Towels?

While it may be tempting to get colorful towels for each season or an assortment of neutral ones to match your bathroom decor every time you redo it, that’s actually not necessary. If your towels show major signs of wear or don’t seem to dry you off thoroughly, it’s time to replace them. Otherwise, as long as you’re cleaning them properly, they’re still good to remain in rotation.

Here’s Why the Bear Mattress is the Goldilocks of Mattresses https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bear-mattress-review/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 19:57:27 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=652811 It's cooling, comfy and supportive. In our Bear mattress review, we explain why this mattress is just right for every type of sleeper.

Waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat is annoying at best, and plain old gross at worst. Fortunately, there are plenty of cooling products on the market to help hot sleepers. From cooling bed sheets and blankets to bed cooling systems, there are options when it comes to finding some relief. Another surefire way to help you stay cool at night is to invest in a good cooling mattress. We’ve tested dozens of the best mattresses and there’s one that stood out as being truly effective: the Bear Pro Hybrid mattress.

We found that the Bear mattress actually lived up to its claims of keeping you cool and supported while you sleep. So without further ado, here is our full Bear mattress review.

What is the Bear Mattress?

The Bear Pro Hybrid mattress is a cooling mattress. Its 10-inch profile is made up of four layers: a breathable quilted cover, cooling gel memory foam, Bear Dynamic foam and a six-inch base of individually encased coils. The combination of foam and coils is what makes it a true hybrid mattress.

The Bear mattress comes in seven sizes and you have the option to upgrade to a comfy, temperature-regulating pillow-top cover. This mattress is designed to be placed on any flat surface including the Bear foundation, adjustable base or platform bed. It can even be placed on the floor. However, the brand does not recommend placing this mattress on a traditional coil box spring because it does not provide an evenly distributed surface area for foam-based mattresses.

On the website, Bear lists the firmness as medium-firm, giving it a seven out of 10 firmness rating. And while it’s not an organic mattress, the mattress itself is Greenguard Gold Certified,Certi-PUR US Certified and fiberglass-free.

We Tried It

Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress

This affordable mattress features a cooling gel layer and air-infused coils to move heat away from the body.

Bear Mattress Features

Breathable Quilted Cover

The mattress is wrapped in a soft, breathable cover. You also have the option to upgrade to a Celliant pillow top cover which helps regulate body temperature as well as enhance your overall wellness.

Cooling Gel Memory Foam

The cooling gel layer is directly under the quilted cover and draws heat away from your body. It also helps keep your spine properly aligned, reducing your chances of waking up with aches and pains.

Bear Dynamic Foam

This foam allows the mattress to contour to your body’s shape while keeping pressure off of your back, hips and shoulders.

Individually Encased Coils

The 6-inch layer of encased coils also helps keep you cool at night. That’s because it allows for more airflow than solid memory foam mattresses.

Non-Toxic

The Bear mattress is not organic, but it is non-toxic. As mentioned above, it is Greenguard Gold Certified,Certi-PUR US Certified and fiberglass-free. This means it’s made without harmful chemicals including formaldehyde, ozone depleters, phthalates, mercury, lead and other heavy metals.

How We Tested It

Fhma24 Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress

We sent this mattress to our tester Emily Way, a stomach and side sleeper who describes herself as a living furnace. “I sweat through my pajamas. I sweat through my sheets. My body pumps out so much heat during my REM cycle that Im sure everyone within a three-mile radius can feel it,” she writes in her Bear mattress review. Since she runs so hot, she was skeptical of this mattress’s ability to really keep her from sweating through her linens. But after 30 nights, she was shocked to discover that she never once woke up drenched in sweat.

The mattress arrived on Way’s doorstep shrink-wrapped and packed in a surprisingly compact box. The box was too heavy for her to lift on her own, so she and her husband carried it up to the bedroom together. Once they got it upstairs, they opened it up and watched as it inflated. Way points out that while you can sleep on it immediately, Bear recommends waiting 24 to 48 hours for it to fully inflate. She and her husband slept on it after about 24 hours since it seemed mostly expanded by then.

“Initially, I was a little surprised by the feel of this mattress. While it touts itself as ‘medium-firm, Id say its much closer to the ‘firm’ side of thingssomething I wasnt thrilled with at first,” writes Way. “However, my first night on the Bear Pro hybrid mattress completely changed my tune.”

Fhma24 Bear Pro Hybrid Mattress

Prior to the Bear mattress, Way and her husband often found themselves waking up with back and hip pain. Once they began sleeping on the Bear, that pain disappeared. “Its supportive, thanks to the coils and firmness, yet also offers enough ‘give’ to cradle the body,” explains Way. “Its actually much, much more comfortable than any other ‘firm’ mattress Ive tried in the past. Now, Im a true believer in the importance of a little firmness on a mattress for side sleepers!”

But what really impressed Way was the fact that she didn’t wake up drenched in sweat. Though she opted not to upgrade to the cooling pillow top, she found that the cooling gel layer and air-infused coils did a great job of moving heat out and away from her body at night. “Even on sweltering nights, I have yet to wake up drenched in sweata big win for me, especially for abudget mattress,” she raves.

What It Means If A Gas Can Is Swollen or Collapsed https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/why-a-gas-can-swells-and-collapses/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 17:19:02 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=655125 A swollen or collapsed gas container gets that way because of the change in vapor pressure inside it. It looks dangerous, but it usually isn't.

The post What It Means If A Gas Can Is Swollen or Collapsed appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
A swollen or collapsed gas container can be an unsettling thing to discover in your garage, but it’s a great learning opportunity. The container changes shape because of the changing vapor pressure of gasoline, which is highly volatile and readily evaporates. Scientists have known since the 17th century that the pressure a vapor exerts on the sides of a container changes with temperature, and they formulated this insight into a mathematical relationship known as the Boyle-Mariotte Law (also known as the Ideal Gas Law). You may have heard about it in high school science classes.

According to this law, the product of pressure (P) and volume (V) of a gas is equal to the product of the amount of gas present (n), the ambient temperature (T) and a fixed number known as the universal gas constant (R). In mathematic terms, that’s written as PV=nRT. Since a gas container has a fixed volume, the equation can be rearranged to read P=kT, where k is a constant (nR/V). This tells us that when temperature goes up, vapor pressure goes up, and vice versa.

If science and math aren’t your specialty, you can take the word of HVAC pro Sergey Nikolin, who deals with vapor pressure as part of his job: “Gas cans swell and collapse due to temperature changes, as gasoline vapors expand when heated and contract when cooled.”

Unfortunately, a swollen or collapsed gas can be potentially dangerous, given the flammability of gasoline, but you can avoid accidents by using the right container and following some simple guidelines. We’ll tell you all about it.

Why Do Gas Cans Swell?

A gas container swells when the ambient temperature goes up, and if you’ve been paying attention, you already know why: It’s because the vapor pressure in the container has also increased. The pressure inside the container was the same as atmospheric pressure when you filled it and closed the cap, but when the pressure inside the container increases and exceeds atmospheric pressure, it pushes the sides out. “It’s completely normal for a sealed container, but honestly, it can be a little surprising if you’re not used to it,” says Chris Turner, a designer of luxury fire pits.

Is a swollen gas can dangerous?

It can be, warns Nikola especially if you’re using an old gas container. “Excessive swelling can weaken the can over time or even cause it to rupture if it’s old or damaged. Over time, the flexing can cause invisible micro-cracks, potentially leading to undetected vapor leaks.”

If your can conforms to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) specifications, there’s less danger of an accident than if it isn’t. That’s because OSHA-approved containers:

  • Hold a maximum of five gallons;
  • have a flame-arresting screen under the cap;
  • have a spring-closing lid and spout cover;
  • have a valve that safely relieves pressure when the container is exposed to fire.

Not all containers on the market are OSHA compliant, so if safety is a priority, choose one that bears the OSHA label.

How to open a swollen gas can

Slowly and carefully. Some of the vapor will escape, so to prevent inhaling it and/or creating a fire hazard, you should always be in a well-ventilated areapreferably outside. You should never be near an open source of heat because if the vapor ignites, it can flash back to the can and ignite the liquid gasoline. Such accidents are rare, but they do happen. NBC News reported 11 deaths and 1,200 emergency room visits between 1998 and 2013 because of this phenomenon.

On hot days, the sun can potentially provide enough heat for flashbacks, so you should always be in the shade. One more thing: Don’t open the can while it’s resting on a metal surface because metal generates static electricity that can produce sparks.

Should I use the gas in a swollen gas can?

If the container is still intact and the swelling is moderate, the gas should be safe to use. However, an old container and/or extreme swelling can cause small ruptures and possible contamination. If this occurs, it’s a good idea to discard the fuel.

Why Do Gas Cans Collapse?

When the vapor pressure in a gas container decreases due to low ambient temperatures, it can’t resist the force of atmospheric pressure pushing on the sides, and the container collapses.

Is a collapsed gas can dangerous?

A swollen or collapsed gas can is never a good thing if it is old. Old cans “don’t always handle pressure changes well,” says Turner. Cracks or leaks can develop, and that’s where the fire hazard comes in.”

If an old can collapses and ruptures, it won’t release fumes while the temperature is low and the can is collapsed, but it very well might when the temperature rises, the vapor pressure increases and the can regains its normal shape and begins to swell. That’s a time bomb you want to avoid.

How to fix a collapsed gas can

It may seem strange, but a gas can is supposed to collapse, at least as far as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is concerned. Unlike OSHA, the EPA prohibits pressure-relief vents because they allow gas fumes to escape into the atmosphere. With no way to equalize vapor pressure inside and outside of it, the container has no choice but to collapse.

Restoring an EPA-approved can without a pressure-relief vent it to its normal shape is easy. Simply remove the lid to equalize pressure, then replace the lid tightly and set the container in the sun. It should regain its normal shape in an hour or two.

How to prevent gas cans from collapsing

“Use modern gas cans with pressure-relief mechanisms and store them on raised platforms to avoid ground heat transfer,” advises Nikolin. “And periodically inspect for cracks or warping and replace every 57 years for safety.” Turner concurs and adds: “Don’t overfill them, this can make the whole situation worse. It’s one of those things that seems fine until it’s not.”

A Used Dryer Sheet Can Make Cleaning Your Toilet So Much Easier https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/clean-toilet-with-dryer-sheet/ Thu, 26 Dec 2024 13:09:06 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=654771 A simple dryer sheet is going to totally revolutionize the way you clean your toilets. Here's how to dust your toilet with a dryer sheet.

The post A Used Dryer Sheet Can Make Cleaning Your Toilet So Much Easier appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
One of the peskiest parts of cleaning a toilet is removing all the dust, lint, and hair accumulated on its surface. While your first instinct is to wet a sponge or rag with water and soap to wipe down the surface, if anything, that only adheres all that dry stuff to the seat even more firmly, making the process of cleaning it longer and more tedious than it was to begin with.

But what if I told you a simple product most people have lying around the house could simplify this whole process? If you have dryer sheets in your laundry room, they’re about to change how you clean your toilet forever.

How To Use Dryer Sheets To Clean a Toilet

Dryer sheets are made of polyester or other cellulose fibers, which happen to pick up hair and dust on the surface of a toilet than a wet sponge. Instead of going right in with something wet, put on a pair of gloves and run a dryer sheet over all the toilet surfaces. It will act like a lint roller, picking up all the dry muck on your seat and leaving it prepped for you to go in with your wet cleaning products for a perfect clean.

Check out TikTok user @The MatureCleaner using the method:

@theamateurcleaner Makes it easy to clean#cleantok #fyp #cleaninghacks #viral #housekeeper #houskeeepingtip #hack #home #trending midnight rain x daylight – kait .

If you’re concerned about wasting precious dryer sheets using this method, know you needn’t use a brand-new sheet to take advantage of it. The sheet’s fabric picks up the dust, not the softeners and fragrances it’s coated with.

Save your dryer sheets after drying your clothes. You can then use them again while cleaning your bathroom.

Alternatives To Dryer Sheets

As an alternative to using dryer sheets to dust your toilet, you can use dry pads for dry mops, like the Swiffer Sweeper, to achieve the same effect. However, this method eliminates the benefit of reusing the pads like you can with a dryer sheet (you wouldn’t want to clean your toilet with a dry pad you just used on your dirty floors).

Why People Hang Pennies in a Bag of Water Outside Their House https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bag-with-pennies-keep-flies-away/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 18:37:16 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=653918 If you're looking for a pest control experiment, or are puzzled by seeing pennies in a bag of water at a friend's house, we've got answers.

The post Why People Hang Pennies in a Bag of Water Outside Their House appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If you live somewhere with flies, you’re probably eager to find ways to get rid of them. After all, they’re both a nuisance and a potential hazard to your health. There are a plethora of remedies out there, all with varying degrees of success. But one you may not be familiar with involves hanging up some pennies in a bag of water on your porch. It sounds peculiar; does it even work? We looked into it for you.

How Does This Hack Work?

There are plenty of theories on why this hack might work, and most of them have something to do with how house flies see. According to pest control service Orkin, house flies have compound eyes that “can recognize even the slightest movements in a wide field” and “detect and react to movement at a quicker pace than species with simple eyes.” So if a house fly sees something moving, it will react to the potential danger much faster than a human could.

So, how does this relate to pennies and a bag of water? It has to do with reflections. Putting pennies in a bag of water creates a lot of reflective surfaces. When sunlight hits the water, it refracts. Adding pennies into the mix means that light has many more surfaces available to bounce off. So, the theory goes, having all that light interacting with a house fly’s sensitive compound eyes probably either overwhelms the fly or leaves it thinking there’s a lot of movement and that the area isn’t safe.

Does the Penny Bag Hack Actually Work?

Snopes has fact-checked this theory but came back with inconclusive results. Some folks swear it works, but others see no difference in the results. For example, this hack has been tested multiple times, including on Mythbusters, where it didn’t work. Still, Snopes pointed out that testing it in a controlled studio setting differs from testing it in natural light.

While it isn’t a proven pest control hack, there’s no harm in trying it yourself. It’s relatively cheap to set up, and if you have kids it can even be a fun science project for them to try with you. There’s even a few variations of this hack that you could try if you’re so inclined. You could compare just a plain bag of water, a bag with one penny, a bag with several coins, and others with other shiny inclusions such as foil.

This loft bed design maximizes the area between the mattress and floor, offering customizable bedroom storage solutions like drawers, shelves, and, in our case, a retractable desk.

Built in collaboration with cabinet maker Ethan O’Donnell, the headboard, footboard, mattress frame, dresser, and cubbies were all constructed separately and then assembled at the end to form the final product. Here is a step-by-step explanation of the process.

Before we begin

There are a few common themes throughout this build. Instead of reviewing them every time, I laid them out beforehand.

  • Everything was finished beforehand. You may have noticed that I always pre-finish my materials to make touch-ups and finishing touches easier. The components were all primed, painted, and polyurethaned prior to assembly.
  • The plywood edges were edge banded with iron-on edgebanding. We cleaned up the edges of the edge-banded plywood with a file, chisel, and sandpaper and painted them throughout the process.
  • Filling nail and screw holes and touching up paint are also procedures that were completed throughout the building process rather than waiting until the end.
  • The joining method was the same. Except where otherwise noted, all parts were set using wood glue and 1-1/2-in. brad nails and secured with pre-drilled and countersunk 1-1/2-in. screws.

King vs. California King: Which Bed Size Is Best for You? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/king-vs-california-king-bed-which-is-right-for-me/ Wed, 11 Dec 2024 20:18:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=653044 We asked the experts why room size, sleep habits, sleeper height and budget all factor into whether you select a king vs California king bed.

The post King vs. California King: Which Bed Size Is Best for You? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Are you remodelling your bedroom and upgrading your tired queen size bed? You might be wondering how king vs California king beds stack up against each other.

The size of your bed is more important than you might think. Research suggests adults should get at least seven hours of sleep a night. Despite this, over one-third of us get less than this. I sleep longer and sounder with a weighted blanket, the right bed sheets, a firm mattress, and a healthy nighttime routine. However, as a sprawling sleeper with a dog that curls up beside me, the right size of bed also plays a part.

I spoke to two mattress experts to understand when a king vs California king bed is better.

Why Is It Called a California King Bed?

The exact reason the California king bed got its name is up for debate. Some say it was invented in LA by a long-legged entrepreneur. Others say it’s related to the demand for bigger beds in sprawling California homes. These West Coast roots mean it’s also known as the Western bed.

Whatever the reason, super-sized mattresses grew in popularity among the Hollywood celebrities of the 1930s, and by the 1960s, research showed adults were growing taller and bedroom sizes were getting larger. However, it was the king size (or Eastern) bed that really took off in popularity when mattress sizes were standardized.

King vs. California King Bed: What Size Are They?

“A California king mattress is 72 inches wide by 84 inches long, while a standard king mattress is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long,” says mattress industry expert Byron Golub.

Contrary to popular belief, California kings aren’t bigger than king size beds. A king size bed actually has a slightly larger square footage. Basically, you’re getting slightly more length when you select California king vs king size beds, but they’re narrower.

King vs. California King Bed: How Much Do They Cost?

Arin Schultz, another industry expert working for organic mattress manufacturer Naturepedic, explains there’s no difference in cost between their king vs. California king bed sizes. “However, prices can vary based on the brand,” he says. “Some manufacturers charge a little more for a California king because it’s a specialized size and not in as high demand.”

King Bed Pros and Cons

Still weighing whether a king vs. California king bed is best for your room and nighttime rituals? Here are some benefits and drawbacks of selecting a king size bed to help you decide.

Pros of king size beds

  • More space to sprawl: “A king size bed offers ample space for couples, providing approximately 38 inches of personal space for each sleeper,” Golub says. “It’s an excellent option if one partner tends to be a restless or active sleeper, as it allows you to move around comfortably without disturbing the other.”
  • Perfect for pets and kids: If your kids or pets like to snuggle with you, a wider bed saves you from perching on the edge of the mattress to make room.
  • Wide selection of bedding: Because king size beds are more readily available than California king sizes, there are more options for bed sheets, and they can be more reasonably priced.

Cons of king size beds

  • Space constraints: If you have a narrow bedroom, a wider king size bed could be a tight fit and make the space feel more cramped.
  • Not ideal for long legs: “King size mattresses may not be long enough for taller-than-average sleepers,” Golub says. There’s nothing worse than feet hanging over the bottom of the bed.

California King Bed Pros and Cons

Considering trading in your king size bed for a California king? Check out these advantages and disadvantages before taking the plunge.

Pros of California king beds

  • A better fit for tight spaces: The longer-than-wide shape makes it a good bed for a small room when you still want space for night stands.
  • Offers more legroom: “A California king mattress is a good choice for 6 ft or taller people,” Golub says.
  • Can still work for pets: If your pet lies at the foot of your bed, the longer shape saves you from sleeping at an awkward angle.

Cons of California king beds

  • Cost: Expect to pay more for California king frames and mattresses compared to more widely-available king size versions.
  • Crowded with kids: The narrow width makes it a tighter squeeze when kids want to cuddle in.
  • Less bedding options: “Accessories like sheets and frames are more challenging to findand more expensive,” Golub says.

King vs. California King Bed: Which Is Right for Me?

Picking a California king bed could be the smart choice if you have a narrow bedroom, long legs, or a pet that loves to snuggle at your feet.

Schultz suggests a standard king-size bed for couples or individuals prioritizing width over length. It means you’re less likely to steal the covers from your partner, and the kids, kitties or canines can curl up beside you. Plus, you have more budget-friendly mattresses and matching accessories to choose from.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do king sheets fit a California king bed?

Even if you see a dream bedding set that’s only available in king size, don’t buy it with a view to squeezing it onto a California king bed. “King sheets typically do not fit a California king bed due to the 4 inches of additional length,” Schultz says.

Are any beds bigger than a California king?

There are beds bigger than the California king, but think carefully about whether you need one before buying. “Super King and Alaskan king mattresses [coming in at a whopping 108 inches by 108 inches] are much less common and are typically custom made,” Schultz says. It might be a luxurious bedroom idea, but the frame, mattress and bed sheet costs will be steep. Plus, the extra floor space it takes up might be cramped or even impossible in smaller bedrooms.

What size rug should I put under a California king?

The best California king bed rug size depends on the look you want to achieve. However, ensuring it extends at least 18 inches beyond the frame on either side of the bed while maintaining at least a foot of rug-free space around the wall edges helps the room look balanced and spacious.

Non-Toxic

The Avocado mattress topper has been granted multiple certifications. It’s Made Safe Certified, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified, Greenguard Gold Certified and Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified by UL Environment. Removable Cover

This topper has a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover with a hidden underside zipper. It can be removed, though the brand recommends spot cleaning only. If your cover starts looking shabby, you can purchase a replacement.

Flippable

Avocado recommends rotating and fluffing the mattress topper on a regular basis to help retain its loft. It can also be flipped.

How We Tested It

Our tester,Spencer Kildare, is a side sleeper who appreciates extra support and pressure relief. Especially since he’s been sleeping on the same spring mattress for 16 years. My mattress is very old and worn in. Its probably not the best to sleep on, but I have gotten accustomed to it, he explains. My sleep quality isnt the best, and I sometimes feel like Im 60% to 90% rested.

In hopes of improving his sleep quality, Spencer ordered the 3-inch Talalay latex topper. It costs between $45 and $72 more depending on the size, but it is softer and more plush than the Dunlop latex used in the 2-inch topper. The plush Talalay topper is designed to contour and alleviate shoulder and hip pain, making it ideal for side and combination sleepers like Spencer.

TheAvocado mattress topper arrived in a single box that Kildare could lift and move on his own. The topper itself was folded and wrapped in plastic. According to Kildare, it took a grand total of three minutes to get this mattress topper out of the box and centered on his bed. He did notice a factory smell, which he said was reminiscent of vanilla cake. He notes that the smell isnt bad, but the topper needs a week or more to completely off-gas.

Spencer tested a handful of mattress toppers over the course of several weeks. The Avocado mattress topper was the final topper he tested and it stood out among the rest. “It was the most different, in terms of construction, that I slept on,” he says. “It really has a cakey sort of feel and it mushes when pressure is applied. It provided excellent support to my sides without applying excess pressure.”

After sleeping on this mattress topper for five nights and a handful of mid-day naps, Spencer found that he loved the overall quality and spongey nature of the foam filling. His sleep quality drastically improved and he found himself waking up fully rested more often than not.

Though Spencer gave this topper five stars for comfort and support, he wishes it had corner straps to keep it from moving around on his bed. Straps! Somebody get this mattress topper some straps, he quips. This is a great topper, but those straps are important. Rather than corner straps, this topper relies on well-fitted sheets to keep it in place. Treat yourself to a set of Boll & Branch sheets to keep this topper in place.

Overall, Kildare recommends the Avocado mattress topper to anyone who tends to wake up feeling stiff or sore. It starts at just $199, and given its comfort and quality, your only regret will be that you didn’t buy it sooner.

After thoroughly researching the best mattress toppers, we sent the Avocado mattress topper to Spencer Kildare for testing. He put this topper on his 16-year-old mattress and slept on it for five consecutive nights along with a handful of afternoon naps.

During that time, he focused on its overall comfort and performance. He also considered how easy it was to unpack and place on the bed, whether or not it had any odors and its overall value. This is a mattress topper of excellent quality, he concludes. The soft cover of the topper adds to the spongey nature of the foam filling, and the covering is the most cloth-like of the bunch.

Best Overall Cooling Mattress Topper

The Company Store Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress Pad

Pros:

  • Effectively cools
  • Does not change the feel of your mattress
  • Lightweight and easy to put on the bed

Cons:

  • Very thin

If you love the feel of your bed but wish it was a smidge cooler at night, The Company Store’s cooling gel memory foam mattress pad is the cooling mattress topper you’ve been dreaming of. That’s because it keeps you cool without completely changing the feel of your bed.

The Company Store Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress Pad

This topper is made of pressure-relieving memory foam that molds to the shape of your body for ultimate comfort and support. It features a breathable knit top that’s infused with cooling gel to regulate your body temperature all night long. It also has panels that cover the entire mattress and tuck under the corners easily so you can rest assured that it won’t move during the night.

“This mattress topper had a nice cooling effect but it is quite thin,” says our tester Wendy Rose Gould. “It feels more like light pad that you’re sleeping on versus a dense topper. That said, I personally love my mattress so I appreciated that this one didn’t add a lot of excess.”

Gould also appreciated how easy it was to unpack this cooling mattress topper and put it on her bed. The whole process took her about five minutes. She also noted that there were no odors or off-gassing. All she had to do was put it on her bed, add her linen sheets and she was ready to hop in.“You can tell that a lot of technology and thought went into the design,” raves Gould. “It’s comfortable and it effectively cools you at night while providing a thin layer over your mattress.”

Maytag Washer and Dryer Review: Made Like They Used to Be https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/maytag-washer-and-dryer-review/ Thu, 21 Nov 2024 02:21:55 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=646337 Whether stacked or side-by-side, this Maytag washer and dryer combo offers great features and capacity.

They always say that appliances aren’t made like they used to be. I disagree, especially after testing the Maytag washer and dryer with a 16-hour fresh hold (they sure didn’t have that feature on a 1950’s washer/dryer set).

After testing this set for the past three months, I’ve seen how it performs with dark clothing, hairy pet beds, extra-large comforters, and smelly workout clothes. Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Maytag washer and dryer?

Maytag Front Load Washer with Extra Power and 16-Hr Fresh Hold

Maytag Front Load Electric Dryer with Extra Power and Quick Dry cycle

The Maytag Front Load Electric Washer with Extra Power and 16-Hr Fresh Hold and Front Load Electric Dryer with Extra Power and Quick Dry Cycle are complementary stackable models with large capacity, an Energy Star certification and a variety of settings and features. The washer can connect to Wi-Fi through a Maytag app.

The direct drive motor and stainless steel wash basket are covered by a 10-year limited parts warranty. Similarly, the dryer has a 10-year limited parts warranty on the drive motor and drum. Both the washer and dryer are available in three colors: volcano black, white and metallic slate.

Maytag Washer and Dryer Features

The front-load, 4.8-cubic foot capacity washing machine offers 14 cycles for your load of laundry. These include an assortment of settings, including specialty options for towels and bulky items. Use the ‘Quick Wash’ cycle for small-scale loads that are slightly dirty. Thanks to extra-high spin speeds, they will be clean in 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the ‘Sanitize’ cycle uses ultra-hot water temperatures to remove 99.9% of household bacteria.

Extra Cleaning Power at the Push of a Button

An ‘Extra Power’ button in the middle of the cycle display provides increased cleaning power. It boosts stain-fighting capability on any wash cycle with a unique dual-temperature wash. Press the ‘Wash Cycle’ Knob to activate the ‘Extra Power’ option, which activates a cold prewash cycle before the main cycle starts. When ‘Extra Power’ is started, the ‘Wash Cycle’ Knob will illuminate, and the run time remaining on the display will increase.

Unique Washer Options

With just a touch, you can activate additional wash options and features. These include:

  • A Fresh Hold setting keeps clothes from getting musty by periodically tumbling them while circulating air from an internal fan. Clothes will stay fresh for up to 16 hours after the original wash cycle ends.
  • A Steam option adds additional soak and wash time with a steam boost to many cycles, providing added cleaning power to remove tough stains. A built-in heater helps maintain perfect wash temperatures.

The Wi-Fi Connect option allows you to use the Maytag app to connect your washer to your home WiFi network. Features include remote start/stop from anywhere, cycle notifications and the ability to schedule wash cycles. There are also smart tips, a stain guide and more.

Sturdy and Built to Last

The 4.8-cubic foot capacity provides enough space to clean 30 towels at once. The direct-drive motor has the power to handle large loads, and the stainless steel basket is designed for many years of washes and built with rugged materials to last.

A Dozen Cycles

Maytag dryer control knob

The front loading 7.3-cubic foot capacity dryer has 12 cycles covering everything from delicates to bulky items. Like the washer, a sanitizing cycle uses extra-hot drying temperatures to remove up to 99.9% of common household bacteria. Theres also a steam refresh cycle that can spruce up your tired clothes without having to wash them. Meanwhile, the Quick Dry cycle allows you to dry a small load fast. When you combine it with the Quick Wash cycle on the washer, you are able to get some clothes ready to wear in quick order.

Get Extra Power to Dry Faster

The Extra Power option can be used with both Timed Dry and Sensor Cycles. Press the Cycle Control knob to activate the Extra Power option, which provides an additional 10 minutes of cycle time. When Extra Power is activated, the Cycle Control knob will illuminate, and the estimated time remaining on the display will show 10 additional minutes.

More Drying Options

The Wrinkle Prevent option is useful if you are not able to immediately remove a load. By touching the Wrinkle Prevent button, you get up to 150 minutes of periodic tumbling to help reduce wrinkling.

The Reduce Static option tells the dryer to automatically tumble, pause and introduce a small amount of moisture into the load to help reduce static and cut down on cling. This option adds approximately three minutes to the total cycle time.

The Steam option adds steam to the end of certain Sensor Cycles to help smooth wrinkles. It can be used with high or medium heat settings and adds approximately 15 minutes to the total cycle time.

Stackable

To accommodate tight spaces, a washer-dryer stacking kit can be used to place the dryer on top of the washing machine, freeing up extra room in your laundry area. To stack the machines, you need to purchase a stacking kit (approximately $50-60) that corresponds with your exact models. Whirlpool makes specific kits for its Maytag line of appliances.

The kit includes all the parts needed to safely support the washer and dryer, as well as detailed installation instructions. Maytag says installing the kit will require basic hand tools and novice repair experience, but having them installed by a professional might be worthwhile if you think youd be unable to lift the bulky dryer onto the washer.

How We Tested It

maytag front loading machine

I washed two small dog beds, which used to cause trouble in my old machine. The beds would never come out fully clean, and I would have to use an all-purpose cleaner to wipe out the washer and dryer afterward because they would be filled with dirt or fur. That was not the case this time. There wasnt a bunch of gook left in the washing machine., and I didnt have to use a lint roller to get the fur from our long-haired dog off.

When I put the dog beds in the dryer, I once again used the Bulky Items setting and let it rip. At the end of the cycle, the dog beds were dry and free of dirt and dog hair. Any stray dog hair landed in the lint collector, which was easy to remove. I was highly pleased that I did not have to clean out the inside of the washer or dryer, as Ive had to do with previous machines!

Cleaning a Comforter

I also wanted to wash a new king-sized comforter before using it because it was smelly. It fits with ease inside both the washing machine and dryer, and it couldnt have been easier. Previously, when I washed comforters or heavy blankets, the washing machine would tilt and stop working — requiring a reset. And with the dryer, multiple cycles were needed to get the comforters or blankets dry. This time, the comforter handled the wash cycle flawlessly. I think the lack of an agitator on the front loading machine allowed a better washing function.

Things did not get off-kilter, and the comforter came out fresh and clean. It took one cycle to dry it in the dryer, and it turned out perfectly warm and dry. I was so gleeful about it!

Washing Dark Clothing

For the next load, I washed a variety of dark clothing, including black leggings and black dress clothes. With our old machine, when I would wash dark clothes, they would come out covered in lint and/or dog hair. There was nothing that frustrated me more when that would happen. I cant tell you how many things were ruined. With the new machine, I set the clothes to the normal setting. At the end of the cycle, when I pulled everything out, I was so thrilled not to have anything stuck to my clothes. The washing machine delivered with flying colors.

Workout Gear

Next, I wanted to do a load of workout gear that had been sitting in the laundry basket all week. Everything was dirty and smelly when it went in, and it came out clean and fresh. The extra power buttons are fantastic: I honestly wasnt sure if they were necessary, but its a great feature. Be sure to add extra detergent to the extra power compartment.

Maytag Washer

Front-Loading Washer vs Top-Loading Washer

Lets talk about what its like to have a front-loading wash machine versus a top loader. Ourprevious washer was a traditional top-load machine with an extra-large capacity. The size was nice, and you could select a pre-soak button that would fill up the machine halfway and then let your stained clothes sit in the water and detergent to get some extra attention. But, as I mentioned earlier, our old machine would tend to freeze up with bulky loads. It would also make a lot of noise. And when the load was finished, I usually had to stand on my tip toes to get things out of the bottom of the drum.

With the front load machine, there is no pre-soak setting. I suppose you could stick everything in the bin, start a wash and hit pause to create the same effect. But maybe its not necessary with all of the great settings on this machine. Plus, Ive seen a number of comments from experts online that suggest your laundry will touch the laundry soap and water more often on a front-loading machine than it would on a top-loader that uses an agitator.

After using the front-loading washer for a while, I feel that its hard to tell when the machine is full. Maytag says the washer can handle 30 towels at once, but well before you get to that number, you start to feel like youre piling up pancakes on the breakfast plate and wonder if the syrup will make it to the bottom of the stack. But theyre right. Ive overstuffed the machine multiple times with two weeks of clothes, and everything is getting clean!

Pros

  • Stackable or side-by-side
  • Steam setting
  • Comes in multiple colors
  • Extra power feature gets clothing very clean
  • 16-hour fresh hold
  • 10-year warranty
  • Available in electric or gas

Cons

  • Hard to hear end-of-load alerts
  • Some buttons are similar or duplicative, which is confusing

FAQ

What is the advantage of leaving the door open on the washer when its not in use?

You need to leave the door open all of the time when not in use so it doesnt develop mold or mildew.

Can I do a full load on a quick wash and quick dry?

No. The settings are not meant for that. Quick Wash and Quick Dry should be used for small loads.

The dryer has both a ‘Regular’ and a ‘Normal’ setting. Whats the difference?

Though they sound similar, they are slightly different. The Regular setting lasts for 57 minutes on the second temperature setting out of four. The Normal setting uses hotter temperatures and lasts longer. It goes for 1:27 and uses the third temperature setting out of four.

Is Maytag made in China?

Though the various parts for the machines might be sourced from around the globe, these washers are assembled in Clyde, Ohio, and the dryers are assembled in Marion, Ohio.

Who owns Maytag now?

Maytag was a standalone company for more than 100 years before it was acquired by Whirlpool in 2006. In addition to washers and dryers, the Maytag brand makes refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges and microwave ovens. Other Whirlpool-owned brands include KitchenAid, JennAir and Amana.

What other reviewers/experts had to say

The dryer is as nice as the matching washer, said a verified Best Buy reviewer. It auto senses dampness and dries accordingly. It is also quiet, perhaps even more so than the washer.

Steam is nice, as is the wrinkle guard, said a verified Best Buy reviewer. The dryer seems to actively adjust the time remaining based on sensors and usually ends up drying faster than anticipated.

We have had this washing machine and the matching dryer, both on pedestals for the last month, said a Maytag reviewer. They are FANTASTIC.

Final Verdict

This Maytag washer/dryer combo delivers everything you would want for a large or small household. These machines can easily handle bigger jobs like comforters, dog beds and jumbo loads of towels. They can also pivot to smaller loads, delicates, or a quick wash of clothes if needed on short notice. This dynamic duo does an amazing job at everything I throw at them.

You will not be disappointed in the washing machine’s cleaning power or the dryer’s drying power. These good-looking machines are also stackable, so they can fit into a smaller space. I highly recommend them.

Where to Buy the Maytag Washer and Dryer

This Maytag washer and dryer set is available at Maytag, The Home Depot, and Best Buy. The washer is just under $900, and the dryer is around $800.

The post Carving Her Niche: Inside Jen Woodhouse’s DIY Dream Home appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Kentucky entrepreneur Jen Woodhouse made a living as a singer-songwriter before becoming a mom. The change in pace didnt stop her from being creative; she just ended up sketching a new life path. For my first Mothers Day, I got a miter saw, she says. Woodhouse got to work creating a shoe bench and was surprised by how easy it wasand how much she enjoyed it. If you can follow a recipe, you can build a table. Its that kind of thinking that inspired her to try bigger projects and launch a YouTube channel devoted to easy builds and fixes.

Inside the workshop

Woodhouses very first project when she, her husband, Adam, and kids, Evie and Liam, moved into their Louisville-area Colonial in 2017, was building a workshop adjacent to their new home. It needed to be more than 9 feet tall, so I could fit a full sheet of plywood and have a ton of electrical to run a table saw and shop vac at once and not flip a breaker, she says. It has more power than our house! In the workshop, she builds the new additions for her home on her own, with the camera rolling.

Stair runner solution

The Woodhouse family always found their staircase to be awkward. It was two-thirds carpeted and one-third hardwood floors. And it looked datedan orange honey-tone oak with beige carpet and balusters from the 90s.

But it was their Rhodesian ridgeback dog who really sealed the deal on getting them to do something about it. At 100 pounds, Watson is a big guy who in his old age started having mobility issues, and going up and down stairs was a challenge made even more complicated by the slippery hardwood. Woodhouse took the problem into her own hands and overhauled the stairwell, replacing the wood with white oak, adding new railings, newels and balusters, and adding a runner to provide better footing for Watson and her family.

The three-day project started with heavy sandpapering to get down to raw wood, followed by an oil refinish and paint job, and rug pad and runner installation. She added brass stair rods as a finishing touch, which she says was purely decorative and a bit pricey.

Check out Woodhouse’s step-by-step guide to installing a stair runner.

Basement home theater

Basement Home Theater

As a huge movie lover, Woodhouse saw instant potential in the basement. She combined her love of history and cinema to refashion a space into an Art -Decostyle home theater. To create the effect, she installed sconces and heightened the drama with gold trim.

My saw didnt cut that steep of an angle so I had to make a jig, she says.

Of course, the main attraction here is the drop ceiling. Previously, the ceiling was covered with everyday white tiles. Woodhouse knew a gilded look would recall the glory days of theater, so she scoured samples from Home Depot and chose a thin plastic, but incredibly ornate-looking, option. The material is so thin I actually cut it with scissors, she says.

The basement fireplace had a typical beam mantel, which she jazzed up by installing a custom build around it, highlighted by beveled edges. She kept the original wall paint and amplified some walls with a different strength of paint for a subtle tone-on-tone look.

Basement Home Theater

Home office with DIY built-in filing cabinets

While the office came fully loaded with built-in bookshelves and didnt need much TLC, Woodhouse was sold on the room for a different reason: the south- and east-facing windows with hand cranks. She added French doors a transom above them.

To give the shelving an even more functional twist, she built cabinets underneath. I want filing cabinets that didnt look like filing cabinets, she said, giving the entire piece a paint job using Roycroft Bottle Green from Sherwin-Williams. I pulled the color from the wallpaper, which I decided on after asking for dozens of samples online. The floral print looks Asian-inspired, and considering Im Filipino, it felt perfect.

Home Office With Diy Built In Filing Cabinets

Today, Woodhouse continues to share her love of DIY not only on her website (jenwoodhouse.com) but on her online marketplace, Sprucd Market, where vetted builders can upload and sell their project plans.

There’s a Hidden Fire Hazard in Your Bathroom You Might Be Ignoring https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bathroom-exhaust-fan-fire-hazard/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 15:23:31 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=647576 In the bathroom we're usually preoccupied with the plumbing. But danger lies above. Here's how to prevent your vent fan from starting a house fire.

The post There’s a Hidden Fire Hazard in Your Bathroom You Might Be Ignoring appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Over the years, most mechanical systems in your home will get serviced or otherwise checked for safety. One that probably gets neglected, however, is the exhaust fan in your bathroom. And if something goes wrong with that, it could start a house fire.

“As people adopt more automated systems like smart thermostats, smoke detectors and air purifiers traditional, unconnected devices like exhaust fans fall out of regular inspection and maintenance routines,” says Jon Gilbertson, president of Chris Heating & Cooling. “This gap creates a hidden vulnerability in what we think of as safe.”

This viral TikTok video from the wife of a firefighter points out how dust accumulates over the years in our bathroom fans, and how that creates what she defines as the “number one fire danger in your house.”

@unhingedreviewswjess Google will tell you the most common house fire is a kitchen fire. That may be the most common way fired get *started* in houses, but not how they burn to the ground. RJ said kitchen fires are usually put out by the time they arrive on scene. Its not only RJs opinion that this is the most dangerous fire in your home, but I met a retired FF who was working as a Fire Safety guy that worked for the city that 100% agreed with him. Exhaust fans accumulate sooo much dust and dirt over the years. I prefer to replace them over cleaning them. Theyre not terribly expensive or difficult to replace. A lot easier than replacing your home, and not to mention everything in it!! Stay safe, friends. #firefighter #firefightertiktok #firefighters #homeimprovement #renovation #diyproject #homeproject #homerenovation Suspense, horror, piano and music box – takaya

Here’s what can go wrong with bathroom exhaust fans, and how to prevent them from starting a fire in your home.

How Do Exhaust Fans Become a Fire Hazard?

This happens partly because we often overlook cleaning bathroom exhaust fans. They tend to accumulate dust. As that builds up on the fan blades and vents, the motor has to work harder to move air, which can cause it to overheat and cause the bearings to wear. All of this has the potential to spark a fire, especially if the motor shorts out.

Overusing the fan adds to the danger. “Because they’re almost always plugged in, any damage in the wiring or circuit can cause sparks that can spread into a fire,” says Timothy Wood, founder of Fix It Today.

Old and improperly installed wiring can also create problems, especially if the insulation on the wires degrades or the connections loosen. Gilbertson says this danger can be compounded by bathrooms’ high humidity.

Why Are Exhaust Fan Fires So Dangerous?

Exhaust fan fires commonly get out of control because they start above the ceiling, out of view and out of reach from fire detectors. In a confined area, like an attic, they are also likely to ignite insulation and other materials. Besides causing structural damage, those can create toxic smoke that seeps into living areas.

Exhaust fan fires are “particularly dangerous because the fan’s design and placement create a chimney effect,” says Gilbertson. “When a fire starts in or near the fan, the heat naturally rises through nearby ductwork, amplifying the fire’s intensity and allowing flames to move quickly into other parts of the home.”

How to Avoid Exhaust Fan Fires

We don’t want to get rid of our exhaust fans, since they keep our bathrooms from getting moldy, but we can keep them from being dangerous by:

  • Making sure the vent pipe, discharge end and fan blade are free from obstruction;
  • Cleaning the system out annually and checking wires and circuits for signs of wear and damage. To clan them properly, remove the exhaust fan cover and use a brush or vacuum to remove any debris from both sides of the cover and any accessible portion of the fan housing, says Kevin Busch, president at Dryer Vent Wizard.
  • Checking installation, with the exhaust fan vent pipe being less than 15 feet;
  • Installing a newer fan, with thermal protection, which shuts down if the fan overheats;
  • Making sure they’re properly vented, with exhaust not going directly into the attic, but rather outside of the home through a wall, soffit or roof.

“We find many bath fans that are not exhausted using the proper materials, which can allow fires to burn through the venting increasing the risk of a fire spreading,” says Busch.

Also, it’s very important to use exhaust fans in moderation and turn them off promptly. “Put the fan on a timer that only allows 30 minutes of use at a time,” says Todd Tripp, a home improvement expert with JustAnswer.com. “This lets the fan cool down and not run constantly as fans are easily left on continuously.”

Wood also recommends providing a dedicated circuit for the exhaust fan to avoid overloading. “If you must connect it to a circuit that services several other devices, make sure the total load doesn’t exceed that circuit’s capacity,” he says.
Lastly, consider installing a humidity sensor fan that runs only when necessary. This will reduce wear and prevent constant dust buildup, says Gilbertson, “a smart, hands-off solution for busy households.”

Happsy Mattress Review: This Organic Mattress Changed the Way I Sleep https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/happsy-mattress-review/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 17:04:35 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=645887 Handcrafted in the United States, the Happsy is made with certified organic materials and is one of the most budget-friendly organic mattresses.

The post Happsy Mattress Review: This Organic Mattress Changed the Way I Sleep appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As I get older, my sleep woes have increased, from tossing and turning to insomnia and wake-ups due to overheating. This year, I added shoulder and neck pain to the list. My first thought was that my morning aches were due to my aging mattress (it had exceeded its expectancy by five years), but first, I tried other remedies. I used white noise apps and blue light glasses. Then, thinking my pillow must cause pain, I upgraded to a latex pillow with a higher loft that didn’t settle like a down-filled pillow. None of those changes did the trick, so I came back to thinking it must be my conventional mattress, which was way past its prime and no longer providing the support it did years ago.

With so many mattress and mattress topper options on the market, I first needed to narrow the possibilities by listing my priorities. Because I’m concerned about chemicals and sensitive to odors, I focused on organic mattresses. Within the nontoxic mattress lineup, I wanted a Goldilocks optionnot too springy and soft, but with firm support, the right amount of pressure relief and a lush top. Simply put, I wanted a mattress that slept like a dream and that I could happily sleep on for many years. The Happsy Organic Latex Hybrid Mattresschecked all those boxes, so I tested it.

Here is what I learned through the course of unboxing and sleeping on the Happsy, plus which sleepers I recommend this mattress for. Spoiler alert: I can’t believe I didn’t make this switch years ago!

What is the Happsy mattress?

A bedroom features a large bed with a light-colored mattress and a dark wood frame. There are tree-patterned wallpaper, two hanging pendant lights, and a white nightstand with wicker baskets on the left. Blue patterned curtains adorn the window on the right.

Happsy is an online bedding brand that debuted its certified organic natural latex hybrid model in May 2017. Their organic mattress is made with a hybrid design featuring two inches of natural latex for pressure point relief and pocket springs that reduce motion transfer, so you don’t feel the flip-flop acrobatics of a partner while trying to catch your z’s.

Latex has some bounce to it, unlike the sinking feeling of memory foam, and instead of trapping heat as memory foam does, latex allows heat to escape. Latex is also built to last. “All-natural latex mattresses have been known to last for up to 25 years (with 15 years being quite common),” says Derek Hales, founder of NapLab. “Most mattresses may only last 8 to 10 years, so having a mattress with the incredible durability and longevity that latex provides is quite rare.”

A big selling point for me is that these mattresses are free from chemicals such as glue, adhesives, and flame retardants (conventional mattresses can have up to 10 pounds of glue in them). Along with natural latex in the comfort layer, the Happsy mattress is made of certified organic cotton and wool in the cover fabric, batting, and filling. The mattresses have been awarded certifications for using organic materials, meeting strict emissions standards, using fair-trade practices, and prioritizing overall sustainability. Despite being handcrafted in the United States with certified organic materials, this mattress is one of the most budget-friendly organic mattresses. As a bed-in-a-box, Happsy ships straight to your door, and shipping is free.

The outside covering of the Happsy mattress is certified nontoxic and organic by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), meaning it’s free of harmful allergenic materials and odors. Next is a comfort layer of two inches of Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)-certified organic natural latex. Natural latex is a resin extracted from the sap of the rubber tree. Organic latex is expensive, but that extra cost adds value.

The support core consists of eight inches of individually pocketed coils sewn together. The coils help reduce jostling and minimize motion transfer for a more peaceful and comfortable sleep. The coil gauge determines the firmness of the mattress. Happy offers two designs: medium-firm and plush. The medium-firm design has 15-1/2-gauge coils in the center, with 14-1/2-gauge around the perimeter for edge support. The plush design has alternating 15- and 16-gauge coils. The higher the gauge, the softer the mattress.

Happsy comes with a 120-night sleep trial. You can return the mattress anytime during the trial and receive a full refund. Happsy will arrange for the mattress to be picked up from your residence at no extra charge. The bed will either be recycled or donated to charity. Happsy recommends you hold onto the wrapping and the box until you know you’ll keep the mattress to make the return trip easier for all involved.

  • Designed to prevent overheating
  • Nontoxic: contains no flame retardants, glues, adhesives
  • Solid edge support all around

Product Features: Why Choose an Organic Mattress?

Close-up of a cream-colored, quilted mattress with an orange "Happsy" label on the side. The mattress features a textured, circular pattern on the surface and rests on a dark base.

What’s so special about an organic mattress? “Organic mattresses are naturally hypoallergenic, making them great for those with allergies or sensitive skin. They emit fewer chemicals,” says Marten Carlson, mattress expert and certified sleep science coach at Mattress Clarity. Carlson adds that organic materials are also more breathable than synthetic ones. “Even if you don’t have sensitive skin or allergies, organic mattresses offer cooling properties for all types of sleepers,” he says.

Kelly Murray, an adult sleep coach, adds that organic mattresses create a healthier sleep environment by eliminating the use of harmful chemicals. Traditional mattresses often contain harmful substances, including polyurethane, VOCs, PFAS, fiberglass, and flame retardants. “These chemicals can off-gas and be inhaled during sleep, which causes the body to become inflamed,” says Murray. “Inflammation triggers cortisol, an anti-inflammatory hormone, to be released in the body in an effort to fight the inflammation. Cortisol is also the ‘alert hormone’ that keeps us awake and is responsible for our fight-or-flight response. As a result, this anti-inflammatory response triggers night wakings, leading to a poor night’s sleep.”

Themattress is known for its chemical and organic materials, with certifications supporting their claims. Here is a breakdown of what each certification means and why it’s important:

  • Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certifies that a mattress is produced with at least 95% organic latex and ensures there’s minimal environmental impact; it also ensures positive social impact, such as fair working practices and wages throughout the supply chain.
  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certifies that textiles follow organic production processes such as spinning, knitting, and weaving.
  • GREENGUARD is a third-party testing program that measures chemical emissions from consumer products.
  • Organic Content Standard 100 (OCS) certification demonstrates that the organic fiber in Happsy products has been independently verified. OCS only accepts material from certified organic farms and tracks the chain of custody from the material’s source to the finished product.

How I Tested the Happsy Mattress

A rolled-up mattress wrapped in white fabric and brown paper is placed inside a cardboard box.

When the Happsy mattress-in-a-box arrived at my doorstep, I was eager to see how the hybrid mattress would perform. Let me start by walking you through the unboxing process.

The mattress came compressed, plastic-wrapped, and rolled up inside a tall delivery box. The box is heavy, weighing in at 126 pounds for the king-size mattress. Be sure to plan where you are going to put the mattress before unboxing. The mattress can be hard to move, especially without handles on the sides, which makes it challenging to rotate or relocate the mattress. I recommend having a helping hand when moving the mattress to the room you plan to use, especially since it comes without handles. My workaround? Use ratchet straps to create a grip and position the mattress.

Once I got the mattress unpacked and onto my bed frame, I carefully cut away the plastic wrapping. To my delight, the mattress expanded quickly, taking shape before my eyes. The directions mentioned that the mattress would take full shape in 48 hours or less, but it only took a few minutes for me.

One thing that immediately stood out was the absence of any off-gassing smell. As someone with a strong sensitivity to chemical odors and who prioritizes a healthy sleep environment, I was pleased to find that the Happsy mattress lived up to its promise of being free from harmful chemicals and odors.

I’m a tosser-turner, so I need a mattress that can handle all the sleep positions. After a few weeks on the Happsy, I found the medium-firm feel just right for most of my sleep positions but too firm for side sleeping. I needed more softness for my hips and shoulders, so I ordered the optional mattress topper. It gave the mattress two additional inches of soft plushness, with a supportive foundation underneath.

I was concerned about ordering a mattress topper that was not attached to the mattress but was pleasantly surprised to see that it barely shifted position, and it had an added benefitI can easily replace the mattress top (flashback to the time my foster pup had an accident on my new mattress!).

My sleep quality greatly improved during the testing period, and there was virtually no adjustment period once I added the mattress topper. In fact, I was thrilled to discover I wasn’t waking up throughout the night anymore due to overheating or feeling like I was sinking into the mattress.

Why You Should Trust Us

Despite being someone whose favorite pastimes include naps, I am a terrible sleeper. Over the years, I have tested mattresses with a mission to get a better night’s sleep. I’ve evaluated this mattress for feel, firmness, pressure relief, bounce and motion isolation. The mattress I tested is the medium-firm model with an optional topper, but it is also available in a plush design.

I also enlisted the expertise of Nichole Mondshein, sleep product expert at Sleepopolis; Marten Carlson, mattress expert and certified sleep science coach at Mattress Clarity; Kelly Murray, adult sleep coach; and Jill Zwarensteyn, certified sleep science coach at Sleep Advisor. I consulted with Derek Hales, founder and CEO at NapLab. In the past 10 years, he has personally tested 360+ different mattresses.

At Family Handyman, we’re familiar with mattress reviews. We’ve tested everything from the affordable DreamCloud Mattressto the cooling Sealy Cocoon Chilland the Classic Saatva mattresses. We add to our reviews often, assessing whether a new sleep product on the market is worth your time.

FAQ

Is Happsy good for side sleepers?

Latex hybrids are a smart choice for side sleepers because the latex can contour to shoulders and support some weight. The latex-coil combination is also a smart choice for anyone who gets too hot while sleeping. The latex, wool, and cotton are all naturally breathable, and the coil layers also dissipate heat.

Side sleepers generally gravitate toward softer mattresses, which provide deep pressure relief for hips and shoulders. I found the medium-firm mattress provided excellent support and pressure release for my back and stomach sleeping positions, but I found it too firm for side sleeping. I needed a bit of extra cushioning that the mattress topper addition provided. The pocket coils enhance airflow and support for side sleepers.

An additional two-inch latex layer with the optional topper will give you a more plush feel and more contouring for your shoulders and hips if you need it. “A medium-soft to medium-firm mattress is usually best for side sleepers, says Jill Zwarenteyn, certified sleep science coach at Sleep Advisor. “You want something that cushions your hips and shoulders while still supporting your spine. Hybrid mattresses tend to work well since they contour to your body.”

Nichole Mondschein, sleep product expert at Sleepopolis, adds, “Hybrid mattresses are a great option because they have structured support, combined with latex for comfortable cushioning on the hips and shoulders.”

Where is the Happsy mattress manufactured?

According to the manufacturer’s website, Happsy mattresses are manufactured and packaged in their own certified organic factory in the USA, which is used exclusively for organic mattress production, so there is no chance of contamination.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Across the different sites where this hybrid organic mattress is available, most customers have come to the same conclusion: They are happy with their Happsy! The mattress has nearly 2,185 customer reviews and a 4.5-star rating on the manufacturer’s website.

Verified reviewer Eliana says, “The mattress came with no smell at all, which is impressive for a mattress (and as someone who is very sensitive to mattress smells).”

Reviewer Klawdya is sensitive to chemical smells and raved, “This arrived with NO ODOR AT ALL. I’m chemically sensitive and I usually have to wash new products immediately and then put the products far from my bedroom for a few days and wash them again with a vinegar rinse and/or baking soda. This was perfectly non-toxic! I’m so happy with this company.”

Amazon reviewer Lillian Garcia says, “From the first night it was great! Now two months later, I am so happy with my mattress. It’s really comfortable and supports my body in all the right places. Great buy!”

Sorcha was searching for a nontoxic mattress when she found Happsy. “Reading about the toxic off-gassing of regular mattresses was a wake-up call. I didn’t just want a comfortable mattress; I wanted one that didn’t contain formaldehyde and other toxic materials. I’m happy I decided that I deserve a comfortable, safe mattress.”

And verified purchaser Lily says, “This mattress is supportive, but not firm, and the pillow top is very soft, but not squishy. It’s the perfect blend. To us, it’s more comfortable than a conventional mattress and box spring, minus all the smell and toxins! We were nervous about ordering, but were so pleasantly surprised when we opened it up. We also purchased the Happsy foundation, because our bed frame needed it for height, and it’s fantastic as well. Very sturdy, very well-built. Extremely happy with our Happsy!”

Happsy Organic Mattress vs. Silk & Snow Organic Mattress

Both mattresses are designed with certified organic materials, a breathable sleep surface and a pocketed coil support system. The Happsy lacks zoned support, while the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress does, with a combination of soft coils on the outer thirds and firmer coils on the middle thirds.

If you want a firmer mattress with stronger edge support and can stretch your budget, the Happsy may be a better fit. However, if you’re looking for a slightly more affordable option with multiple firmness levels (firm, medium-firm, plush), Silk & Snow may be a more suitable option, especially for different sleeper preferences.

Final Verdict

Much to my surprise, my allergies greatly improved while sleeping on the Happsy, which is hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant. The organic wool and latex naturally repel dust mites, mold and other allergens, making it a great option for people like me with dust mite allergies or asthma.

I am seriously impressed with this mattress’s comfort performance. While I felt incredibly supported, the mattress still provided cloud-like comfort. The biggest bonus: my neck and shoulder pain went away! If you prefer not to sink into the mattress, you’ll definitely want to consider this mattress.

Helix, one of the most awarded mattress brands on the internet, launched a line of eco-friendly mattresses just a few years ago. Birch by Helix Sleep uses natural and organic materials like wool, latex and cotton to construct medium-firm mattresses, which are great for pressure relief. Birch mattresses are handmade in Phoenix, Arizona and they are Greenguard Gold Certified, so you can trust that the Birch mattress you lay your head on is made responsibly and with care.

After reading countless consumer reviews raving about Birch mattresses, we knew we had to do some testing of our own. So, we sent the Birch Natural Mattress to Richard Glenn, who tested the mattress every night for a month. Here are his honest, unfiltered thoughts about the mattress.

What is the Birch Natural Mattress?

The Birch Natural Mattress is a hybrid mattress composed of natural and organic materials. Its hybrid design means it has plush layers of wool, cotton and latex for comfort and supportive coils underneath. A hybrid mattress is great for various sleepers and sleeping positionsincluding side sleepersbecause it combines the best of a soft and firm mattress. This hybrid construction also achieves a medium-firm feel for people who like a middle-of-the-road mattress in terms of firmness.

Birch mattresses pass rigorous tests to achieve the highest standards for natural and organic products. The Birch Natural Mattress is Greenguard Gold, GOTS, Eco-Institute and Fair Trade Certified. Birchs partners also adhere to strict ethical practices and responsibly source all organic and natural components.

Pros:

  • Well-built; we expect it to last for many years after testing
  • Hybrid design with coils and comfort layers (no memory foam)
  • Good for hot sleepers and those with joint pain
  • Ideal for back, stomach and side sleepers
  • Hassle-free delivery
  • Non-toxic, organic and natural materials
  • Cooling properties

Cons:

  • Bottom edge lacks support
  • Pillows are thin and flimsy
  • Contains latex, so it is not suitable for those with latex allergies

Birch Natural Mattress Product Features

Birch Natural Mattress

Cooling Layers

The six-layer mattress is topped with a layer of breathable, organic cotton, which wicks moisture and promotes airflow. Underneath the cotton lie absorbent organic wool and breathable latex, further promoting a cool nights sleep.

Pressure Relief

With a medium-firm feel, thanks to its supportive bottom coils and layers of natural, breathable materials, this is an optimal mattress for side, back and stomach sleepers. The mattress is made with premium hypoallergenic natural materials, like sap from rubber trees, to create the right pressure relief and contour for your body.

Supportive Feel

The base of the Birch Natural Mattress has up to 1,000 individually wrapped coils. These coils provide reinforced support under your hips and cradle your body while helping to align your spine. The mattress is also reinforced lengthwise to provide edge support.

Hassle-Free Setup

When you order a Birch mattress, the delivery team will unpack your new bed and set it up in your desired location. Theyll also remove your old mattress and dispose of the packaging. This way, you dont have to worry about hauling in a heavy mattress on your own or getting rid of your old one ahead of delivery.

How We Tested It

Here are our honest thoughts after a full month of sleep testing on the Birch Natural Mattress.

Delivery and Setup

Our product tester, Richard Glenn, did not opt for the in-home delivery and setup service. Instead, he flipped the boxed mattress end over end up a flight of stairs to his bedroom. From there, he could unbox it and cut away the plastic. It was very securely wrapped. I used small scissors to cut away the outer plastic, Richard says. It was a little tough to get through, but I didnt want to use a box cutter for fear of damaging the mattress.

The mattress took a full 48 hours to expand and feel firm enough to sleep on, which is something you may want to consider if you have your current bed removed for an upgrade to the Birch Natural Mattress. I slept on it before it was fully inflated, and it seemed squishy, Richard says. 24 hours later, it came to its full firmness and felt much more supportive.

The mattress took about three hours to move from box to bed, unbox and set up. Two pillows were also included in the box. Impressively, there was no chemical smell or off-gassing upon opening.

Birch Natural Mattress in packaging with two pillows

One thing Richard did note about delivery was that the hand holes in the box arrived damaged, making the box challenging to lift. Thats why I had to flip it up the stairs, Richard explains. I recommend having a second person help you lift the box if you opt out of the in-home service. The brand could stand to reinforce the handholds in the box.

Sleep Experience

On his old memory foam mattress, Richard regularly woke up with hip pain. However, after sleeping on the new Birch Natural Mattress, Richard hasnt been bothered by joint pain like he was previously. Its not a cure-all, but its good enough that I dont even think about waking up achy, he says. When I do sleep on my back, I dont have any lower back pain because of the support from the mattress.

When it came time to test the mattress’s cooling features, Richard says it stayed consistently cool and did not reflect heat to his body like his old Tempur-Pedic mattress.

The medium firmness is a great balance between support and comfort, Richard says. Interestingly, the mattress feels much softer when sitting upright, but laying down with your body weight distributed, it feels much firmer.

Id recommend the Birch Natural Mattress to anyone with joint pain. It has the support of a spring bed without sacrificing comfort, Richard says. If youve been sleeping on memory foam and wake up sweaty, this mattress (made without memory foam) is worth trying.

Looking for alternatives? We tested nine other options to find the best mattress in a box.

Why You Should Trust Us

We know how difficult it can be to shop for beds online without sleeping on them first. Thats why we tested the Birch Natural Mattress every night for a month. Our product tester, Richard Glenn, suffers from hip and joint pain; hes also a hot sleeper who lives in Southern California. Thats to say, he was the perfect candidate to test the Birch mattresss pressure-relieving and cooling features. From delivery and setup to sleep, Richard put the Birch mattress through a series of rigorous tests to tell you what the mattress is really like in person.

FAQ

Does a birch mattress have fiberglass?

No. Birch mattresses are made without the use of fiberglass.

Who is the parent company of Birch mattress?

Helix Sleep, one of the most awarded mattress brands on the internet, launched Birch by Helix, a line of eco-friendly mattresses just a few years ago.

Do Birch mattresses have springs?

Yes. They have individually wrapped coils that provide support and help reduce motion transfer.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Birch Natural Mattress has garnered more than 5,000 reviews on the Birch site and a 4.5-star rating. Buyers love the medium-feel firmness and the overall quality of the mattress. Complaints often have to do with the quality of pillows, wait time for inflation and customer service. A few reviewers note that the mattress seems to run on the smaller side compared to standard-size mattresses.

Comparison of Birch Natural Mattresses

Birch sells two Natural Mattresses, the Birch Natural Mattress and the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress. The first is the brands most popular breathable mattress, and the second is an upgraded version. The Luxe Natural Mattress has extra comfort and cradling layers but offers the same medium-firm feel.

Final Verdict

Birch Natural Mattress close up

If youre looking for a non-toxic mattress made with certified organic materials, then the Birch Natural Mattress is hard to beat, but be sure to check out Avocado mattresses, too. Not only is the quality, handmade construction ethically and sustainably produced, but the hybrid design of the mattress is suitable for most types of sleepers. Its medium-firm feel is a great middle-ground for those seeking comfort and support. We also appreciate that the Birch Natural Mattress is made without memory foam if youre looking for an alternative to the standard memory foam boxed mattress.

Where to Buy the Birch Natural Mattress

You can shop the Birch Natural Mattress starting at $1,374, but be sure to look for seasonal sales to score a competitive discount. You can also shop the mattress directly from Helix Sleep.

Can You Paint a Kitchen Tile Backsplash (And Should You?) https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/can-you-paint-tile-backsplash/ Mon, 21 Oct 2024 19:56:41 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=640815 It's budget and DIY friendly, but often ends with regrets. Here's how to figure out if painting your kitchen backsplash is a good idea.

The post Can You Paint a Kitchen Tile Backsplash (And Should You?) appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
For those of us in homes with color schemes we’re not terribly fond of, an obvious question that comes to mind is: Can you paint your kitchen tile backsplash? A short browse through social media suggests the obvious answer is “yes.”

But don’t be fooled by DIY decor mania. While it’s tempting to slap a coat of paint on the tile rather than go through the hassle of redoing it, proceed with caution. “There’s really only one good reason to paint a kitchen backsplash and a whole lot of bad ones,” says Brandon Walker, superintendent at ASAP Restoration.

Here’s how to figure out which category your project falls under and how to paint it correctly.

Can You Paint Tile Backsplash?

Yes, in some circumstances, you can paint a kitchen tile backsplash. If you use the correct paint and method, it can be a viable way to update the look of your kitchen, saving time and money.

“That’s one of the few benefits of painting tiled backsplash,” says Walker. “A fresh coat of paint, even on tile, can potentially look better than whatever dated style is there already, and you get the new look without having to commit to a full redux of the kitchen space.”

Factors to Consider Before Painting Tile Backsplash

First, think about whether it will actually look good. “Most of the time, painting over tile doesn’t please the eyes,” says Walker. That’s because there are textural differences between the tiles and the grout. “Without contrast to set apart the grout from the tile, it has a strange, degraded feel to it,” he says.

If you do decide to proceed with painting your kitchen tile backsplash, formulate a plan based on the kind of tiles you have.

  • Tile material: Usually, non-porous tiles, like glazed ceramic, are smoother and thus are easier to paint vs. natural stone or other porous tiles. However, impervious surfaces are more likely to allow moisture to build up in small pockets behind the paint, causing it to peel.
  • Texture: If your tiles are textured, they’ll be more difficult to cover evenly.
  • Condition: Older or worn tiles may not hold paint well. You might also want to repair chipped tiles before painting.
  • Peel-and-stick: Don’t bother painting these, says Walker. “It will almost certainly be more efficient, more cost-effective and better looking to simply pull them off the wall and paint the wall instead,” he says.

Before painting, also consider your grout and whether you want to paint it. If you do, make repairs first and get rid of any mold. “Some people attempt to cover up mold growth by painting, but you’ll be quickly irritated as it seeps through the layers of paint and reemerges just as strong and smelly as before,” says Walker.

Also, keep in mind that painting a kitchen tile backsplash is only a temporary fix, says handyman Shlomo Cherniak. Over time, especially in high-use areas, the paint is likely to chip or peel. This can also become unsanitary, with opportunistic sites for bacteria.

What Types of Paint Should You Use on a Tile Backsplash?

It depends on the kind of tile you are painting over, but in general, your best bet is an epoxy-based or specialized tile paint, which will give you the best adhesion and durability.

Many people wonder about using chalk paint or spray paint. Chalk paint can be used, but it needs to be sealed properly afterward, says Cherniak. “Spray paint is not recommended as it doesn’t adhere well to tiles or hold up to moisture,” he adds.

Both Cherniak and Walker emphasize to avoid using wall paint. “Latex paint is probably the worst option, because it is made with fine particles of plastic that aren’t as durable as an epoxy or resin paint would be,” says Walker.

For primer, Walker recommends using a high-quality bonding primer, like XIM, because there’s less chance of the paint chipping, peeling or degrading over time. Choose one designed for tiles. Also opt for a high-quality polyurethane sealant.

How to Paint a Tile Backsplash

  • Clean the tiles and grout, making sure all soap scum and cleanser are removed.
  • Let dry completely.
  • Scuff or sand the tiles lightly for better primer adhesion.
  • Give it another wipe down with a clean cloth, but no cleaning solutions, to remove dust.
  • Mask off the wall and countertop with tape or a drop cloth to protect them from paint.
  • Apply the primer, then let it dry completely.
  • Apply the paint in thin, even coats, letting it dry completely between each coat until there is a uniform color across the whole backsplash.
  • Seal the painted tiles with a clear topcoat.

“The key is to test the paint on a small, hidden area first,” says Cherniak. “This trick ensures the results will meet your expectations, though it is also critical to note that particularly in high-traffic areas like the kitchen, the painted tiles may not last as long as the newer ones and can peel or chip over time.”

FAQ

How do you seal painted tile backsplash?

Use a polyurethane sealer applied evenly with a foam brush. Walker recommends doing this after the last coat of paint has dried, but not yet cured.

“The only caveat to this is if the sealant is of a higher quality than the paint, it may seal in the exothermic reaction of the paint below it before a final cure and then cause cracking or worse,” he says. “In this scenario, you would want to wait for the final coat of paint to fully cure before adding a sealant to the top.”

We Tried the Shark StainStriker, and The Results Were Shocking https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/shark-stainstriker-review/ Wed, 16 Oct 2024 23:56:28 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=639959 We tried the viral Shark StainStriker to see how it really performs on tough stains. Here’s what happened.

Say what you will, but carpet flooring has perksespecially if youre a small child or pet. It provides a soft cushion to what would otherwise be hard flooring. However, carpet (mainly white or light-hued) can be challenging to maintain without a proper carpet cleaner. While the best carpet cleaners are good, sometimes a portable spot cleaner for carpet and upholstery gets the job done better (and more efficiently).

When I first saw the Shark StainStriker advertised, I knew I had to try it. Its a super-compact, lightweight carpet and upholstery cleaner that tackles spills and messes anywhere in the home. As someone who has paid hundreds to professionally clean their carpets, I was excited to see how the StainStriker would perform. Heres how testing the portable cleaning machine went.

What is the Shark StainStriker?

The Shark StainStriker is a portable carpet and upholstery cleaning machine that spot-treats and removes stains. It uses a dual-activated solution to treat multiple surfaces throughout your home, including carpets, rugs, upholstery, furniture and more.

The compact cleaning machine weighs less than 10 pounds, so it’s easy to carry to any part of the home. The dual-activated cleaning solution uses OXY to clean tough stains like embedded dirt, pet messes and food stains. No premix or pre-treatment is required either. The StainStriker offers instant stain elimination.

The handheld cleaning tool also features powerful suction to lift liquid, dirt and debris during cleaning. The StainStriker works on tough odors and stains from pets and even smokers.

Easy Cleaning and Storage

Shark Stainstriker easy cleaning

Weighing just 8.51 pounds, the StainStriker is easily portable. You can take it upstairs or downstairs, wherever you need to clean. Plus, you can tuck it away out of sight when not in use, and it doesnt take up much space. Its less than a foot wide, less than 3 inches long and 15 inches tall. The hose length is just over four feet, and the power cord is 12 feet long, so you should have no problem reaching from outlet to mess in an average-size room!

Whats In the Box

The StainStriker comes with 12 ounces of OXY Multiplier Formula and six ounces of CarpetXpert Deep Clean Pro solutionthe two cleaning liquids that combine to clean stains and spills. These are both mini sizes of the cleaning liquids, and Shark sells 32-ounce versions of the CarpetXpert and OXY Multiplier for $16 and $14, respectively.

Youll also get the 3.5-inch reversible bristle tool, the pet mess tool, an integrated crevice tool for hard-to-reach places and an instruction booklet.

Shipping and Returns

Shark offers free shipping on orders of $99 or more, so the StainStriker should ship for free. Theres also a 60-day money-back guarantee.

How We Tested It

I put the StainStriker through a series of tests using real-life, set-in stains and fabricated stains (stains I created solely to test the machines cleaning power). I was surprised by the results.

After unboxing the StainStriker, I examined all the parts to be sure attachments and cleaning agents were included per the product description. While removing the packaging, I noticed that the exterior of the dirty water tank (made of hard plastic) was scratched. It wasnt cracked or broken, and the scratches didnt affect the machines operation.

Id describe the scratches as cosmetic flaws, but the cleaning machine was very well packaged in the box, so Im unsure when the damage occurred. My guess is that the damage was a manufacturing default, not a shipping issue. Overall, the scratches were more of an annoyance than anything.

Shark Stainstriker filling with stain striker

Next, I filled the StainStriker Tank with OXY Multiplier. I filled the CarpetXpert Tank with water and the CarpetXpert Deep Clean Pro solution. Once the machine was full, I walked it into the dining room, where there was a set-in wine stain that had been there for years, and plugged the machine in.

(Even full of water and cleaning solution, the StainStriker was easy for me to carry from room to room.) I was hopeful as I pressed the on/off button and got ready to attack the stain. I sprayed the stain using the button on the handle first, then scrubbed repeatedly, trying to remove the stain. I did that a few times and waited.

Unfortunately, the stain did not budge. In fairness, it is the mother stain of all stains. I had my carpets professionally cleaned recently, and the expert carpet cleaner couldnt get the stain to lift either. So, I went into the living room, over to a brown stain (on white carpet) next to the mantel.

The stain was either a result of spilled coffee or a pet accident and was disclosed to us by the prior homeowners, who had tried to remove it with no luck. The professionals couldnt remove itwith their industrial carpet cleanerseither. This time, I wasnt so hopeful. Still, I set the StainStriker next to the stain, plugged it in, and went to work. What happened next was magic.

Before and After of carpet stain

The light brown stain (which was only noticeable in certain lighting, probably due to years of attempted removals) started to lift! I was shocked. I walked over to the fireplace multiple times throughout the day to ensure my eyes werent playing tricks on me. The stain was gone.

Shark Stainstriker cleaning stains

After that, I tried the StainStriker on upholstery. I had a sample of couch fabric handy from a recent furniture purchase that was perfect for the job. (Note: The fabric is light tan and prone to staining.) On one side, I rubbed in used coffee grounds and on the other, I smeared ketchup. Then, I let each stain sit for about four hours. After that, it was time to clean. I couldnt quite remove either stain entirely. I may have rubbed in each side a little too eagerly after my luck in the living room.

Shark Stainstriker fabric stains

The StainStriker quickly pulled the coffee grounds and ketchup away from the fabric, but unfortunately, there were still shadows of the stains left on the fabric after it had dried from the cleaning. A few factors were working against the StainStriker. First off, how often will you violently rub in a stain when you make a mess in real life? Probably not often–or ever. You’re better off getting the StainStriker on a stain before its pressed into carpet or upholstery fibers. Additionally, darker and performance fabrics are easier to treat and clean.

Shark Stainstriker Crevice tool

Despite a few letdowns, I was still impressed with the StainStriker overall for several reasons. 1) Its easy to move, operate and clean. 2) Every stain is different, and the StainStriker was able to lift a stain that even professional carpet cleaners couldnt. 3) The cleaning solution smells excellent. While the StainStriker didnt fully lift the stains I created to test it, it removed the odor and left the fabric smelling fresh. 4) The StainStriker is affordable compared to other small, commercial-grade fabric and carpet cleaners.

Shark Stainstriker in use

The StainStriker is great if you frequently clean small spills and accidents, especially from pets. It even has a Pet Mess Tool, which I found as effective as the main cleaning head. The Pet Mess Tool isolates the dirty water from the machine for easy cleaning and zero cross-contamination.

Shark Stainstriker filling water

My only qualm with the StainStriker is that its intended for spot cleaning, but theres only one fill line for the water tank (which takes water and CarpetXpert), so you have to fill it fully every time you use it. Additionally, you shouldnt leave unused cleaning solutions in either tank for more than 5-7 days, so some cleaning solutions will inevitably be wasted. That was a bummer, especially since the machine only comes with two small bottles of cleaning solution.

FAQ

Shark Stainstriker Dirty Water Tank

Can you leave water in Shark StainStriker?

According to Shark customer support, you leave clean water in the StainStriker for a short period, of five to seven days. For long-term storage (weeks), they recommend storing unused cleaning solutions in the tank off the unit to prevent clogging or build-up in the machine. However, unused CarpetXpert solution (the solution thats diluted with water) should be discarded after short-term use.

The dirty water tank should be emptied and cleaned after each use to prevent odors, mildew, mold and bacteria.

Does the Shark StainStriker use steam?

No. It does not use steam; it uses water, suction, and two cleaning solutions.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Shark StainStriker has a 4.5-star rating on Amazon with more than 3,000 customer reviews. The consensus among customers is that the machine is lightweight, easy to operate and works well on carpet and upholstery. Many buyers say theyve had success removing stubborn stains, too. Additionally, several people like the clean smell the cleaning solution leaves behind and appreciate the impressive suction power.

Verified purchaser Mal says, I bought this to treat some old stains when it was on sale, and shortly thereafter had a pet that got VERY sick and managed to do significant damage on the rugs, couches and chairs in my home (including vomit, urine, feces, you name it). It has been worth its weight in gold and made the horrible experience somewhat manageable. Seriously, the house is even cleaner than it was before.

I’m a Shark devotee for life now, Mal adds. Blew my old Bissel out of the water. Love that it has a handle for easy carry, long cord for mobility, and you can leave the solution in the unit between uses. Also super easy to clean out the dirty water bin and cleaning heads. The suction is great. I wish the hose was a tad longer (have to move it around a bit) but can deal with that.

Honestly if you are on the fence and have a pet or kids, just buy it for the peace of mind, they say.

Shark StainStriker vs. Bissell Little Green HydroSteam

The Shark StainStriker is comparable to the Bissell Little Green HydroStem, which we tested for our guide, Best Carpet Cleaners for Pet Stains. However, when comparing the two products, the StainStriker is more compact and simpler to use (with a single-button on/off switch) than the HydroSteam. The HydroSteam also has a steam cleaning setting, which the StainStriker does not have, plus quieter operation.

Both carpet cleaning machines have easily removable dirty water tanks that can be dumped and cleaned thoroughly in the sink. Additionally, the StainStriker has a hose-cleaning tool and a pet-cleaning tool that keeps pet messes far away from the machine, and the HydroSteam does not have either. The StainStriker takes two cleaning solutions, while the HydroSteam only takes one, and the StainStriker has a wider cleaning brush head but a smaller dirty water tank.

Lastly, perhaps most importantly, the StainStriker retails for $90 less than the HydroSteam.

Final Verdict

At such a reasonable price point, I think the Shark StainStriker is a great tool to have in your arsenal of cleaning products. Of course, the machines effectiveness will depend on several variables: the fabric or carpet youre cleaning, the stain (red and oil-based stains are often more challenging to treat, for instance), and how long the stain has been left to sit.

However, the StainStriker is affordable, easy to operate, portable and effective on many stainsincluding old stains that professional carpet cleaners couldnt even get to budge! For that reason, Id recommend it to anyone who needs to stain-treat fabrics and carpets frequently (aka, people with pets and children).

Where to Buy the StainStriker

I Tried It

Shark StainStriker Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner

An impressive carpet cleaner for spot-treating stains

You can buy the StainStriker directly from Shark, at Walmart and on Amazon. The retail price is $140, but the machine is often marked down.

If it’s time to replace your washing machine, odds are you’ve been going back and forth between Maytag vs Whirlpool. These two reputable washer brands have been around for decades and make some of the best washing machines on the market. Both offer a variety of models at a wide range of price points, so there’s a machine for every household.

In an effort to help settle the Maytag vs. Whirlpool debateand help you make an informed decision on which brand is the best for youwe talked to an industry expert with over 15 years of hands-on experience and tested a popular model from each brand. We then took all of the input and testing results into this handy comparison guide. Once you decide where you stand on the Maytag vs. Whirlpool discussion, you can get busy shopping. Get ready to have the cleanest laundry around!

What’s the Difference Between Maytag and Whirlpool Washers?

Maytag and Whirlpool are two leading brands in the appliance industry. Both companies strive to provide innovative and dependable appliances.

Maytag built its first washing machine in 1907. This rudimentary washer consisted of a wooden tub with a hand
crank. As the crank was turned, the clothes were pulled through the water. Their models have certainly come a long way in their nearly 120 years of business. Today, Maytag is known for producing durable yet affordable machines.

Whirlpool, on the other hand, was founded in 1911 and focused on electric washers. Their electric wringer-washer evolved over time and the brand now offers a wide range of appliances including refrigerators, cooktops, dishwashers and more. Whirlpool washers are generally easy to use and come with a plethora of additional features and options for different types of loads.

The Whirlpool Corporation purchased Maytag in 2006. However, the two brands continue to operate as independent appliance manufacturers and there are several differences between them.

All About Maytag Washers

Maytag Washer

According to Dennis G., Lead Appliance Expert at Comfort Appliance Repair in Tennessee, Maytag washers are built tough. “They are known for their durability and can handle heavy-duty loads, which is great if you’re running large loads on a regular basis,” he says.

Senior shopping editor Caroline Lubinsky tested the Maytag Front Load Washer with Extra Power and 12-Hr Fresh Spin option. This washer, which has a capacity of 4.5 cubic feet, is actually smaller than Lubinsky’s old washing machine. Admittedly, she was skeptical of a smaller machine at first. However, she was delighted to find that it was still able to meet her needs. “I’m able to wash my king-sized comforter easily, which is all that I was concerned about fitting,” she explains.

In addition to handling large loads of clothes and bedding, Lubinsky appreciates how well this machine actually cleans her laundry. “I have three dogs and pet hair was a real issue with the old set,” she says. “This washing machine seems to get most of the embedded dog hairs on clothing and bedding.”

According to Lubinsky, the average load takes around an hour to complete, but can change depending on which of the 10 wash cycles you select. It also has an auto-hold feature, which Lubinsky finds especially helpful. This feature allows your clothes to stay fresh even if you forget to put them immediately in the dryer. “I constantly forget to throw things in the dryer after washing them and frequently have to rewash them. Now, I don’t have to do that,” she says.

All About Whirlpool Washers

Whirlpool Washer

According to Dennis, Whirlpool washers are more versatile than Maytag washers thanks to their advanced features. “Whirlpool focuses on making your laundry process smoother with smart features and more energy-efficient cycles,” he explains.

Associate product tester Sheri Kaz replaced her old Kenmore washer with the Whirlpool Top Load Washer with 2 in 1 Removable Agitator. After a year of use, Kaz has found plenty to love about her Whirlpool washer but the removable agitator is number one. “The thing that I appreciate the most is how gentle it is on my clothes when I take the agitator out,” she says.

Kaz also loves this washer’s large capacity. At 5.3 cubic feet, it holds twice as much as her old washer. That said, Kaz often finds that retrieving her items from this top loader’s deep drum isn’t the most convenient thing. “I curse the machine every time I have to stand on my tippy toes or grab a stool to fish my socks out of the super deep drum,” she says.

On laundry days, Kaz prefers the machine’s deep fill water option to the standard setting. “I feel that it needs more water in the tub to really clean and rinse the clothes properly,” she explains. “Also, rather than using the auto detergent dispense function, I tend to like using powder detergent in a cardboard box rather than liquid in a plastic bottle. As a result, I dissolve the detergent in hot water, then pour it into the machine.”

If you prefer liquid detergent, you’re in luck. According to Kaz, using the liquid detergent with the auto dispense function cleans very well. However, this function isn’t perfect. “The downside is that when using this function, the rinse water doesn’t run clear – it’s always very soapy,” says Kaz. “Therefore, I prefer using two rinses when using the auto dispense mode. Either way I’m using more water.”

FAQ

Do Maytag washers last long?

According to Dennis, a Maytag washer will last you around 10 to 12 years with proper care and maintenance. “Simple maintenance like cleaning the filters and avoiding overloading can help extend its life,” he explains.

Is a Maytag washer better than a Whirlpool?

When it comes to Maytag vs Whirlpool, Dennis says that one isn’t necessarily better than the other. Rather, it depends on your needs. If you often have heavy-duty loads then Dennis recommends a Maytag washer. But if you want more control over settings and efficiency, Whirlpool might be the better fit.

What is the difference between Whirlpool and Maytag?

As Dennis pointed out above, Maytag washers are built tough. “These washers are perfect for heavy loads and long-term use. If you’re looking for something that can take a beating, Maytag is great,” he explains.

Whirlpool, on the other hand, are more versatile with their advanced features. “Whirlpool focuses on making your laundry process smoother with smart features and more energy-efficient cycles,” says Dennis.

Should your machine ever go on the fritz, you can rest assured knowing that whichever brand you buy can likely be repaired. According to Dennis, Maytag and Whirlpool machines share some parts so its not hard to find technicians who can work on both brands. “Whirlpool parts might be a little easier to find just because its a more common brand, but both Whirlpool and Maytag are pretty well-supported in the U.S. for parts and repairs,” he explains.

The Maytag vs Whirlpool Bottom Line

You cant go wrong with either a Maytag or Whirlpool washer. Both brands offer durable, dependable machines that will keep your clothes clean and fresh. Of the models we tested, we found the Maytag front load washer and Whirlpool top load washer to be the most similar in terms of price point, size and features. Each model also has a coordinating dryer in case you’re looking for a complete washer and dryer set. If you’re frequently washing heavily soiled clothing, bedding or doing laundry for a large family, stick with a Maytag. But if you prefer the convenience of smart features and want a more energy-efficient washer, then go for a Whirlpool.

Where to Buy Maytag Washers

Maytag washers can be purchased directly from the manufacturer or at a variety of retailers. In addition to your local appliance store, The Home Depot, Lowe’s and Best Buy all carry Maytag washing machines.

Where to Buy Whirlpool Washers

You can purchase a Whirlpool washer directly from Whirlpool or at a number of retailers. You are likely to find Whirlpool washers at your local appliance store as well as big box retailers like The Home Depot, Lowe’s and Best Buy.

Saatva vs. Avocado Mattress: Our Editors Tried Both for a Year, Here’s Our Verdict https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/saatva-vs-avocado-mattress/ Mon, 14 Oct 2024 17:46:21 +0000 Trying to decide between Saatva and Avocado mattresses? We’ve tested mattresses from both brands. Here’s how to decide which is better for you.

The post Saatva vs. Avocado Mattress: Our Editors Tried Both for a Year, Here’s Our Verdict appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Choosing the right mattressespecially when shopping onlinecan be a nightmare. There are countless retailers, all of which make bold claims about things like comfort, technology and luxury materials. With so many big-brand bedding companies claiming to be the best, how do you decide which mattress to go with? Dont fret; weve got you covered like a cozy comforter.

Ill give you the scoop on two big bedding brands: Saatva vs. Avocado. Then, Ill break down details and specs on a popular mattress pick from both brands, each of which has been individually tested by our shopping experts. Before writing this piece, I also chatted with Derek Hales, Founder and CEO of NapLab. Hales has tested over 390 mattresses and hundreds of other sleep products, and hes tested the two mattresses were discussing here: the Saatva Classic Mattress and the Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress.

The biggest difference between the Avocado Ultimate Organic and Saatva Classic is simply mattress type and material construction, Hales says. The Avocado is an organic, all-natural latex hybrid, and the Saatva is a more traditional coil style mattress. Below, we will get into all the details about each brand and mattress, and well let you know how sleeping on each mattress went for our shopping editors.

Saatva vs. Avocado: What’s the Difference?

Saatvas motto is premium quality without traditional retail markups. By cutting out the middleman, Saatva can offer direct-to-you pricing and luxury products at a much lower price than other luxury retailers. On the other hand, Avocado’s mission is to make healthy sleep accessible and affordable to all. Avocados luxury organic mattresses are made from non-toxic, natural and affordable materials.

When it comes to the brands most popular mattress models, the Saatva Classic versus Avocado Ultimate Organic, our shopping editors slept on each one for more than an entire year. Thats right: We tested each mattress for more than 365 nights. Heres what we learned.

All About the Saatva Classic Mattress

The Saatva Classic Mattress has a multi-layer coiled structure that starts with a pillow topper and high-density memory foam, then individually wrapped coils and a base coiled unit that allows for better airflow and a cooler nights sleep. The layers of responsive coils reduce potential sleep disruptions caused by movement, so if you share a bed, your tossing and turning wont disturb your partner.

As for materials, the Saatva Classic is free of fiberglass and chemical flame retardants. Plus, its made with an antimicrobial treatment to prevent the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria. The organic cotton cover is hypoallergenic, too.

The mattress is offered in eight sizes (twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, split king, California king and split California king) and has two height options: 11.5 and 14.5 inches. Additionally, there are three firmness levels to choose from: plush soft, luxury firm and firm.

Mattress without bed sheet

Our tester, Editor Madi Koetting, picked the luxury firm model for her Saatva mattress review, which falls in the middle regarding firmness. The luxury firm feel offers plush comfort and support, which is great if you struggle with back pain. It’s also the optimal option for combo sleepers (side, stomach, back) and a good option if you and your partner desire different firmness levels.

The dual-coil design will help disperse body heat if you’re a hot sleeper. Plus, the organic cotton cover is breathable, which helps keep you cool. Its also one-sided, so you wont have to worry about flipping the mattress every few months.

Complimentary white glove service is included with every purchase of a Saatva mattress. The company will send a delivery team to set up your bed and remove your old mattressfree of charge. Saatva also offers a 365-night home trial, so you can return a mattress if its not right for you. If you fall in love with it like Koetting did, you can expect it to last for years with a lifetime warranty guarding against any defects.

After one year of use, I can confidently say that switching from an ultra-plush memory foam bed to the Saatva luxury firm hybrid mattress was an excellent decision. I used to wake up with neck and lower back pain due to sinking into my previous mattress, but now I wake up refreshed thanks to my Saatva bed, Koetting says. I also appreciate that the mattress hasnt become super plush over time, and I rest easy knowing this investment bed will last me and my partner several years.

If hotel-level firmness isnt your thing, youre in luck, Koetting adds. This Saatva hybrid pick is also available in a plush soft firmness level and a firm level, which is even less plush than the luxury firm model. I highly recommend the plush soft option for sleepers who are unwilling to give up that luxurious ‘burrowing’ feeling.”

All About the Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress

Every Avocado mattress is handcrafted using 100% certified organic materials. Unlike conventional mattresses, organic mattresses are made with natural materials like wool, cotton and latex, which ensures theyre free of potentially toxic foams, chemical fire retardants and off-gassing materials.

The Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress has a medium-firm feel, what Avocado calls a gentle firm. A medium firmness level is great for anyone with back pain, stomach and side sleepers, and heavier individuals. The plush version of the mattress, which adds an extra two inches of support, is ideal for side sleepers because it provides additional pressure relief. Additionally, the innerspring layer is divided into five support zones to distribute weight evenly across the mattress, providing immediate pressure relief for the shoulders, back and hips.

Regarding temperature control, a two-inch, all-natural latex foam is a comfort layer, which most sleepers find cooler than memory foam. To add additional cooling effects, we recommend topping the mattress with a set of cooling sheets. Below the latex are individually wrapped coils to reduce motion transfer. The button-tufted top layer is crafted from soft organic cotton with moisture-wicking properties.

Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress

Editor Megan Wood used to review luxury hotel mattresses. She says, Ive tossed and turned on my fair share of expensive but sagging beds and woken up with an achy back. After testing the Avocado Green mattress for more than 365 nights, she says, Vacations aside, Ive slept on the Avocado Green mattress for an entire year, and Im thrilled to report that Im just as happy with it now as I was on the first night.

I used to sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees for better alignment. With the Avocado Green mattress, I ditched the pillow, Wood says. The mattress has held up to the addition of my boyfriend and his dog on most nights. I havent experienced any sagging, worn spots or discomfort. And I sleep better knowing my loved ones arent inhaling fire retardants through the night. Sleeping with a pillow between my knees is a distant memory.

My only change was to invest in a mattress protector to keep the Avocado clean and free from stains and spills, Wood adds. Ive recommended the Avocado to multiple friends who are also thrilled with the upgrade to better sleep with fewer chemicals.

According to the company website, whether youll need to use a box spring with your Saatva mattress depends on the base youre putting it on. If you have a platform bed, adjustable base or an existing mattress support system thats in good shape, you probably wont need to purchase a new box spring.

Are Avocado mattresses environmentally friendly?

Avocados long list of organic certifications includes Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program. The company has net-zero carbon emissions, making its mattresses ideal choices for eco-conscious shoppers.

Saatva vs. Avocado: The Bottom Line

Saatva Classic Mattress

I asked Derek Halesas someone who has tested both the Avocado and Saatva mattresses for himselfto pinpoint the primary differences. Heres the bottom line regarding Saatva versus Avocado: Avocado’s latex hybrid design gives it a more polarizing feel. Latex as a material type is highly durable, but it’s also springy, resilient, heavy and dense, and it creates a more generalized body contouring hug. This feeling is neither good nor bad, but it is specific, he says. To be comfortable on the Avocado matress, you’ll need to absolutely love the feel of latex.

The Saatva Classic is built from layers of coils and foam and designed to create a balanced and even feel that many different types of sleepers can enjoy, he says. It’s also available in three firmness levels, which means a wide range of people with different body types and sleeping positions will find it comfortable. In my view, Saatva Classic is a mattress made for mass appeal.

When asked about the performance between the two, Hales said the Saatva had better cooling, higher bounce, and significantly better pressure relief. The Avocados advantage is its slightly better material responsiveness (due to the latex top layers).

Where to Buy the Saatva Classic Mattress

The Saatva Classic Mattress can only be purchased through thecompanys website. A queen-sized mattress retails for $2,095, but the company frequently runs sales and deals.

Where to Buy the Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress

Avocado has a handful of stores in states like California, New York and Colorado. However, youll likely have to shop online, where you can compare mattresses, chat with customer support and more. A queen-sized, medium-firm Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress sells for $2,800.

If there’s one thing you should prioritize, it’s your sleep. After all, scientists estimate that we spend at least one-third of our lives sleeping. Purchasing a new mattress seems like the obvious solution if you’re looking to eliminate aches and pains or simply improve the overall quality of your sleep. However, a new mattress is a big investment. If that’s not in the budget right now, don’t worry. There are other, more cost-effective ways to ensure you sleep comfortably through the night. Investing in a new mattress topper is a great place to start.

The best mattress toppers actually extend the life of your mattress. Some toppers change the feel entirely while others drastically improve your sleep quality by providing pressure relief, alleviating back pain or regulating your body temperature. And much like a mattress protector, they prevent spills, sweat and other stains from making it into the mattress itself. We tested nine mattress toppers, specifically looking for those that are best for side sleepers. The Dormeo Mattress Topper was our top Amazon pick. Here’s everything you need to know before adding it to your cart.

What is the Dormeo Mattress Topper?

The Dormeo Mattress Topper is a memory foam topper with medium firmness. It features innovative Octaspring technology to facilitate a cooler and more supportive sleep surface. What really sets the Dormeo mattress topper apart from other models is its three-zone support. Firmer Octasprings cradle your hips and back in the middle of the topper while softer Octasprings make up the zones around your shoulders and legs.

The Dormeo mattress topper has a non-slip bottom and adjustable corner straps to keep it in place.

How We Tested It

Delivery and Setup

As someone who struggles with back pain, our tester, Leah Groth, was happy to try the Dormeo Mattress Topper on her Purple mattress. The topper arrived in a single box that Groth was able to bring inside and up a flight of stairs on her own. The topper itself, which Groth estimates to be around 30 pounds, was folded and wrapped in plastic. The heavy weight of this topper made it difficult to maneuver once it was unwrapped. “Carrying and setup was a one-person job. It was very easy to get up the stairs without struggling,” she says. “Once opened, however, it is harder to maneuver than the others [that I’ve tried]. It is heavier and less flexible.”

Once Groth managed to position the topper on her bed, she appreciated the fact that it didn’t need time to inflate or off-gas. The only thing she didn’t like about the Dormeo mattress topper was its size. According to Groth, there was quite a bit of overhang when placed on the mattress. Fortunately, the overhang didn’t affect the overall comfort or support of the topper and it stayed on well thanks to the adjustable corner straps.

Sleep Testing

Dormeo Premium Mattress Topper

After sleeping on the Dormeo mattress topper for five nights, Groth noticed an improvement in her back. “Because the topper is so firm, it prevents my back from sinking into the bed,” she explains. “However, it provides support at pressure points. I definitely noticed that my back was less achy and my neck didn’t feel so strained after sleeping on it for a few nights.” She also found the topper to be cooling and breathable with a high-quality feel.

Groth loved how supported she felt while sleeping on the Dormeo mattress topper. However, she notes that there is some room for improvement. Though the topper is advertised as having a medium-firm feel, Groth found it to be a bit too firm for her liking.

“It was a little too firm for me and I didn’t love the Octaspring technology, which is supposed to provide targeted pressure point relief,” explains Groth. “I prefer a softer mattress, especially for side sleeping, as I tend to shift positions in the night. While it did offer pressure point relief for side sleeping, I didn’t feel super comfortable.”

Dormeo Premium Mattress Topper

Additionally, Groth would have preferred a smoother cover. She could feel the hexagon impressions through her sheets.

Overall, Groth recommends the Dormeo mattress topper to anyone who likes the feel of a firm sleep surface. “It is definitely well-made with high quality materials,” she says. “And it’s thick.” We recommend pairing it with a medium-firm mattress like the Cocoon Chill or luxurious Saatva Classic Mattress.

Pros

  • Three-zone support distributes weight evenly
  • Targeted pressure point relief
  • Machine-washable cover
  • Adjustable corner straps
  • Available in seven sizes
  • Arrives quickly via Prime shipping

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Hexagon grid can be felt through linens

Why You Should Trust Us

AtFamily Handyman, our team of editors and testers are always excited to try new products. We especially love testing products that enhance the quality of our sleep. We sent this mattress topper to long-term tester Leah Groth.

Groth put this topper on her own mattress and slept on it for five nights. During that time, she focused on its overall comfort and performance, paying special attention to how well it alleviated her back and neck aches. She also considered how easy it was to unpack and place on the bed, whether or not it had any odors and its overall value. “It is good quality, thick, and seems like it would last a long time,” raves Groth. “It may even get more comfortable over time. And the waterproof cover keeps it super protected.”

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Dormeo mattress topper has over 1,940 five-star reviews on Amazon with customers raving about its overall comfort and ability to alleviate back pain. Here’s what they had to say.

One Amazon customer insists that the Dormeo mattress topper completely changed the feel of their 9-year-old Tempur-Pedic mattress. “It has definitely improved the quality of my sleep and has improved the comfort of my 9-year-old Tempur-Pedic hybrid mattress,” they write. “I’ve slept on this topper for 2 weeks now and I absolutely love it! I’m a side sleeper and this cushions my hips. I sleep soundly without waking up with hip pain. Very happy and definitely recommend it.”

Happy in the Sunshine, another five-star reviewer, couldn’t be happier that they purchased this mattress topper in spite of it being a lesser-known brand.

“I bought this topper because of my back pain and because I sleep hot. Bam! This made all the difference. Pain is better and the bed doesn’t overheat like it does with regular memory foam,” raves Happy. “This brand never gets mentioned when you search the internet for best toppers. But guess what? It was rated number one by Consumer’s Union so I bought it. I’m glad I did.”

And five-star reviewer Ms. Gloria D is sleeping better than ever thanks to this topper.

“This mattress topper definitely supports the body, and I do sleep well now,” she writes. “It has helped with my sensitive pressure points and Im pleased with the thickness and appearance. Definitely cooler than the foam gel one that I tossed out.”

Dormeo Mattress Topper vs. Dreamsmith Memory Foam Mattress Topper

A search for memory foam mattress toppers on Amazon will yield thousands of results so finding the best one can feel like an impossible feat. We tested two highly rated memory foam mattress toppers from Amazon: the Dormeo mattress topper and the Dreamsmith mattress topper. Both mattress toppers are made of supportive memory foam and have adjustable straps to keep them securely in place. Moreover, they both have removable covers that can be tossed in the washing machine.

Starting at $282, the Dormeo mattress topper is slightly more than double the price of the Dreamsmith. The Dormeo offers three-zone support and has Octaspring technology which allows air to circulate, making this topper breathable and cooling.

The Dreamsmith comes in five sizes, three thickness levels and starts at $120. It is supportive and comfortable, but keep in mind that this mattress topper will need time to expand after being positioned on your bed.

Final Verdict

If youre looking for a way to spruce up your old mattress, then the Dormeo mattress topper is an excellent choice. This temperature regulating mattress topper offers targeted pressure point relief and all-over support so you’ll wake up well-rested.

Where to Buy the Dormeo Mattress Topper

The Dormeo Mattress Topper is available on Amazon. It’s available in seven sizes and starts at $282. Best of all, it’s eligible for Prime two-day shipping which means you’ll be on your way to better sleep in no time.

Flood vs. Homeowner’s Insurance: Know the Difference Before Disaster Strikes https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/flood-vs-homeowners-insurance/ Fri, 11 Oct 2024 19:31:23 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=640512 If you didn't specifically ask for flood insurance, chances are you're not covered. Here's how to decide if you need it.

The post Flood vs. Homeowner’s Insurance: Know the Difference Before Disaster Strikes appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
When I lived in Florida, I opted for an upgraded hurricane insurance rider on my policy. But after our home sustained a direct hit from Hurricane Irma, I discovered that my coverage did not actually include flooding, just damage from wind.

Such confusion about home insurance vs. flood insurance is alarmingly common, says Sebastian Hov, CEO of 18 Insurance. FEMA estimates only 4% of US homeowners have flood insurance, even though 99 percent of US counties have been impacted by flooding since 1996. That stat is even more saddening for those areas outside of Florida that were hit by Hurricane Helen, where only 1 percent of homeowners who sustained flooding had flood insurance.

“This lack of coverage is usually due to a false sense of security among homeowners who aren’t in designated high-risk zones,” says Hov.

If you’re unsure about the difference between home insurance vs. flood insurance, and whether you need the extra coverage, here’s what to know and how to decide.

What’s the Difference Between Flood Insurance and Homeowner’s Insurance?

The main difference between home insurance vs. flood insurance is that while homeowners’ policies typically cover a broad range of events from fires to theft, they specifically do not cover flood damage. Instead, flood insurance must be purchased separately, as a standalone policy or as an endorsement to your existing policy.

Flood Insurance Coverage

Most flood insurance coverage includes damage from flooding caused by:

  • Heavy rain
  • Melting snow
  • Overflow of inland or tidal waters
  • Mudslides or mudflows caused by flooding
  • Collapse of land along the lakeshore
  • Any other unusual accumulation of runoff or surface waters

The types of damage to your home that flood insurance typically covers include:

  • Structural damage to the building and its foundation
  • Electrical and plumbing systems
  • Refrigerators and built-in appliances
  • Personal property (if contents coverage is included)

Homeowner Insurance Coverage

Most homeowners’ insurance coverage includes:

  • Burst pipes, leaky roofs and appliance overflows
  • Fire damage
  • Theft
  • Wind damage
  • Ice damming damage
  • Water backup/sump pump failure (usually optional)

However, “There are many levels of coverage for homeowner insurance depending on what you purchase and or qualify for due to the condition of your home,” says Colleen Parsons, an independent insurance broker with World Insurance. So, make sure to check with your agent about coverage specifics.

Do I Need Flood Insurance?

You definitely need flood insurance if your mortgage company requires it. If you don’t have a mortgage but live in an area considered high-risk for flooding, it’s also a wise choice to get it.

“However, it’s becoming increasingly important for all homeowners due to climate change and increasing development in flood zones,” says Hov.

So even if you don’t live in a flood zone, you might consider getting flood insurance, especially as floods that were once considered 100- or thousand-year events are now getting more common.

To check if you’re in a high-risk zone, check with your local town or city hall, which will have access to a flood map, ask your insurance agent or see FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center. Zones starting with A and V are considered high-risk. Zones starting with B, C and X are low to moderate risk.

“Everyone is technically in a flood zone. However, the flood map will determine if you are at a higher risk for it,” says Parsons. “For example, Zones A or AE are at the highest risk of a flood, meaning those areas have a 1% annual chance of flooding and 26 percent chance over a 30-year mortgage.”

How Much Does Flood Insurance Cost?

It varies widely, from around $500 to more than $5,000 a year, depending on where you live, your flood risk, how much insurance you need and whether you get it through a private operator vs. the National Flood Insurance Program NFIP).

Based on the 2024 National Flood Insurance Program rates, the average cost in the US is $819 per year. However, says Hov, recent changes to the NFIP’s pricing model may lead to significant rate increases for some policyholders.

If you live in a high-risk area, you may be able to obtain an elevation certificate to help lower the cost, says Parsons. This is a somewhat lengthy process that will likely require a land or engineer survey. She suggests first checking with your insurance company to confirm whether this is a viable option.

For renters, flood insurance can be much cheaper, with rates as low as $99 a year for contents-only coverage, says Hov.

Essential Tips For Wiring An Unfinished Garage https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/garage-electrical-wiring/ Fri, 11 Oct 2024 17:59:36 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=638849 Frustrated by substandard power and lighting in your unfinished garage? Update it!

The post Essential Tips For Wiring An Unfinished Garage appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
How are you feeling about your unfinished garage? Is it well-lit? Does it have enough receptacles to plug in your tools and gadgets? Are you relying on extension cords to reach the far corners? I had an unfinished, detached garage that was built when Model T cars were the latest innovation. So, even though I’m a licensed electrician, I never bothered updating it. But I could have, and you can, too and it might just be a big upgrade to your quality of life.

Garage wiring requirements get updated periodically, and different jurisdictions follow different code cycles. Check with your city permitting office to see what code cycle they enforce. The below requirements are based on the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC), but they’re not exhaustive. If you have any questions or aren’t comfortable working with electricity, call in a pro.

Do I Need a Permit to Wire My Garage?

You might verify with your city’s electrical inspector. My jurisdiction allows me to install up to six receptacles and/or one new circuit on my own home without getting a permit, but your city likely has different rules. Many places require licensed electrical contractors to obtain the permit, even if it’s okay for the homeowner to do the work. Remember that if you do need a permit, you’ll also need an inspection when the work is done.

Garage Wiring Basics

Garage wiring requirements change fairly often because our needs are constantly evolving. Tools, electric vehicle (EV) charging and other garage accessories get bigger and more powerful every year. Here are the 2023 NEC basics, and also some general wiring tips.

Branch circuit requirements

All attached garages and detached, powered garages need one 20-amp circuit that feeds receptacles. If you have a single-car garage, you can also power the lights, but for garages with more than one “vehicle bay,” this 20-amp circuit is for receptacles only you can’t supply the lighting or anything else. It’s perfectly fine to add additional circuits, though, as long as they are 15 amps or greater.

Houses built as recently as 10 years ago might only have a 15-amp garage circuit (the 20-amp requirement was added in 2017). But if you use shop tools or have a portable EV charger, you probably know why the NEC upped the circuit amperage: They draw a lot of power. If everything in your garage is on a 15-amp circuit, and you fire up the table saw or plug in a 16-amp EV charger, the breaker’s going to trip.

Speaking of EVs, any charger over 16 amps must be on an individual branch circuit, meaning the circuit is dedicated to that use only.

Receptacle requirements

The NEC requires one receptacle for each vehicle bay, and they can’t be higher than 5 1/2 feet off the floor. These receptacles must be powered by the 20-amp circuit. You can have more receptacles on this circuit or add additional circuits for other receptacles, but the vehicle bay ones must be on the 20-amp. It’s also acceptable to add outdoor receptacles to your garage circuits (the 20-amp one or any additional circuit you add).

Every receptacle in the garage and outside must be protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI), which can be breakers or receptacles. Keep in mind that GFCIs must be installed in readily accessible locations, so don’t put a GFCI receptacle on the ceiling by your garage door opener or behind the fridge. Use other receptacles to protect these inaccessible ones, or use a breaker.

Lighting requirements

The inside of your garage (attached or detached and powered) must have a lighting outlet that’s controlled by a listed wall switch or controller. This light cannot be fed by the 20-amp garage receptacle circuit unless you have a single-car garage. You also need a lighting outlet outside any exterior door that’s accessible from grade level. It’s a good idea to use three-way switching to control the interior light so you can turn it on and off from either door, but it’s not required. The exterior light can be controlled by a switch, remote, central or automatic means.

One thing to consider: If you put lights and receptacles together, and something trips the GFCI, you will be left in the dark until you can reset the tripped breaker or receptacle. For this reason, many electricians run lights separately from other branch circuits.

Protect Your Wiring

The NEC requires that exposed non-metallic sheathed cable (NM-B), aka Romex, be protected from physical damage, and unfinished garages are full of things that could snag your wire and cause a fire or shock incident. People often ask if they can run cables vertically alongside and horizontally through the studs in a garage. The answer? Yes, but you have to follow some rules.

  • Maintain 1-1/4 inch depth. Keep cable at least 1-1/4 inches from any edge of wood studs, joists or rafters, and never staple it to the face of framing members, where it could get hung up on something you’re carrying.
  • Use nail plates. If you can’t maintain a 1-1/4 inch depth when you bore holes through the studs, use nail plates. These protective metal plates attach to the front of the stud to prevent a nail or screw from being driven into the cable. If you have metal studs with pre-punched holes, add bushings when bringing NM-B cable through.
  • Use care with finished walls. If you have a garage wall that’s concrete block or already finished with drywall, consider using conduit or metallic sheathed cable instead of NM-B if the run will be within reach of people or tools. The NEC requires you protect NM-B from physical damage “where necessary,” which can sometimes be a judgment call.
  • Support your cables. NM-B must be secured every 4-1/2 feet, and can’t be draped over joists or other things in your ceiling without proper support. Running cable horizontally through studs is considered support.
  • Secure cables at boxes. Secure NM-B cable within 12 inches of boxes unless you have a single gang, non-metallic box without integrated clamps that’s no more than 2-1/2 inches by 4 inches in size. (In that case, secure the cable within 8 inches of the box).

FAQ

Does the garage door opener need a dedicated circuit?

No. The 2023 NEC allows all receptacles in the garage to be fed from the 20-amp circuit, including one on the ceiling for the garage door opener. You can also add it to any additional circuits. But, if the listing or labeling requires you to use an individual branch circuit, the NEC says you must follow the listing.

The post DreamCloud Mattress Review: We Tried It for a Year, and Here’s What Happened appeared first on Family Handyman.

Being a hot sleeper is just one of several annoying symptoms that our product tester Jill Schildhouse endures due to hypothyroidism. For many, an underactive (or overactive) thyroid gland can result in difficulty regulating body temperature. If you cant seem to keep your cool during the night, no matter how low youve cranked the thermostat, a DreamCloud mattress might be just what you need.

Last year, Schildhouse ditched her eight-year-old mattress to upgrade to the DreamCloud Premier Rest. After an entire year of testing, she tells us that the mattress has made a noticeable difference in her ability to get a good nights restespecially as a hot sleeper.

Below, well break down all the need-to-know deets about the DreamCloud mattress and report on Jills findings after testing it. If youre someone who wakes up in the middle of the night doused in sweat, trying to rip the blankets and sheets of your bed to gain some relief, a cooling mattress may just be the bedding upgrade youve been waiting for.

What is a DreamCloud Mattress?

TheDreamCloudis an affordable hybrid mattress in a box, which means its composed of memory foam and supportive coils. Plus, its delivered in a box, so its easy to move and get inside.

There are three DreamCloud mattress options to choose from: The base-model DreamCloud Mattress, which is the most popular option with a 12-inch profile; the upgraded, eight-layer DreamCloud Premier with a 13-inch profile and a little more support; and the premium-level, eight-layer DreamCloud Premier Rest with a 14-inch profile.

The multiple layers of hybrid comfort include a breathable cashmere blend cover, contouring quilted gel memory foam, supportive quilted foam, therapeutic gel-infused memory foam, dynamic transition layer, individually wrapped coils with edge support, a stability base layer and a shift-resistant cover with handles.

DreamCloud Mattress Product Features

As described, theDreamCloud Mattressboasts eight luxurious layers that provide soft, contouring support via memory foam and pressure-relief comfort thanks to its individually wrapped innerspring coils.

Most importantly for our product tester, the mattresss gel memory foam and coil system work together to reduce heat retention, disperse body heat and promote better airflow, reducing the risk of overheating. Additionally, the cashmere blend cover is moisture-wicking and breathable, dispelling heat for a cooler sleep.

Along with providing relief from the heat, users say DreamCloud mattresses are also great for back pain. The transitional layer provides lumbar support and promotes spinal alignment, while the edge support around the coils makes it easier to get in and out of bed if youre someone who typically experiences stiffness upon waking up.

How We Tested It

A small black and white dog lies on a white mattress with a yellow label reading "DREAMCLOUD" in large letters. The plush, quilted surface of the mattress is visible, along with an elegant lamp in the background.

For an entire year, Schildhouse rated the quality of sleep she got on the DreamCloud Premier Rest. She carefully considered four categories: comfort, support and pain relief, heat retention and motion transfer.

Schildhouse typically sleeps on her side (and sometimes her stomach), while her partner is mostly a back sleeper, so they had just about every sleeping position covered between the two of them. Theyre also in their mid-40s and starting to experience some aches and pains in the mornings.

Additionally, as mentioned, Schildhouse frequently overheats during the night. She also tosses and turns a lot. So, she wanted to know if the DreamCloud Mattress could do it all. Would it be comfortable for her and her partner? Would it alleviate aches and pains? Could it keep her cool and reduce motion transfer?

The king-sized mattress arrived in a small box at her door. Once I opened it up, the DreamCloud mattress magically unfolded into an impressively thick and shockingly heavy plush mattress, she says. I was a bit worried about off-gassing, an unpleasant experience I remember from purchasing our previous mattress. Thankfully, that was not the case with the DreamCloud Premier Rest, as the slight chemical odor dissipated within 24 hours.

After the mattress was opened and set up (Schildhouse called on two other people to help her place the heavy mattress on her bed), it was time to begin the 365-day test period.

The firmness of the mattress is a 6-1/2 on a scale from 1 to 10, she says. For the first few days, we were acutely aware of how much firmer the DreamCloud felt than our previous mattress. But by week two, we were fully on board with how supportive it was. A year later, it still feels dreamy and cloud-like, contouring to the shape of our bodies.

Each night, when I got into bed, I noticed how much cooler the sheets felt against my skin and absolutely loved the sensation, Schildhouse adds. Even though I still felt warm some nights, I no longer woke up overheated and drenched in sweat.

While unsure if the motion-transfer support layer actually working or she was just moving less because she wasnt hot and uncomfortable, Schildhouse says she had fewer restless nights on the DreamCloud Mattress. Furthermore, she didnt wake or disturb her partner with middle-of-the-night tossing and turning. The mattress proved to meet its claims in terms of performance and comfort.

FAQ

Is DreamCloud Mattress firm or soft?

Its medium firm. Our tester, Jill Schildhouse, found the mattress to be pretty firm but also to provide the support she needed.

How long do DreamCloud Mattresses last?

Due to its hybrid construction, a DreamCloud Mattress should last you around eight years, depending on how well its taken care of. Hybrid mattresses also tend to be more responsive and better at temperature regulation.

Are Nectar and DreamCloud the same company?

If you like Nectar mattresses, youll be pleased to know that Nectar and DreamCloud are actually sister brands.

Is DreamCloud a good mattress?

Every house has numbers so people and the post can find you. Have you noticed how many people DON’T give their house numbers a DIY creative consideration? Most are satisfied with the numbers the house had from the minute they walked in. For this project, I pondered how a set of numbers on the front of your home can set the stage for what lies beyond the door. From a technical perspective, I designed this project so all of you can say, I can do that! Still, from a design perspective, I want the modern house numbers to boost the curb appeal and speak to the people walking up the door for the first time with a “wow,” all while giving it a cool, modern vibe.

Where To Put House Numbers

Your house number should be displayed at eye level or higher in a location where they are easily visible from the road and free of obstructions, such as tree branches. It is recommended that you use contrasting colors or place them near a well-lit area so they are easily visible in low light conditions. Use bigger numbers the further away your home is from the road.

Set the stained pieces aside and allow them to dry while you proceed to the next step. Touch up any exposed ends after the number panel is put together and framed.

To avoid staining the natural-colored wood pieces (A, B, and C) with your fingerprints while you put the piece together, you MUST ensure the dark wood stain is dry before you start to handle it. Also, using oil-based stain will give your wood even more longevity when exposed to the elements.

Organizing your kitchen, living room, and other interior areas of your home can feel like they are of the utmost importanceand they are. Still, many people often neglect their garage space, which shelters cars and regularly catches overflow of household items (I’m guilty of flinging things into my garage). Installing a garage storage system can make more space for parked cars and give you more room in your home. Shelving and cabinet systems in the garage can hold power tools, extra household supplies, holiday decorations and more.

But it’s no secret that garage storage systems can be pricey. Plus, with so many options on the market, it can be hard to know which systems to spend your money on. Luckily, our editors recently tested the best garage storage systems in their very own homes, and we landed on a favorite: theGladiator Flex Cabinet system.

What is the Gladiator Flex Cabinet System?

Gladiator Flex Cabinet System Iv

The Gladiator Flex cabinet system is a multipurpose, adjustable storage solution made of welded steel. The system holds an impressive 2,350 pounds of weight and includes seven fully adjustable shelves that fit within the cabinets. The cabinet structure is 30 inches tall and includes two wall cabinets and two base cabinets, all 24 inches.

The Gladiator brand is aptly named for a reasonthis garage storage solution is made to be extremely durable with its welded steel construction. It can withstand dings, dents and scrapes from garden tools and more.

The fully adjustable shelves have a sleek, modern design with recessed handles and soft-close doors. You can keep items safe by locking them up with the systems two-point locking mechanism on all wall and base cabinets and the three-point locking mechanism on all tall cabinets. There are even cable management holes with a protective grommet to keep wires from getting damaged so you can keep your garage workspace neat and tidy.

  • Adjustable shelves
  • Soft-close doors
  • Entire system holds up to 2,350 pounds
  • Integrated cable management holes to prevent wires from getting damaged
  • Additonal accessories and add ons available
  • Lifetime limited warranty

  • Wall mount hardware not included
  • No wheels or workspace
  • Assembly required

Product Features

Soft-Close Doors and Recessed Handles

Gladiator Flex Cabinet System Iv

You might think of soft-close doors and recessed handles as luxury features youd find in an indoor closet systemand you wouldnt be wrong. But this system brings those sought-after indoor features out to the garage. All cabinets have soft-close doors for quiet opening and closing and recessed handles that look streamlined and wont stick out to snag tools or scratch cars.

Heavy-DutyHolding

The Flex Cabinet System IV can hold up to 2,350 pounds of weight when items are distributed evenly throughout the system. That means this system can hold your heaviest tools and machine-powered lawn equipment. If youre not using it for tool storage, thats an ultra-heavy capacity for household items you need to store in the garage.

24-Gauge Steel

The systems welded steel construction makes it exceptionally strong and durable. It is made to last for years and withstand any elements that may otherwise cause warping and bending. The Gladiator system we began testing almost a year ago still looks and feels as good as new. Plus, its durable powder coat finish offers corrosion resistance.

Locking System

Gladiator Flex Cabinet System Iv

All cabinets and doors on the system have locks, and the unit has a set of keys. Once locked, the doors arent easily pried open. Each door has either a two or three-point locking system, so theres more than one lever on each door that keeps it in place when locked. If you need to lock away potentially dangerous equipment or sharp tools, you can do so without worry.

How We Tested It

A year ago, I began testing theGladiator Flex cabinet system. Actually, I gifted the Gladiator Flex cabinet system to my mother because I did not have my own garage at the time. (Flash forward to a year later, and I wish I had the Gladiator Flex for myself!) However, my mom is a handywoman in her own right and desperately needed a storage system to hold lawn and garden equipment, power tools, paint and supplies.

When I asked if shed help me test the system a year ago, I did not anticipate it being one of her favorite gifts from me. The system arrived via delivery personnel; while they did not assist with assembly or installation, they did hand deliver the system to her garage. Note: If you order the garage storage system from Wayfair, you can add professional assembly service for an additional cost.

Gladiator Flex Cabinet System Iv

We installed the system ourselves, which wasnt difficult. The frame of the unit was already built, so assembly (if you can call it that) was as easy as installing the shelves and hanging rack and making sure various screws were tightened. The unit arrived in great condition, with no flaws or imperfections. The most difficult part of the installation was mounting the unit to the wall. The unit should come with a mounting kit. The most difficult part about mounting the unit was ensuring it was level and secure, but once thats done, it is ready to use.

Gladiator Flex Cabinet System Iv

After we mounted the unit using the wall-mounting bracket, we loaded it with supplies that needed storage. Immediately, we were impressed by how much the unit can hold, and we were both wowed by the locking system, which is great for keeping items safe and out of reach in homes with young children. Stowing away nail guns, hand saws, and other potentially dangerous tools can be done worry-free with this unit. Youll just want to remember where you keep the key!

My mother loves the sleek, modern design of the metal cabinets with its powder-coat finish and recessed handles. She also loves that the doors on the cabinets stay quiet while opening and closing. Thanks to the soft-close doors, you dont have to worry about waking anyone up or having the dogs bark while tinkering around in your garage late at night.

Gladiator Flex Cabinet System Iv

In addition to the convenient locking feature, we love that the Gladiator brand offers a wide range of garage storage products. For a customizable feel, you can shopcompatible gear tracks, other matching accessories and storage units with wheels, drawers and built-in workspaces from the brand.

Why You Should Trust Us

Family Handyman Shopping Editor Mary Henn goes the extra mile when it comes to reviewing products. When recommending a product to the consumer, she wants to test it in her own home firstwhether drilling into the wall, digging into the yard or unloading heavy appliances. When writing this piece, she didnt have her own garage to use for testing, so she called on the help of family members. She was present to deliver, install, and use the system. She also checked in monthly to report any new findings or issues with the garage storage system. That way, you can make consumer-informed decisions based on real-life testing before you buy.

With many five-star reviews, buyers note the outstanding quality of the system, ease of setup and durability. Additionally, reviewers note that because of the quality of the product, the doors dont require manipulation to lock them. While we didnt test the workbench ourselves, many other buyers say they love the addition of the Gladiator workbench, which fits perfectly on top of the two smaller cabinets.

Smeg Refrigerator Review: Is This Vintage-Inspired Appliance More Than Just a Pretty Face? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/smeg-refrigerator-review/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 18:10:35 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=634569 Is a Smeg refrigerator the coolest (hehe, get it?) choice for you? Find out what I really think after two months of testing.

The post Smeg Refrigerator Review: Is This Vintage-Inspired Appliance More Than Just a Pretty Face? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
You’ve heard it before: They just don’t make things like they used to.

The 1950s and 60s certainly weren’t perfect decades, but one good thing about those years were their well-made appliances. Not only were the appliances of the ’50s built with quality and durability in mind, but they were often outfitted in various pastel shades (think pistachio green or a paler version of Pepto-Bismol) and featured classic (now-)retro designs.

Although you probably could procure an archaic pastel fridge from yesteryear, you might be better off choosing a modern option with better energy efficiency (but the same retro feel) from Smeg.

Naturally, when I had a chance to try the Smeg refrigerator (the Retro Fab 28 if we’re feeling technical), I jumped at the chance. After testing it for a full two months in my home, I have the verdict on whether or not you should invest in a Smeg fridge of your own.

What is a Smeg Fab 28 Fridge?

Although the brand Smeg was founded in 1948, the Fab line of fridges was not introduced to the public until 1997 (great year to be born; I would know). Smeg’s design team called on inspiration from the appliances of the 1950s when creating this would-be style icon. You’ll recognize a Fab fridge from its notable rectangular shape, glossy finish and stand-out handle. The aluminum handle is sturdy and made of the same material as the ‘Smeg’ lettering on the fridge.

The brand offers various sizes, configurations, and colors of Fab fridges. Opt for a mini fridge (the Fab 10) if you’re looking for game room beverage storage, or choose the big Kahuna (the Fab 50) for ample fridge and freezer space. Smeg also offers the Fab 32 (a tall, skinny fridge/freezer combo), the Fab 38 (a slightly taller and larger fridge/freezer combo), the Fab 5 (an extra small mini fridge), and of course, the Fab 28 (which is the option I selected).

Smeg Fridge Features

The Smeg Fab 28 has a variety of notable features, including:

  • Multi-flow cooling system
  • Electronic temperature control
  • 0C compartment
  • Anti-ice back panel
  • LED lights
  • Various food and drink storage

How We Tested It

I chose to order my Smeg fridge from Williams-Sonoma, although they’re not the only retailer that carries the Fab 28. Just as an FYI, this fridge is not currently available at more traditional appliance retailers like Lowe’s or The Home Depot. With this in mind, don’t expect whoever you order your Smeg from to take your old fridge during the delivery process. I ended up listing my old fridge on Facebook Marketplace, which might be your best bet if your old fridge still works.

Delivery

Smeg Fab 28 Fridge under the kitchen cabinet.

Now, back to my experience. After selecting my perfect Fab 28 fridge (left hinge, pastel blue, of course), I checked out. Williams-Sonoma offers free white glove delivery, which was a relief to me because I live on the second floor in a walk-up building.

After about a month of waiting, the new fridge arrived at my door. But that wasn’t without the help of two delivery men (who told me they almost never deliver fridges) who had to haul this 165-pound appliance up a set of carpeted stairs and successfully not hit the precariously hung light fixture that the HOA refuses to switch out.

The Fab 28 easily slid into the spot underneath my cabinet where my previous Samsung fridge had sat, albeit it juts out a few inches further than its predecessor and is a few inches shorter. It also has adjustable feet (as most fridges have), so you can make your Fab 28 level.

Assembly and Set Up

Man can be seen setting up the Smeg Fab 28 Fridge

After successfully plugging in my fridge, I got to work unwrapping each carefully packaged shelf and bin, which were conveniently stored inside the appliance. The Fab 28 comes with a variety of glass shelves (three adjustable, one fixed) inside and multiple bins in the door for additional storage. There’s also a produce and dairy box in this fridge.

The assembly process (if you can even call it that) took all of 5 minutes after I unwrapped everything. You just have to slide the shelves and bins into their rightful spots.

To get the fridge cold, I simply turned the dial located inside the fridge to a number between one and five, with five being the coldest. By the next morning, everything in the fridge was perfectly chilled, and the small freezer had frozen my ice roller (as it should).

Using the Fridge

Interior of Smeg Fab 28 Fridge

I loaded up my new Smeg Fab 28 fridge with all the beverages (I’m a beverage goblin) and snacks. Everything was going swimmingly until I tried to put my Brita water pitcher inside the fridge. Even after messing with the adjustable shelves, I found that the pitcher was still too tall to slide in properly.

However, I did maneuver it into a strange sideways position, and the door closed, so I called that a win. But be warned: taller bottles and pitchers may not fit in the Fab 28, which is a bit of a bummer. Luckily, almost all the wine bottles I tried to shove in the Fab 28 fit into one of the door’s bins (minus one very lengthy Sav Blanc from my wine of the month club).

The Fab 28 is on the smaller side, so I’d recommend it for folks who live alone or with a partner. If you have a large family or multiple people in one home, you might do better with the Smeg Fab 50 fridge, which is quite a bit larger.

Although the Fab 28 does have a little freezer space, it does not make ice. This isn’t a problem for me, as I already own a nugget ice maker, but it might be for others who count on their freezer to spit out ice. Additionally, there is no water dispenser on this fridge, which, again, is no issue for me because I didn’t have one on my last fridge.

Energy Efficiency

One of the main concerns for appliances these days is energy efficiency. If you have energy-efficient appliances, you use less energy (sorry, was that obvious?), which will result in a lower energy bill. And unless you’re Elon Musk, you probably care about saving a buck or two where you can.

Luckily, the Fab 28 is considered energy efficient and has a previous rating of A+++, which is now a D (of the same level as before; they just changed the classifications). According to the Smeg website, the Fab 28 will use “230 KWh per year” of energy. For context, the average fridge uses between “300-800 KWh of energy per year,” per BKV Energy.

Pros

  • Retro aesthetic
  • Available in 15 colorways
  • Right and left hinge options
  • Becomes cold quickly upon setup
  • Ideal for smaller spaces/kitchens
  • Made in Italy
  • Glass shelves are adjustable
  • LED lights are illuminating
  • Energy efficient

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Freezer doesn’t always latch the first time you close it
  • Some Brita pitchers don’t fit inside
  • Small freezer space

Why You Should Trust Us

I’m the Senior Shopping Editor for Family Handyman, and I’ve spent the last four years testing and reviewing interesting products for readers. I know how to evaluate a product holistically to determine who it might be a good fit for (and who might do better with something else). And this Smeg fridge is no different.

I tested this fridge for almost two months before giving it my seal of approval. Examining everything from delivery to energy efficiency (and everything in between) was a critical step in my evaluation process.

FAQ

Hand can be seen opening the Smeg Fab 28 Fridge

What is the energy rating of Smeg Fab 28?

The Smeg Fab 28 previously had an energy rating of A+++, which has now been changed to a D rating. Not to worry; this is simply a reclassification and doesn’t mean the Smeg fridge has decreased in energy efficiency. The Fab 28 still only uses around 230 KWh of energy per year.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

Curious what other Smeg Fab 28 owners had to say? Check out a few other reviews below.

“This fridge is exactly what I was hoping for,” reviewer Krista raves in their five-star review. “Good size without being too big or too small. I purchased [it as] a beer fridge and [for] occasional overflow from the main fridge. So far, its awesome.”

“The cream Smeg fridge is worth every penny,” a reviewer on AO.com explains. “Extremely high quality finish with excellent storage options. Very easy to set up and useful adjustable feet for slightly uneven flooring. The two drawers for storing meat and larger one for vegetables is superbly designed for optimum use of the space. The fridge is very quiet with a useful warning beep if the fridge is left open for too long. The shelves and boxes feel sturdy and strong. Having had a Smeg fridge previously for over 20 years the new updated design does not disappoint and surpasses expectation.”

Smeg Fridge vs Samsung Fridge

Luckily for you, dear reader (I think I’ve been watching too much Bridgerton lately), I’ve owned both a Samsung fridge and a Smeg fridge and can confidently tell you the difference between them. More specifically, I’ll be comparing the Smeg Fab 28 and the Samsung top freezer/refrigerator combo, as they are the ones I have experience with (and the ones that are around the same size).

The Smeg Fab 28 fridge is definitely the pricier of the two, retailing for around $2,500. By contrast, the comparable Samsung option costs under $850. If you’re someone who is obsessed with a more retro look and doesn’t mind shelling out the cash for aesthetic purposes, then choosing the Smeg Fab 28 makes sense. But if you like a stainless steel finish plus a larger freezer space and don’t want to spend $2,500, go for the Samsung.

Energy efficiency is also a consideration. The Smeg Fab 28 uses only around 230 kWh annually, and the Samsung uses 345 kWh per year. Both are energy-efficient options, but the Smeg uses slightly less energy.

Naturepedic Mattress Review: We Tested this Customizable Non-Toxic Bed https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/naturepedic-mattress-review/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 15:30:58 +0000 This Naturepedic mattress is certified non-toxic and organic by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Each side has customizable firmness.

The post Naturepedic Mattress Review: We Tested this Customizable Non-Toxic Bed appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If I had $1 for every time I thought about how my husband and I needed a new mattress, Id buy an island. Our Beautyrest mattress had seen better days, and its once firm edges were dipped and didnt offer the same support it did years ago. I wasnt sure what firmness level Ior my husband, for that matterwould prefer, so I felt comfortable testing out the customizable Naturepedic mattress.

This non-toxic mattress allows you to swap out the inside layers. So, if you find that you chose the wrong firmness level or, after years of slumbers, it starts to give, you can swap out a piece of the mattress instead of getting rid of the whole thing. I dont know about you, but that instantly gave me peace of mind when making a decision as personal as a mattress.

What is the Naturepedic Mattress?

This Naturepedic mattress, labeled EOS Classic Organic Mattress (Latex-Free), is certified non-toxic and organic by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), meaning its free of harmful and allergenic substances. This model also comes in a non-latex-free version (Im just allergic to latex, so I went with the other one). You can shop it in sizes twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California kingall with a 12-inch profile.

We Tried It

Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Mattress

Each side of this mattress can have its own firmness level, allowing you to choose between plush, medium, cushion-firm and firm.

Naturepedic Mattress Features

What makes this Naturepedic mattress so special is that youre not married to whatever firmness level you choose, which tends to be a major concern when selecting the best mattress. This non-toxic bed has inserts, meaning it doesnt come all in one piece, including the customizable 3-inch glueless micro-coil layer and the customizable 8-inch glueless encased coil support layer. So while, yes, theres quite a bit of assembly with this model, if youve found youve ordered the wrong firmness level, you can simply swap out the internal components to get the right feel for your sleep. Or, if after many years of snoozing, you find that its more worn in than youd like, you can get a new insert rather than an entirely new bed. Its a convenient feature that makes the buying decision easier.

How We Tested It

My Naturepedic mattress was quick to deliver but took some time to set up. Still, the comfortable sleep was worth it. Heres how I tested this mattress.

Delivery

Naturepedic Eos Mattress delivery boxes

My order was placed on Monday, the mattress shipped that Wednesday, and it arrived on my front porch that Friday. I was delighted, as I was so over my old mattress and practically foaming at the mouth for my Naturepedic to arrive. It showed up in four separate boxes, so I was thankful that the delivery man slid them into my living room.

The main shell and the inserts are wrapped separately, so it does take time to remove them from the box and unwrap them from the plastic. I made the error of doing all of this in my living room. What I shouldve done was unbox the components, bring them upstairs to my bedroom and unwrap them there. Instead, I did all of that downstairs and had to drag each piece up the stairs. It wasnt ideal, but thats on me.

Assembly

Im going to be honest: The idea of putting together a mattress wasnt exactly exciting to me. But now I see that, long story short; Id rather have to assemble it and have the option of switching out its contents rather than have a mattress in a box that turns out to be totally wrong for me and have to deal with shipping the whole thing back.

Before you even get started, I cant stress enough how helpful this video from Naturepedic was. It goes through each step and gives helpful tips so you know exactly what to do.

Naturepedic Eos Mattress

Now, Im not the most patient of people, which means that I couldnt wait for my husband to be available to set up this mattress. Plus, I was so over our old one that I couldnt bear spending one more night with less-than-optimal sleep. So, once our old mattress was out of the way, I first brought the Naturepedic shell casing upstairs and laid it on top of our metal bed frame. Then, it was a matter of placing each layer inside of that casing. My husband and I both chose cushion-firm firmness, so our sides were exactly the same.

Assembling the Naturepedic mattress wasnt difficult, per se. The challenge is that the pieces fit very snugly inside the casingas youd want them to so there arent any gaps (and there arent!)so you have to be strategic with ensuring each layer is in the right place and tightly so. After all the layers were in on each side, it was time to zip up the entire thing. This part did cause me to break a sweat. In hindsight, it definitely wouldve been easier had I waited for my husband because one of us couldve held the top and the side close together while the other one zipped. It took a lot of effort for one person to do this.

But I did it all by myselfnot that Id recommend it, but it can be done.

Sleeping

It had been over 10 years since I had picked out a new mattress, so I wasnt sure what firmness my previous one was and what Id like. Plus, my old mattress was worn in, so it didnt feel the same as it had on day one. Among the four firmness level optionsplush, medium, cushion-firm and firmmy husband and I each opted for cushion-firm. When it arrived, I was nervous because it felt quite firm. At one point, I thought maybe the wrong ones were sent. But everything was correct, and I was ready to put this Naturepedic mattress to the test.

On that first night, I noticed right away how different it felt from my old mattress. This one was firmer, as expected, but I also noticed how it felt getting in and out of bed. The edges were strong and supported my weight as I moved. It didnt have that sunken-in feeling as only a very old model does. I appreciated that from the start. If you had asked me before this if I like a firm mattress, I wouldve said absolutely not. My parents have a firm memory foam mattress, and Ive napped in it before while dog-sitting. Ive never liked it. The difference between theirs and mine is that mine is made of coils, and it isnt firm-firm. So, while its not stiff as a board, its still very supportive.

Naturepedic Eos Mattress with a kettlebell on it.

It only took me a few nights to decide that I love this Naturepedic mattress. It turns out that cushion-firm is the perfect firmness for me. In fact, I regularly get knots in my left shoulder, which results in my left arm going numb and leaving me in a lot of pain. Since sleeping on the Naturepedic mattress, Ive noticed those knots are less regular and less severe. I take it that my body likes it, and its more supported than it was before. And as an every-position sleeper, Im happy whether Im on my side, back or stomach.

My husband also got the cushion firm on his side of the bed, but he hasnt fallen in love with it like I have. He finds it too firm and would prefer something softer. Since its only been a little over a month, I want him to give his body more time to adjust. But if, after that, it still hasnt broken in to his liking, we know we have the option of swapping out the firmness level. Imagine if we had to send back the entire mattress. Not only would I be disappointed because I love my side of the bed, but it would be a bit of a headache.

Pros

  • Customizable firmness on each side

Why You Should Trust Us

Ive been an editor and writer since 2014 and in the editorial commerce world, where I test products, write about products and edit shopping stories, since 2017. Ive covered everything from beauty products to strollers to, yes, bedding, including cooling sheets and a cooling comforter. As the senior shopping editor at Readers Digest, a sister site of Family Handyman under Trusted Media Brands, I understand the important information shoppers want to know, and I strive to provide an in-depth perspective.

Im particularly qualified to review this Naturepedic mattress because its latex-free, and Im allergic to latex. My allergy has only gotten worse as Ive gotten older, so testing a latex-free mattress was super important to me, even though a non-latex-free one would be covered with a mattress topper and sheets anyway. You can never be too careful.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

From over 20 reviews, this Naturepedic mattress has earned an average of 4.7 out of five stars.

I tried several different beds and found them all to be too hot, and even latex being too warm for me. In my search for a new bed, I became aware of the harmful chemicals in most mattresses. So, I decided that I needed a non-latex, organic mattress, writes Grace, a verified buyer. I decided to try the Naturepedic EOS with microcoils. I started out with cushion-firm and found it too soft. Swapping for firmer coils was easy and now I have the perfect bed. It sleeps cool and I can rest easy knowing that I’m not breathing in toxic chemicals.

I’m sensitive to latex, even the clean/pure Dunlop latex seems to bother my breathing. [It] makes my breathing more shallow, which is an immune response. Many organic beds are made with latex. I still wanted an organic bed being a person spends so much of their life in bed, but I needed to find something latex-free. Enter Naturepedic latex-free, writes Steve, a five-star reviewer. I am beyond pleased with the product! It is super high quality. I do woodworking as a hobby and am very detail oriented. Also, my job is very detail oriented at work. Trust me when I say it is high quality!

Product Comparison: Naturepedic vs. Newton Mattresses

Naturepedic started out focusing on organic crib mattressesand has since expanded to beds for kids and adults, too. Newton is another popular mattress brand for babies, kids and even pets. When deciding between Naturepedic vs. Newton mattresses for your little one, there are some differences to consider.

Naturepedic offers three crib mattresses: classic, breathable and ultra-breathable. They start at $269, and all of them are waterproof, lightweight, or feature coils. The differences come in with the type of cover, if any, and the number of coils. Most importantly, all of Naturepedics crib mattresses are 100% certified organic and free from harmful chemicals. Plus, the brand offers free shipping, a 100-night trial, free returns and a limited lifetime warranty.

Newton also has three crib mattresses (not including its mini crib option): original, waterproof and essential. Starting at $199, the three mattresses are Greenguard Gold Certified. The original and waterproof are 5.5 inches thick and designed for ages 0 to 4, while the essential is four inches thick and made for ages 0 to 3. Each one has a zippered, washable cover, but the essential is a single layer; the original is a quilted double layer, and the waterproof liner is a quilted double layer waterproof liner. Just like with Naturepedic, you also get free shipping, a 100-night trial, free returns and a limited lifetime warranty.

When its time to choose one of the brands, keep these core factors in mind. For one, Newtons crib mattresses are all two-stage models to accommodate your child through the toddler years. But with Naturepedic, you have the option of single-stage or two-stage. On the flip side, all of Naturepedics crib mattresses are waterproof, but only one of Newtons models is waterproofan important consideration since babies tend to get messy. It all comes down to what features are most valuable to you.

Final Verdict

Naturepedic Eos Mattress

Naturally, youre going to consider the pros and cons more strongly when making a more expensive purchase.TheNaturepedic mattress takes away some of the common cons associated with shopping for a mattress.Being able to customize each side of the bedand swap out the firmness insert if you realize you made the wrong choiceshould instantly put your mind at ease, as it did mine. When you couple that with its non-toxic, organic stamp of approval from GOTS, its pretty hard not to feel safe with this model.
